The "New" House:
Chapter renovations complete
This past summer the Upsilon Alpha chapter house
was the subject of $400,000 in renovations. A graduate
rebuilding committee was formed by the graduate chapter
to raise money for remodeling. Through the efforts of
graduates Tom Warne, Cliff Smith, Tom Moore, Tiff
Hoyden, and others the chapter house is looking great.
Over half of the money was spent updating safety items
such as electrical, plumbing, fire, roof, and kitchen
equipment. Other renovations include the opening of the
entry way into a reception area; the living room was
completely redone to add a more formal look; and the
dining room and bathrooms were updated so that they are
much more pleasant to be in.
$150,000 was raised by the graduates in their fund
raiser efforts and $50,000 is being paid by the
undergraduates. We are now working diligently to finish
our fund raising efforts.

Academics emphasized in Pledge program
Upsilon Alpha has a long tradition of outstanding
scholarship. Because this is our #1 priority, we stress its
importance to our new members. The program we have
developed is a successful one, evidenced by our being
honored as having the "Outstanding Fraternity
Scholarship Program" each year since its inception 3
their pledge semester in order to become an active
member of the fraternity. Because of this new rule, our
scholarship
program
has
undergone a
number of
revisions.
One of these is a mid-semester evaluation sheet that
available to answer any questions. The new members are
each pledge is required to have filled out by their
instructor. Our objective is two-fold: to isolate problem
areas of each individual so that special attention may be
given to them, and to increase the student's awareness of
his current performance and the expectations placed upon
him. These reports enable the scholarship committee to
determine each pledge's current CPA and give assistance
also required to study each night(Sunday-Thursday)from
to those who need it.
7:00 to 10:00 p.m. The study group leader periodically
reviews their progress and any problems are directed to a
brother who has already taken the class and fared well.
The two then set up a time they can meet for a tutorial
We have found that placing such a strong emphasis on
scholarship to the new members creates a positive attitude
towards school that each may carry with him for the
remainder of his college years. We are proud of our
scholastic performance at Upsilon Alpha, and will
continue to strive to stay on top.
Shawn Giffin. Scholarship Chairman
years ago.
The program is geared towards our new members and
begins with an evaluation of their schedule and past
performance in school. From here each pledge is assigned
to a group leader who monitors their progress and is
session.
Our neophyte program has been completely
eliminated. Pledges must now attain a 2.25 CPA during
Fiji dominates Fall Rush
As we all know. Rush is the key ingredient to a
fraternity's success, among a competitive greek system at
any university. Things are no different at Arizona, where
top national fraternitites exist and strive to uphold their
image as a "strong" house on campus. Realizing this,
much attention, effort, and devotion was focused last fall
toward our rush campaign in August.
We are now very pleased to say we "rose to the
occasion" and recruited an excellent group of fine quality
young men into our fraternity. Ourgoalwastobe selective,
but with the high number of exceptional rushees going
through this year, we had the opportunity to place a pledge
pin on 56 of the 65 men who received bids from Fiji. Yes
indeed, the time and hard work did pay off!
There were several reasons for our rush success in
1985. Here are some, just to name a few.
1. NO ALCOHOL DURING RUSH! 1985 marked the 1st
dry rush in Arizona history. This worked to our
advantage, with the high majority of easy going,
outstanding rushers in our house, we were able to
benefit with our sincere, one-on-one salesmanship.
2. LEGACIES. IFC reported that Phi Gamma Delta had
more legacies coming through rush than any other
fraternity on campus. This resulted in over 20% of our
new pledges having fiji backgrounds.
5. DAYTIME ACTIVITIES. During the day,fun filled events
such as swimming, volleyball, Softball, etc., mixed well
with brother-rushee participation. Also, Wednesday
afternoon at the Dog Tracks added another dimension
to the excitement.
6. PROMOTION. Fiji paraphernalia such as t-shirts,
posters, banners, and drinking cups advertised our
house well. Our rush pamphlet also illustrated our
excellence in past achievements.
The list could go on and on. It was truly an effort from
every memberofourfraternity which madethis past rush a
standout. Every one of us can proudly say "I'm mighty
proud to be a FIJI!"
Brian K. Foster. Rush Chairman
Pat Anderson resigns as Purple Legionaire
It was announced at last year's Norris Pig Dinner that
Pat Anderson (AZ 1970) was going to resign from his post
as Purple Legionaire after five years of service. Pat
explained he would like to devote more time to his family
and dental practice.
The step down came at a goodtimeforthe house, since
now it seems we are pretty well back on our feet again, and
these transitional problems should not affect the house.
Jeff Derickson was selected as the new Purple
Legionaire. Jeff also is a local dentist.
3. HOUSE RENOVATION. Our $350,000 house
refurbishment over the summer didn't hurt, especially
since SAE & Sigma Chi moved into newly built
establishments within the last 2 years.
4. BROTHER PARTICIPATION. With positive optimistic
attitudes toward our house, the brothers were out in
full force making sure to call back and contact rushees
we were especially interested in.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
This year's Baker Cup is off to a terrific start. With only
about a month and a half into school the brothers here at
Dear Brothers:
This past summer was the subject of a great deaf of
effort on the part of many graduates and undergraduates
to renovate the chapter house.
Costing $400,000, the idea to give Upsilon Alpha a face
lift was conceived fast November by the local Tucson
graduate chapter and a committee of undergraduates.
As you probably know by now,$350,000is being raised
through graduates and $50,000 is being paid off by the
undergraduates. So far we have raised approximately
$160,000 from 110 out of 1200 graduates.
/ encourage all graduates to attend the homecoming
party November 9th. There will be a pre-game dinner party
starting at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Wildcats' defeating
the UCLA Bruins on their way to the Rose Bowl!
A fterward there will be an open house for viewing the
reconstruction at the chapter house. Included in the
activities will be a hospitality room at the Holiday Inn
downtown on Broadway. (The Holiday Inn is this year's
location for the University of Arizona Homecoming Party.)
Look for the forum, right in the front on the first floor: that is
where the Phi Gam party will be.
Upsilon
Alpha
have
already
participated
in
five
philanthropies.
These philanthropies range from working with the
children at Casa de los Nines to doing yard work for the
Ronald McDonald House. We also participated in the citywide Softball tournament over labor day weekend, where
the proceeds went to Arizona's "Send a Kid to Camp
Fund."
This fall is filled with many worthwhile activities. Some
of the coming events include valet services for the Tucson
Open with tips going to Ronald McDonald House, working
for Larry Smith Cancer Run, Special Olympics county and
state bowling tournaments, taking the children of Casa de
los Ninos to the zoo, and a Dance-a-thon with Gamma Phi
Beta sorority.
We at Phi Gamma Delta feel that these goals are very
realistic, and plan to have over ten philanthropies a
semester. With these goals in mind Upsilon Alpha hopes to
keep up the proud tradition of excellent community
service.
