New Faces at Lambda
Lambda chapter's new pledges are
ready to start their journey on the road
to activation. During fall rush we were
able to land a number of outstanding
young men, 17 freshmen and 2 sophomores.
Brian Thornburg, from Miami, FL
was one of two legacies to pledge Fiji
this year. Brian who plans to be involved in student government and the
DePauw swim team, is the son of Frederick "Bucky" Thornburg, Lambda '62
and the grandson of James Thornburg,
Lambda '33. Daniel R. Freeman, son
ofJerry A. Freeman, Lambda '53, is our
other legacy. Dan, Littleton, CO, who
is Fiji's newest Student Senator, enjoys
tennis, basketball, and LaCrosse.
Pete Young, Lakewood, OH; Mark
Wilmert, Edina, MN; and Phil Ratzer,
Littleton, CO .are three members of
DePauw's soccer team. Pete is a
Management Fell ow who enjoys music
and weightlifting. Mark hopes to join
the DePauw tennis team and Phil
enjoys basketball and skiing and plans
to major in Economics. Scott Pritchard
from Dayton, OH plans to swim and
play tennis for DePauw.
Many of the pledges will be strong
contributors to Fiji's domination of
Intramural athletics this year. Thai
Pham, from Marion, IN, was an allconference player in soccer, basketball,
and baseball during his high school
career. Dan Demien, South Bend, IN,
played varsity football and baseball in
high school. He was also a founding
member of his school's S.A.D.D.
chapter. Both Thai (who was Saluditorian of his high school) and Dan are
members of the National Honor
Society. Rob Noecker, Granville, OH
and Scott Foster, Brentwood, TN, also
figure to be strong additions to Lambda
Intramurals.
Although each of our pledges is
outstanding in their own right, space
prevents us from describing their many
high school and college activities.
Below is a list of the rest of our fall
pledges and their hometowns.
James Edgar - Annandale, VA
Gavin Heatly - Westport, CT
John Hollensteiner - Barrington, IL
Craig Hudson - Cincinnati, OH
Tom Lewis - Carmel, IN
Victor Lewis - Muncie, IN
Matt Irvine - Northbrook, IL
George Penner - Winnetka, IL

Senior Spotlight
Last semester, one of our brothers,
Thomas G. Lueder had the distinct
pleasure of spending several months
doing an internship for Murray
Savings Association in Dallas, TX. Tom
worked in the commercial real estate
finance division structuring large scale
commercial real estate loans for apartment complexes and shopping malls.
He was particularly responsible for
market studies, financial analysis, and
appraisal work. The internship was
found to be the most educational
experience of his DePauw career. Tom
has intentions of returning to Dallas in
May following graduation, he will be
interviewing there in January during
Winter Term. Along with Tom's experiences in Dallas he has done many
things here at DePauw. Tom has been a
cast member of two DePauw Operas:
"Sweeney Todd" and a starring role in
"Die Fledermaus". He was also a
member of the DePauw Ambassador
Club and Collegians, DePauw's traveling show choir.
Not only has Tom been active on
campus, but he has been an exceptional
leader at Fiji. Tom served as Graduate
Relations Chairman, Social Service
Chairman, and Pledge Trainer for the
Pledge Class of 1984. He found working with the pledges and re-reading the
Purple Pilgrim a rewarding experience
which many active Garns should take
the opportunity to do.
We at Lambda have found Tom to
be a great brother with outstanding
qualities in leadership and fellowship.
We know he is headed for success
and wish him the best of luck!

Fall 1985
Setting Goals (con't. from page 2)
the athletic prospects of the house and
hopes to finish in the top three living
units on campus.
The goal of the house maintenance
committee is to install and maintain
a sense of pride among all members, in
which they realize the benefits of a
clean house and are willing to do what
little work is necessary to keep our
house a comfortable place to live.
The prime concern of the pledge
education committee this fall is grades.
The goal of the committee is to initiate
every pledge and also to have the
highest pledge class GPA on campus.
However, the most important goal of
the pledge committee is to have a
highly constructive semester forming
good brothers rather than good

pledges.
The social service committee's
projects this semester include adding a
third philanthropy project, sponsoring
a Christmas party for community
orphans, as well as continuing the
existing annual events.
Scholarship is the primary reason
why the men at the house have come to
DePauw. Therefore study hours and
quiet hours will be much more strictly
enforced. There have also been several
contests designed to hopefully create
an added incentive to achieve the
highest possible scholarship. To show
our seriousness in this matter we have
raised our initiation standards from a
2.25 to a 2.50. All pledges will achieve
a 2.50 or better before being initiatied
into the house. The ultimate goal of the
scholarship committee is to see that we
finish within the top five living units on
this campus.
Finally, the goal of the graduate
relations committee is to keep all the
graduate brothers well informed about
the happenings here at Lambda. To do
this better we plan on publishing four
Tiger Fiji's this year. Hopefully by doing
this we will be able to give you plenty of
notice about upcoming events so that
you will be able to come back and visit
your chapter. For without you, none
of this would ever be possible.
