Pig Dinner Peaks Graduate Relations
By Brother Brad Rickel (’87)
The Graduate Relations Committee is
off to another busy year of planning
graduate events and updating files on
graduate brothers in order to increase
communication between graduate
brothers and the undergraduate chapter.
Our most important graduate brother
event, the Norris Pig Dinner, was held at
the chapter house Saturday, September
14. Over 30 graduate brothers made

their journey back to Psi. After watching
Wabash defeat Hope College in the Lit-
tle Giants first home game of the year,
the house filled with graduate brothers
who enjoyed a relaxing hour of cocktails
and casual conversation in the back liv-
ing room.
The program began under the gui-
dance of Symposiarch Kyle A. Carr (’85).
After Carr's address, brothers joined in

the singing of “Bringing in the Pig” and,
as is custom, the freshman kissed the ass
of the pig. Later, during a special mo-
ment that evening, our oldest and most
beloved graduate brother, John P. Col-
lett ('24) kissed the pig’s snout.
The invocation was then given by
Timothy Oakes (86) and the “Exile’s
Toast” was excellently executed by Kurt
Spoerle ('88). After dinner was com-

Hearson Named
Purple Legionnaire
By Brother Jeff Short ('88)
Psi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta is
proud to recognize the election of Dr.
Lester Hearson as the fraternity’s cur-
rent Purple Legionnaire. Dr. Hearson
was initiated last May after the retire-
ment of Brother Philip Mikesell ('63)
from the position.
Hearson currently serves as the ninth
registrar of Wabash College and is a
member of the biology department. His
responsibilities as Purple Legionnaire
entail the supervision of the chapter in
its daily activities and involve acting as a
liason between the chapter and the inter-
national fraternity.
After receiving his BA and MS from
Kansas State University, Hearson
taught at Park College in Kansas City,
Missouri. He received his Ph.d in 1966
from Michigan State University and was
awarded the National Institute of Health
Post-Doctoral Fellowship. The fellowship
enabled Hearson to study at the
Hebrecht Laboratory in the
Netherlands.
He came to Wabash in 1967 after com-
pleting his studies in the Netherlands.
His affiliation with Phi Gamma Delta
began on November 11, 1981 when he
was initiated as an honorary member.
As a very active member of the
Crawfordsville community, Hearson
serves as Lay Leader and a member of
the board of trustees for the First United
Methodist Church. He is active in the
Kiwanis and the Lion’s Club. Working
with the youth of the city, Hearson
serves as the Chairman of the local
scouting committee and as a biology in-
structor for the grade school’s annual
outdoor education program.
In his spare time, Dr. Hearson enjoys
working with landscape archituecture,
and many of his designs can be seen
throughout the Crawfordsville communi-
ty.
The men of Psi Chapter would like. to
thank Dr. Hearson for his interest ia the
fraternity and to welcome him in pls new
responsibilities.
Dr. Lester Hearson smiles from his of-
fice as Registrar of Wabash as the new
Purple Legionnaire of Psi Chapter.

It is hard to believe fall has hit the
campus of Wabash College already. With
fall, traditionally comes many sporting,
campus and fraternity activities. Here is
just a brief look at what we have accom-
plished since last spring:
Psi sent eight representatives to the
19th Fiji Academy at Ohio State this past
summer. The program was valuable and
a great chance to meet our Fiji brothers
from across the nation and Canada. At
the Academy, Psi received honorable
mention in the Owen Cup which is award-
ed to the chapter with the most improy-
ed scholarship. We also received recogni-
tion for our many consecutive years”
above the All Men’s Average.
After a strong semester last spring
with firsts in intramurals and scholar-
ship, rush went incredibly well for Psi
this fall. I would like to take this oppor-
tunity to thank the many graduate
brothers who took time out to recom-
mend prospective pledges to us. They
It could be said that in this current
academic year, Phi Gamma Delta became
modernized. In the area of house im-
provements, the fraternity has either
purchased or acquired several large
items that have served to increase effi-
ciency and comfort.
Many additions have been made to our
already impressive house library. At the
end of last year, the house bought a
Zenith computer system with double
disk drive and a Brother letter-quality
printer. The computer has word process-
ing (word perfect), databasing (dbase),
and the usual basic and Pascal program-
ming software. Also in the library is a
new trophy case and glass enclosures for
the existing ones. These were made
possible by Brother Jim Ayers.
In the kitchen, Jo Ann is most happy
with her new stove. A used stove was
purchased by the housing corporation
after the old one became unreliable. It
has a larger amount of grill space and the
oven can be set with a timer. With money
that was given to the chapter by the Fiji
moms’ association, the house purchased a
small microwave that is in constant use
between meals. Also purchased last year
was a new icemaker and a new milk
refrigerator is now being used.
In the dining room, Thomas Riley Mar-
shall (at least his portrait) is once again
occupying its space on the end wall. The
picture now has a lighted case, courtesy
of Brother Jim Ayers.
With the remainder of the money
made available by the Fiji mom’s associa-
tion, the house bought a video cassette
recorder which is in the basement and
connected to a new television set.
The basement is also home to the most
needed addition also made possible by
the Fiji moms — a new, large capacity
clothes dryer which does not require coin
operation. This is in addition to the coin-
operated washer and dryer that already
exists.
House Manager, Kurt Spoerle, and the
current pledges are, of course, keeping
the house and all of these new additions
just like new so that they can be used by
the many more brothers to pass through
the fraternity.

