New AlcoholPolicy
On August 16, the Archons amended the Risk
Management Policy of the Fraternity to provide that,
as of July 1, 2000, all chapter houses and property
will be substance-free.
This means no alcohol or
controlled substances (drugs and paraphernalia). Of
course, it has always been against fraternity law to
have drugs on chapter property. (The substance free
policy does not apply to tobacco, although we do
encourage chapters and house corporations to con
sider seriously the safety and health issues related to
smoking in the house.)
The Archons adopted the substance free provision
for a number of reasons, including:
1. Alcohol, as currently used throughout our under
graduate chapters, exerts too great an influence on
the condition ofour fiutemity — in neighbor relations
problems, in damage to chapter houses, in below
FijiMailer Instructions
Sigma Mu took the initiative to move its commu
nication with graduates to a new level with the
1995 implementation ofa email server called
"Fijimailer".
Currently, there are over 50 grads and undergrads getting nearly daily email via Fijimailer. Fi
jimailer is basically an e-mail address that acts as a
hub for information sent via e-mail.
Once you subscribe (at no personal cost), you
will be able to send a message to Fijimailer, and it
will in turn be distributed to everyone who has
subscribed to it. Every time someone else sends a
message to Fijimailer, it will also be mailed to your
e-mail address.
average grades at the majority ofchapters, in univer
sity relations, in creating legal liability.
Fijimailer is a great new way to talk to the broth
ers you haven't heard from in a while and to com
municate with the undergraduate chapter. We en
courage you to subscribe as soon as possible so we
can keep up with new happenings in your lives,
2. The use of alcohol does not contribute to accom
and you can be informed about what is going on
plishing the mission of the Fraternity, and the
around here.
overuse or abuse ofalcohol makes it more difficult to
accomplish that mission.
To subscribe to Fijimailer, all you have to do is
3. The public and many potential members view
fraternities only as places to party. In particular,
send an e-mail message to:
many potential members believe that joining a frater
nity will hurt them academically.
4. Occupants of fraternity houses binge drink at a
higher rate than fraternity members living outside the
houses and at a much higher rate than non-affiliated
listproc@msstate.edu
men.
5. A significant majority (70 - 80%)of undergradu
ate brothers are under the age of 21. In many
chapters, the portion of the membership living in the
house who are under 21 is even higher, since in many
chapters seniors tend to live outside the house.
The Archons have provided almost three years until
the final transition date to allow adequate time for
education of brothers and chapters on the need for
this change and for implementation. We will be
encouraging chapters to make the transition sooner.
We believe that this MUST be the future of the
fraternity system and that the sooner chapters adapt,
the better off they will be.
Leave the subject heading blank. On the first line
ofthe body ofthe message type the following line:
subscribe fijimailer
Then just send the message and you should re
ceive a welcome reply and instructional listing
in a few days. For example, if John T. McCarty
were subscribing today, he would enter the follow
ing line in the first line ofthe body ofthe email:
subscribe fijimailer John McCarty
If you have any other questions regarding this, feel
free to email the Fijimailer supervisor, Mark Du
mas, at "mark.e.dumas@CDmx.saic.com".

Our last house corps
meeting was Octotier 11th.
This semester we have spent
over $2500 simply on house
maintenance. There have
t)een many major purchases
made the past two years on a
new kitchen stove and house
siding, in addition to normal
house upkeep. Because of
lack of money in the house
corps, the undergraduate
chapter has had to cover
most of these costs. We en
courage you to help support
Sigma Mu chapter by partici
pating in our draft program.
