FALL 1985
PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
With the 1985-86
school year well underway., things are really looking up at Rho
Alpha. We came back this quarter with 13
brothers on campus and 2 co-oping, ten
more brothers than last fall. With this
much improved membership situation, we are
beginning to function as a real f raternitv
should once again. For those graduates
who don't know, the Archon's nave
continued our administrative probation one
more year, with two minimum goals to be
met by May 1386: CD 35 members and
pi 'ges and a functioning Board of
Cl
>ter Advisors.
As always, the Chapter's main concern
continues to be Rush. Due to poor summer
orcianization, a last-minute change in Rush
Chairman* and a low sophomore turnout
during fall rush, we didn't net any pledges
for the quarter. However, now that outsocial committee has a real budget, we
have consistently good parties. This has
resulted in interested freshman who come
back every week,, and more importantly,
freshman who want to pledge Winter
Quarter. At this date, at least five men
are "in the bag" for winter's pledge -clajss,
In other areas, we are doing very
well. The Chapter House has seen about
*4OQ worth of new paint and renovations.
Most importantly, the bar --'party area has
been redone, with new lighting, a working .
sink, and a cooler that Keeps kegs at the
proper temperature Cfor a changeX Our
social activities include weekly Fridav
nappy hours, UCR movie nights, river
outings, and an incredible beach party
Cwortnv of Ed Hardell> thrown recently by
our eleven little sisters. Plans are being
made for Thanksgiving Dinner, the infamous
Christmas Party, and a full winter quartersocial calendar.
For those graduates who haven't
h
.
,
the trophv until this November, but it
finally graces our mantle., in the
intraniurals department, we absolutely,
positively, stank in rec volleyball this fall,
but we are already looking forward to bas
and other sports in winter, and
then softball in spring. And there's always
the Special Olympics!
We have .iust held elections of the
officers for 1385-86. The new officers
are: Dana W. Hesse '86, President; Stephen
M. Snyder '87, Treasurer; Scott A. Stanko
'88, Rec. Sec.; Roe! T. Cue.iilo '88, Cor. Sec.;
and Linwood M. Leftwich Jr. '87, Historian.
The entire cabinet has already proved to
be inspired and effective at getting the
Chapter to set and meet its many goals.
We as undergraduates realize that
the success or failure of the Chapter is
up to us and our efforts. Still, the more
graduate support that the undergrads
(.including rushees> see, the more we
realize .just how special Phi Gamma Delta
can be. And while -Financial support is much
appreciated, equally important to us is
seeing our grads come back to Blacksburg
for Homecoming, Pig Dinner, and especially
rush. I have heara countless comments
from rushees about how impressive it is to
see Rho Alpha graduates travelling
hundreds or thousands of miles to come
back to the Chapter, year after year.
Having a bunch of graduates at a rush
function can turn a mediocre party intc a
great, one. I'd like to thank those grads
who were here for Fall Rush, and invite
everyone back to our Winter Rushes on
.January 14, 18, and 2.1. And mark your
calendars for Morris Pig Dinner on May Ore4
at the Sheraton!.
In closing, let me sav that uhapter
tone is the highest it has been in a Ion*
time. After near collapse last year, we
have come back and recommitted
ourselves. It won't be easy getting to
where we want to be, but we going to get
there, and we are going to have so much
fun in' the process that it will probably be
illegal Cor at least immoral) !
I'm prouder than ever to be a
