Dear Fiji Graduate Brothers,
This letter may come as a surprise since you haven't received
one in some time, but "Better late than never", right. I would
like to apoligize for the chapter for not putting out a news letter
in some time but we all hope you understand that we just haven't
had the manpower' or budget we wish we had so most of the funds have been
reallocated to rush and house improvements. V/e decided; however
that you are too important to the future of the chapter to miss
out on the present.
The past two rush semesters have resulted in quality and
quantity improvements.
V/e also have seen many house improvements
with the help of the housing corporation^ in the last year and a
half.
And v/e have made major strides in grades, Im's, and financial
security.
o t Dates
A couple of important dates coming up that you should be aivare
of are Homecoming and the accompanying trike race. The race brings
the week of Sycamore Sillies to an end at 3:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21.
The Homecoming parade will take place on Saturday, October 22nd
with a "Bloody Mary Brunch" sponsored by the chapter afterwards.
Other events planned for this semester include the most
talked about party on campus- Fiji Island, last years party showed
a great turnout and this year's will be even better. The party
will take place in back of the house and everyone is invited. Hope
to see you there!
elections.

Tandem Games:
Last year's tandem results brought celebration and a few
disappointments.
Injuries during the race hampered our chances of
placing high at the end, but the team^which ran second most of the
race, still finished
however put six new
in the top three in
banner competition,
with a few riders short. The week before ,
plaques and trophies in our case. We placed
the tandem games, twister, yell-like-hell,
and received the award for cooperation.with
our pairing (Sigma Nu and Alpha Chi Omega).
Pledge and Initiation Report:
V/e have had quite a turnaround in the past semester in the
quantity of men initiated.
The past three semesters have resulted
in a total of 10 men initiated ( 3 of which have left school).
This semester we initiated seven men from a pledge class of nine.
One of the two not initiated received a job offer from his
grandfather and the other may return in the spring to finish his
schooling.
As you can see we have concentrated our efforts towards
a higher retention fate and it has payed off.
The Fall *88 pledge class now has ten fine young men and we
are looking at a goal of at least'ten more in the spring. After
working with the past pledge class and Field Secretary Matt
Amend; Pledge Educator, Mark Grimmer has developed a few new policies
to strengthen the probationary period.
The new members will have
study tables once a week and will try to equal or better the last
class'
grade ranking of 2 among fraternity pledges.
They will
also follow a pledge manual and strict organization devised by
Mark.
The chapter has also agreed that a minimum 2.5 GPA be
required for initiation.
\r\nRecording and Coresponding Secretaries:
Chad Leistner and Don Sippcl
Having been in office for nearly a year we have seen many changes.
Perhaps some
of our biggest improvements have come by way of increased cliapter support, attendance
at meetings, and grade improvements.
The overall chapter tone was rather poor at the end of the 1988 Spring semester,
Tliere was a problem with bill collection which resulted in less activities, which in
turn brought about less participation and meeting attendance. A lot of gratitude goes
to Tom Barlow who stepped in as Treasurer over the summer. He collected on nearly all
of the overdue bills and payed off nearly $5,000 in chapter debts to Internationals and
Terre Haute Businesses. Fall of '88 has brought about a renewed atmosphere. Bills are
being payed on time. Participation at chapter events has increased and meeting attendance
lias risen from 53Z to 90%.
At the beginning of the Fall 1987 semester the chapter was ranked l^th out of lA
fraternities in grades. Something no one could be proud of. At the end of the semester
we moved up to seventh and now we stand at fifth. Well above the men's campus average.
Our pledge class of Spring '88 was ranked second. We have instituted some incentives
directed towards improving our grades even more. One such event that has caught on is a
semiannual "Steak and Bean Dinner", At the end of every semester a scholarship dinner
is given in which anyone over a 2,5 for the semester eats steak and anyone under eats beans.
These are the improvements to date. We hope to improve graduate communications in the
future as well as continue with the progress we have made, Hopefuly the next newsletter
will bring even more reports of success.
As Always,
Proud to be FIJI'S

