Hello Brothers,
Thanks to those of you who came in

welcome anytime, but when several
graduates are here at the same event, |
know you find it more meaningful.
The football team is getting on track
after a couple of weeks off, and we are
already fired up for volleyball.
Ethan Rohloff from our San Diego
State chapter visited us during
homecoming week starting Phi Gam’s
first officer exchange program.

Hopefully we will be sending one of our
new officers to San Diego State early
next year.
We are extremely proud of our
nineteen new pledges. Over 100
rushees registered with us during
pre-rush and rush which allowed us to
pick from the very best freshmen. Two
sophomores became pledges giving
leadership to the pledge class.
The BCA had a very productive
workshop late this summer, and |
encourage each member to follow up
on his committee or his chairman. Your
support as a graduate is crucial.
This is my last “letter” to you in my
capacity as president. | have enjoyed
serving the chapter in this role. The
hard work of you, the graduates, as well
as the undergraduates has made my
experience most rewarding. Thank you.
Fraternally,
Barry L. Bell ’89

House Purchase Completed by TFI
by Randy Wilmore ’82
August 2, 1988, marked a significant
day in Theta Tau Chapter history as the
purchase of the current Chapter House
and property by Tech Fijis, Inc. was
completed. The property consists of the
main house, the back apartment, and
two lots whose measurements total
150’ x 100’, approximately 1/4 of the
block it occupies. The purchase price
was $95,000, $6,000 of which was paid
down, with the remainder financed
through a mortgage from First
American Bank on which the previous
owners agreed to serve as guarantors.
Monthly payments are about $880.00
compared to the monthly rental TFI
was paying of $750.00. Of course there
are the additional expenses of property
taxes, property insurance, and upkeep.
Prior to the purchase, the TFI Board
modified the 88-89 budget and
provided coverage for all expenses
except $2500.00. This is money which
TFI is currently raising through pledges
from Graduate Brothers. So far about
20 grads have given an average pledge
of $75.00 for this year (88-89).
Currently long range plans are being
developed for financing of the house as
well as renovations, or rebuilding, and
utilization. This is being undertaken in
conjunction with project STARS and its
Subcommittee on Finance and Housing.
During this academic year the Brothers,
grad and undergrad, on this committee
will review all the number of possibilities
which have been presented to them so
far, as well as any other proposals
which someone would like to submit.
Thanks to these Brothers for their contributions!

One of the goals of the chapter is to
eventually provide housing for all
members (juniors and seniors) because
of the belief that this will truly enhance
the fraternity experience. Also, safety
and security are top priorities.
As for the housing of all members,
currently freshmen and sophomores
must reside in dorms. This would leave
only juniors and seniors eligible for the
Chapter House or apartments. This fall
there were 28 brothers who were
eligible to live off-campus. Next year
there will be between 26 and 30. The
Brothers have indicated a willingness to
have mandatory housing requirements
if good facilities were present. They,
along with the members of the BCA,
have indicated a belief that this would
benefit the Chapter by improved
communication, more productive
programming (you're already there for
an event), and increased brotherhood
away from the development of cliques.
These are just some of the ideas
being discussed. Also, there is the
immediate problem of parking. The land
where the Chapter has been parking
and playing volleyball was sold in
October, and the Chapter must relocate
both before January when construction
will begin on that property. The parking
is the most imperative because the
zoning of the house depends on
providing ample parking for residents
and guests.
As you can see, TFI has not been at
rest. They are working hard to provide
safe and secure facilities which provide
ample services to the members of the
Chapter. But the house is not only
important to those there now, but also to
all graduates so that there is a central
point, a place to return to at
Homecoming and Pig Dinner. All of
these objectives are trying to be met by
TFI. But it is a continuing challenge. If
you would like to make a contribution,
please mail to: Martin Hunt, 1333
Candlewick, Knoxville, TN 37932. We
need your help.
