In the short time that most of these men have been
associated with us they have accomplished two things that
I definitely think are notable. First, they successfully
transformed the "illegal" Pledge Bar into a 10:30 brunch
and football pool forborne football games. I'm sure this new
tradition will be carried on in the future with great pride here
at Gamma Tau. Secondly, they pulled off the earliest suc
cessful pledge raid that can be remembered. We are all look
ing forward to welcoming these young men into our ranks
sometime Winter Quarter.

Social Service in the Gamma Tau chapter is coming off a
record year. Last year the brothers accumulated o\ cr 1800

the fraternities of Georgia Tech.
The Social Service Committee this year has set a goal of
achieving 2500 manhours and a first place finish for the
1988-89 year. We have already participated in many fine pro

Treasurer's Report
As the new school year begins, our chapter is looking for
ward to another fun filled and expensive quarter. Major finan
cial expenditures include Homecoming,the''Gamma Taukl'
Homeeoming Brunch, and a full social calendar.
Recent studies have been done by House and Grounds and
by our House Corporation on the increasing costs of utilities
and general house upkeep. To cover these increased costs,
brothers'rent for living at Greighton-Vail has increased 28%
over the past two quarters.
Recently, the chapter has hired an accountant to keep our
books in check and to fill out complicated tax and legal forms.
Unfortunately, our accountant is not a Phi Gam. which we
would definitely prefer. Also, although he does excellent work,
he is located in Athens which incurs additional expenses. We
are continuing to look for alternatives so if any of you have
any suggestions, please let us know.
Please stop by and see us if you are in the Atlanta area.
Fraternally.

\r\nRoom Renovations
at Gamma Tau
College students have always worked to fix up their dor
mitory or fraternity house rooms. They have painted, hung
posters, and put in carpet; the ambitious even huilt new desks
and hung the beds from the ceiling. Recently, though, we Phi
Gams at Georgia Tech have made room renovation a serious
undertaking. Simple remodeling has given way to complex
construction.
The small(16'by 16'for a four-man)rooms at Creighton\ail Hall make some sort of renovation a must. F"or a room
to be comfortable, ever>' cubic foot must he utilized.
Renovation begins with a complete gutting of a room. Old
desks, closets, bed enclo.sures, and even the old ceiling is torn
out. This lea\ es the room totally empty, all the way up to the
"Cloud 9" under construccion
rafters. Next comes building the deck. The rafters are 11 ft.
up. and the most popular design in recent years is to build
adeek over the entire room at4.5 feet high. The lower"floor"
only two-man room in the house to remove the interior closet
is divided so that each resident has his own bedroom with
room for his bed.a set ofdrawers, and e.xtra space for whatever
he wants. The upper "floor" still leaves 6.5 feet of headroom
which accommodates even the tallest Gamma Taus.
"Upstairs" you will find desks, couches, stereos, refrigerators,
and usually the closets. This method of construction, in
essence, doubles your li\'ing area, making a room two stories
high! While building the deck one can't forget to add the
special features that make a room nicer: more electric outlets,
phone jacks in each bedroom, heat ducts down into each
bedroom,.sound insulation, and two-way light.switches. Also,
don't forget to include a time capsule somewhere inside the
frame! Once the structure is done, you put up dry wall, plaster,
build de.sks, paint, and install carpet.
Ne.xt time you .stop by the house, he .sure and cheek out
one of the newly remodeled rooms. A good two-man room
to see is Rocky Top, redone by Greg Warren and .John Drury
over the summer of 1988 at a cost of 81200. The thing that

RUSH CLEANUP
This year, like all years, rush was preceded by rush cleanup.
Like always the entire house was scrubbed down and painted.
The difference this year was that several new purchases were
made. New carpet was put into the tube room, two new
couches were bought for the commons area, a deep freezer
was bought for the kitchen and new lamps were bought for
the tube room. Some additional replacements were made,
including a new television which has ESPN capability. That
was a particular joy for the sports fans in the hou.se. Other
than this, not much out of the ordinary was done, except that
the whole house was cleaned up. This year, like last, we heard
many comments from nishees that we had the best looking
house on campus. We are proud that it is. We hope to see
you during the upcoming year and hear your thoughts.
remember it in years to come.