Treasurer Report:
Tom Barlow
Due to a tragic and shocking accident ' Tom Barlow is currently being hospitalized
for damage done to his right leg, Tom will require surgery and a two week hospitalization
stay as well as a long recovery period at home. Anyone who has gotten to know Tom in
the past years can understand how much he is missed by those of us at the house. By this
time you should be able to reach him at the house if you wish to send a card.
Although I do not have exact numbers I can tell you how well Tom has done in his
second term as a Treasurer,
"Torn took over in Mid-summer after the chapter had built up
nearly five thousand dollars in debts.
In a matter of months Tom has managed to collect
on most of the outstanding bills and pay off all of our debts to headquarters and area
businesses.
To ensure the collection of future bills Tom and the Cabinet have instituted
policies such as using promissory notes and the threat of court action as well as banning
individuals from social events. The officers are very firm with these policies and the co
operation of the chapter is causing things to run rather smoothly,
Tom has asked me to express his concern with graduate support however.
Over the summer
Tom sent out letters to Graduate Brothers asking for donations to get the chapter back
on its feet. After paying for the postage Tom had only one hundred dollars left. The
support of graduates is very important to a young chapter such as ours and Tom wants all
of you to remember what this chapter meant to you when you were here and take a minute
to think about how much it's existance means to us and future Fiji's.
President's Report:
Pete Silins
Greetings from Iota Sigma.
We hope everyone has had a prosperous year.
With the fall semester here, the chapter is moving onward and upward. The fall
pledge class has ten quality men. Homecoming is rapidly approaching and we are awaiting
many graduates.
The semester is turning out to be a fine one, with a recent visit from Matt Amend.
Brother Amend, former Field Secretary, has been assigned as the Director of Redevelopment
and our chapter has been designated as one of his chapters. Matt left with some very
tangible goals and new ideas.
We hope to achieve these goals soon,
soo"!
Hope to see you all
Fraternally,
Pete Silins '89

FALL NEWSLETTER 1988
IOTA SIGMA
It feels good to be back with the brothers.
than in the past.
The diamond is looking more full this year
This semester has and will be a year for change for the chapter historian
and the rest of the chapter.
Many new improvements will be implemented this semester.
Myself, along with the help and guidance of Matt Amend, Field Secretary, are revising
Post Initiation Training.
This will help the brothers as a whole, and give some structure
to future historians so that a tradition of excellence can be carried on.
Some of the
changes include the holding of all the badges and certificates until ALL new initiates have
completed PIE (Post Initiation Training), an easier and more structured program consisting
of four one hour sesssions instead of "when I can get to it", and clear goals for each of
our new initiates.
These changes, along with others will make our "new blood" believe in Phi Gamma Delta
all the days of their lives. Remember, Phi Gamma Delta is not just for college days alone,
and neither is Iota Sigma.
Remember that funny saying that all you said at one time--
"Peace To Your Toes". We remember, and we hope that the tradition of Iota Sigma is still
dear to your heart. I'm sure you'll always be able to say with meaning "PROUD TO BE A FIJI"!

\r\nA Round of Clicks:
We would like to congratulate a few brothers on their recent accomplishments and wish
them all the luck in their future.
The first round of clicks goes to Brother Bill Niederer for completing the needed
work for his masters.
We also owe our Field Secretary, Matt Amend, a big thanks for spending a few days with
us in October to help make the chapter a little stronger and improve our existing committee
structure.
A
big round of clicks and a pink belly goes to brother Jeff Frye for his marriage over
the sximmer.
He and his wife Ginger are currently living in a set of new apartments on
Poplar Street and awaiting the birth of a possible legacy. Jeff's devotion to the chapter
has not lacked however, as he still chairs several committees and devotes all of
his spare
time to the chapter.

House Improvements:
Improvements have been running rampant at the Fiji house. The lighted Greek letter sign
has been reinstalled on the roof top to call attention to the house and create a little campus
awareness. New carpet in the formal was layed down last year and was just recently shampooed.
The bricks on the porch which were lose have been torn down and cleaned and a brick layer
is expected anytime. The penthouse shower is being taken out and replaced by a standup
shower as soon as all the parts arrive. And furniture and ceiling fans have been donated
by various brothers and their parents. We also painted the front porch, installed tile in
the kitchen and first floor bathroom, and set up colored flood lights in the front lawn in
a work session over the weekend of Oct. 8th.
Right now the Housing Corporation has put forth the money for the recent house
improvements but their budget is also limited. For us to make the house the best on campus
we need your support. I'm sure you all understand how badly we need your support not only
financially but also your advise and experience is needed by the chapter.
Any visits you
can make to the house and put a few cents in will help us make the decisions we need to make.
Please feel free to drop in and even spend a night when your are in the Terre Haute area.
