GAVEL'S REPORT
Brothers,
This fall Phi Gamma Delta has, as usual, many reasons to be proud. At Ekklesia,
which was held in Denver this August, Kappa Deuteron won the Zerman Trophy for extra
curricular activities and we receive one of the three honorable mentions awarded for the
Cheney Cup. Also, we should aU be proud that brother Bill"Spot" Bracewell was elected as
an Archon.
On the local level, things are looking up as well. Our chapter G.P.A. rose markedly,
bringing us from 3rd to 2nd place in scholarship among fraternities. Our accounts receiva
ble, which was a problem as of Pig Dinner last spring, was well under $2,000 by the end of
fall msh. Speaking of fall msh, we pledged 21 fine men and have enthusiastically begun to
educate them.
We appreciate the work that several graduate brothers have contributed toward our
goal of a new house at 3 Cloverhurst Court. Brothers Strickland, Lowring, Rogers, Cheeley and BraceweU have been working on plans, parking and zoning variance changes that
vvovild b-e necessaiy for any building. Also, Dave Watson is heading up a fundraising drive,
obviously quite necessary before our plans can become serious. Another thanks for gradu
ate involvement goes to Jimmy Adams for his usual assistance with Formal Pledging. This
quarter we have had visits from Jack Heilgiest, Tim Jett, and several other graduates have
volunteered their time to help with our chaplaincy program. Joe Fennell, who is back at
the University in law school, spent an evening at die house and treated the undergraduates
to some beer. This type of visit is appreciated and gready encouraged!
We have a new graduate brother, initiated early in October. He is Jere Morehead, a
professor in the legal studies department here, and we are confident he will be a great
brother and asset to Kappa Deuteron.
As always, please stop by anytime you can and offer your advice or company, because
"Phi Gamma Delta is not for college days alone."
Perge!
\r\n• GRADUATE RELATIONS •
This year was an extraordinary year for Kappa Deuteron, as our chapter celebrated
her twentieth anniversary. The 1988 Norris Pig Dinner was no exception. The entire
weekend of April 8th and 9th was fihed with event and activities. To kickoff the week
end, the undergraduates held a special formal chapter on Friday night which was at
tended by over 15 graduates. Saturday morning's activities began at 8:00 for the annual
Pig Dinner Golf Toumament. Over 30 undergraduates and graduates participated in
the 18 hole Lauderdale toumament. Following the morning of golf, the aftemoon's ac
tivities included roasting a pig at the house for a bar-b-que. Finally the weekend culmi
nated with the Norris Pig Dinner. The speaker at the Dinner was none other than Di
rector Emeritus William S. Zerman. Over 180 undergraduates and graduates attended.
Held at the Athens Country Club, this black tie dinner was one of the most successful
alumni weekends in Kappa Deuteroris twenty years, helping to make 1988 a year to remember.
• COMMUNITY RELATIONS •
We are proud to stand out from the other fraternities on campus. In addition to oth
er aspects, our pride stems from our work in the community.
In Spring quarter we accumulated the highest number of volunteer service hours in
the community, relative to the other fraternities on campus. Phi Gamma Delta has be
come synonymous with help in the community by assisting in areas such as the Discover
Athens Fair, Sandy Creek Park and the Bridge Way Boy's Home.
In addition to other projects, Steve Dunn and Brian Scott donated their individual
time to service in the community.
We have several activities already planned this year. We intend to be first on cam
pus this year again.
•PUBLICATIONS •
As the Publications Chairman,I would like to take this opportunity to ask you, the
graduates, for your help. This is not the easiest job in our chapter, but without your in
put it is nearly impossible. My goal for this committee is to put out an in-depth FUJIUGA once per quarter with the PHI GAM-O-GRAM such as this to be used in an as need
ed capacity for timely announcements and information concerning our chapter. The
formula that I would like to see in the FUJIUGA would be 70% graduate news,25% un
dergraduate news, and 5% Athens area and University news. This sounds great and
looks good on paper but the 70% graduate news must come from you. I can not make it
up. If you, or someone you know, has accomplished something, send it in. Are you
starting a new business? Is your company looking for a few good men? Got a promo
tion? Got a raise? Gotten married? Please, send it in. We can help you keep up with
our brothers if you keep up with us. Send the information to Steve Fowler, Publica
tions Chairman,3 Cloverhurst Court, Athens GA 30605, or call 404-353-0503.

\r\nPledge Education
1988-89 Fan Pledge Class
Once again rush was very successful for the
Kappa Deuteron Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta.
Although rush was only seven days this year,
with three formal days and four days of open
rush, we were able to extend bids to twenty-one
of the finest men at the University of Georgia.
Among the young men that were pledged there
were many fine athletes and they were aU capa
ble of academic excellence, and campus leader
ship. It is easy to see the potential of these
young men b^ause in the first few weeks, two
were elected to Freshmen Council and one to
the Student Association.
We are confident that through the traditionally
strong pledge education program, these young
men wUl be molded into fine brothers with ad
mirable character. The Pledge Educators for
the Delta Triton pledge class are Chris Herman
*89 and David Joyner'89.
We would like to express our gratitude for the
graduate brothers' participation and interest in
rush and also for the letters of recommenda
tion. Graduate participation helps us to recruit
the caliber of men that is necessary to carry on
the great tradition that the brothers of Phi
Gamma Delta have established ovct the past

brothers. Below, there is a graduate update form. Please fill this out and send it back to the
chapter house. This will help us relay information to you. Thank you for your cooperation.
