Brothers and

Rock Eagle
FALL 1985
Kappa Deuteron
Jumps Out to
Undefeated Start
On October 11 and 12, over 80 brothers and
pledges headed out to Rock Eagle for our an
nual pledge retreat.
After a dinner cookout of hotdogs and ham
burgers, the "serious stuff" began. Brothers
and pledges were divided into six equal groups;
each group was led by a senior group leader.
Each group was given a series of questions to
deiiberate on, with one main question to be
answered in front of the large group. After an
hour, the entire group reassembled in the
meeting room. One by one, the six groups,
represented by a pledge spokesman, answered
their main question. It was evident by the
answers that all of the groups had experienced

Next, three seniors gave brief talks on "What
the Fraternity Meant/had done for them." After
this, recent graduate Rusty Wolf spoke on "Not
for College Days Alone."
After all of the Fraternal discussions, the
group headed to the playing field for our annual
game of "Capture the Flag." After only minor in
juries, the group spent the night and awoke to a
truly delicious breakfast at the Rock Eagle
Cafeteria.
The Volleyball team, led by seniors Tom Blando, David Hannon, and Barry Lennon, is also off
to a 4-0 start, and hopes to capture the title in a

THE
PRESIDENT'S
GAVEL
Cabinet Conies to an
End
Dear Brothers,
With the start of a new year, many new
changes were made. The main concern of the
University and the Greek System was a change
in the drinking age. With the drinking age raised
to 20, alcohol has been taken out of many tradi
tional parties. Fraternities have been having
open parties, however, they have not been pro
viding alcoholic beverages. In addition, socials
have been changed to a "bring your own" event.
Fraternities along with sororities have become
more creative, and I assure you...we are still
having fun!
To review the year, I would say all in all I was
extremely pleased with the Fraternity. As you
can read in the Awards Section of this issue,
there were not many titles we did not win this
year. Socially, I feel like the fraternity is improv
ing even more. With the addition of theme par
ties and various rituals like Purple Up, etc. we
enhanced things greatly. Rush, as you may
know, was an overwhelming success.
The most exciting part about all of this news
is to understand why it happened. The reason
we have achieved our goals is due to the
unbelievable support from all of the brothers.
During my administration, I could not have ask
ed for better assistance than I had from under
graduate brothers, graduates, and officers.
Without this cooperation...nothing is possible. I
would never want anyone to think their work
was not appreciated or went unnoticed. Thank
You.
Last Spring at our Pig Dinner the House Cor
poration President, Tom Watson, announced
plans to move ahead aggressively to find new
housing for our chapter. 1055 Prince Avenue
served as well in the early days, and 3 Clover-
hurst Court has, likewise, been a great home.
But, we have outgrown this facility.
To support the efforts of the House Corpora
tion I agreed to initiate an annual fund drive. We
have never established an annual request for
contributions from graduates, and now is the
time.
To start our campaign seven brothers were
recruited to make the initial contacts. These
brothers. Bill Bass, Terry Sullivan, Sammy
Smith, Randy Blackwood, Bob Cheeley, Keith
Breedlove and Bill McKenzie, have now raised
$4000 with pledges for another $36,000 to be
given over five years. This money has been
deposited in a special future housing account
separate from the Housing Corporation
Operating account. It is not to be spent except
for new housing. Frank Hanna is administering
this account.
Soon after New Years each of you will receive
a request to make a contribution to the housing
fund. We will also ask you to make a five year
commitment to contribute a regular sum. Our
goal is to raise $250,000 in five years.
We can reach our goal and more. We can do
this because our graduates are loyal and able to
find a place in their budget for Kappa Deutron.
Remember that our undergraduate brothers pay
$30 per year for future housing. They do this in
addition to their other fraternity bills, and while
they are basically without a regular income.
Last summer I attended the Fiji Academy and
watched as our undergraduate brothers receive
the Cheney Cup. This is the sixth time we have
brought this cup home. We are a first-class
chapter, and we deserve a first-class home in
Athens. Our graduates can be proud of what

to me. I hope that others may enjoy the friend

they created. The undergraduates are continu
ing our great tradition, and they need to see the
graduates acknowledge their continuing hard
work.
Begin planning your contribution now. In

Kappa Deuteron
Wins Big
Spring and summer marked two very impor
tant dates for Phi Gamma Delta. Last spring,
Phi Gamma Delta was awarded the Fraternity of
the Year Trophy for another year of hard work
and accomplishments on campus. With strong
showings in the activities, community service,
and International Fraternity sections of the
AOPi report, Kappa Deuteron ran away with its
eighth Fraternity of the Year Award in fifteen
years.
During August, Kappa Deuteron sent six
brothers and its Purple Leglonaire to Ohio State
University for the 19th FIJI Academy. Prelimi
nary indications showed the Sigma Tau Chapter
of Seattle, Washington as the favorite for the
Cheney Cup. As Awards Night began, the Kap

college days but It Is basically the same game.
In fact we're usually seen at the local watering

games remaining. Keep your fingers crossed.

Seeing that a rushee only had 10 minutes to
spend at each house. Kappa Deuteron wanted
to make a lasting impression on the rushees.
We wanted our presentation to set us apart
from every other fraternity. After the rushees
were escorted into the house, six brothers told
the rushees about our many accomplishments
~ Cheney Cup winner, AOPi Fraternity of the
Year, Scholastic and Athletic accomplish
ments, etc. After the six had finished talking,
the rest of the chapter came running up from
the basement on cue, encircled the rushees,
and gave the cheer. The remaining time was
spent with each rush team meeting the rushees.

As you can imagine, an impression (hopefully a
good one) was made.
After the structured part was completed,
Kappa Deuteron got back to the basics with par

featuring Telluride, a hypnotist, a magician, and
the ever popular oyster party. Of course, all of
these parties were dry.