... A Word From
The President
are always appreciated and considered.
Psi expects a lot from the twenty-six
members of the class of 89. Currently we
have activities ranging from the top run-
ners on the Little Giant cross country
team to four pledges on the Glee Club. I
think you will be hearing and seeing
their names a lot in the future.
Many improvements have been made
to the house this fall. The Fiji Moms
donated money last spring which we
used to purchase a new dryer,
microwave and VCR. The housing cor-
poration purchased a new computer,
computer table, trophy case, a lighted
case for the Thomas Riley Marshall pain-
ting, and a new stove. At the annual
Frank Norris Dinner a fund was started
by Brother Peteris Silins '69 to buy new
carpeting for the first floor. If things pro-
gress at, their current rate we should
have thlkearpeting laid over Christmas
break.
I would like to apologize for the confu-
sion raised over our last Little Giant Fiji.
It was compiled and mailed much later
than I had hoped and realized. This year
we will stay on top of business to keep
you better informed with both the
undergraduate and graduate events. To
do this, though, we need your coopera-
tion. It seems that the labels from Inter-
national Headquarters are outdated
more than the labels we can get from the
college, so we are using college supplied
labels for this issue. If there are errors
with this mailing please notify the LGF
editor Tom Plake, myself or the alumni
office of the college.
With a full house and a strong new
tone we are looking forward to another
strong semester for Psi at Wabash Col-
lege.
Fraternally,
Scott Cougill
perge!

IM Race Off
And Running
For 1985-86
By Brother Ed Ciolkowski (’88)
At the beginning of the 1984-85 school
year, the thoughts of winning in-
tramurals were only dreams. After the
usual slow start in the fall sports, it look-
ed like the Phi Gams would finish in the
middle of the pack. But then, as winter
came, the Fiji's found themselves with a
firm foothold on third place and a long
shot at winning. The dreams and
thoughts of winning became everyday
talk with only three events left. The last
event arrived and Psi Chapter found
itself still in third place. But with an ef-
fort from everyone, the Fijis were able to
finish well enough in the Outdoor Track
Meet to walk away with the IM Cham-
pionship.
So now the quest begins over again.
The trouble that always seems to plague
us during the large fall sports is with us
again. But the smaller sports are keeping
us in the running. Sophomore cyclist
Kurt Spoerle finished 3rd in the IM Bicy-
cle Race, and the Fiji golf team, led by
freshman Greg Harkenrider also finished
third. We can only be optimistic as we
head towards the winter sports. But the
determination is present, as Psi Chapter
of Phi Gamma Delta attempts to become
the first fraternity in recent history to
win IM’s for two consecutive years.

pleted, President Scott Cougill ('87) gave
the president’s report. The next part of
the program consisted of an award’s
presentation by Bradley Rickel ('87),
honoring Dr. Phillip Mikesell who served
as Purple Legionaire at Psi from
1976-1985.
As brother's continued to enjoy their
wine, William D. McCarty ('65), attorney
and Indiana State Senator from Ander-
son, presented a very entertaining
keynote address, which was well receiv-
ed by both graduate and undergraduate
brothers.
A few of the graduate brothers in at-

travelled all the way from McCon-
nelsville, Ohio, three members of the in-
‘famous class of ‘59: Ray Riddle,
Oklahoma; Don Smith, Carmel, IN; and

Social Service
Committee
Keeps Active
By Brother Jeff Short (’88)
The Social Service Committee has
planned many exciting and promising
projects for this fall semester. These pro-
jects include: a Halloween Party for pre-
schoolers, Monon Bell football run for the
Leukemia Society, Thanksgiving Dinner
with senior citizens, and Christmas with
underprivileged children.
The Halloween party was on October
31 and a huge succcess. Many pre-school
children attended. The children trick or
treated throughout the house going from
room to room. After completing their
rounds throughout the house they
returned to the dining room to enjoy cup-
cakes and punch. The Brothers as well as
the children had an enjoyable and fun-
filled evening.
The Monon Bell football carry took
place the morning before the Monon Bell
game, with the DePauw Fiji's meeting us
half-way between Greencastle and Craw-
fordsville.
With what we have planned for this
semester and what we are looking
towards for next, we are sure that Phi
Gamma Delta is doing its share to help
the community of Crawfordsville.
support we receive from our graduate
brothers at Pig Dinner. We are,
however, disappointed that this is the on-
ly time of the year that we have contact
with many of our graduate brothers. The
graduate relations committee is current-
ly working on solving this problem. If
you have any suggestions regarding this,
or have any other matters of concern
regarding graduate relations please feel
free to contact either Brad Rickel or Tom
Plate in care of the fraternity. We count
on your help and support when making
plans for future events here at Psi.
