UPSILON ALPHA STRIVES FOR EXCELLENCE
Dear brothers,
Brothers of Tucson and numerous
At Upsilon Alpha, we strive for
something better. We clearly under

provide us with the opportunity to
commit ourselves to new projects that
stand that excellence is attainable, but
only through our most diligent efforts.
The spring of 1997 has provided us
with the opportunity to build upon our
strong foundation and move forward
into the 21st century.

course of the semester. I have made it
very clear that this is something I
would like to see change.
We have begun an intensive recon
struction of our Scholarship Program.
We are holding our Second Annual
Scholarship Brunch in April. This pro
vides an opportunity for professors to
meet the brothers in an environment
outside of the classroom.
A special dinner for all those
who earn a GPA of 3.00 or better has
been implemented as well. Several
guest speakers have been lined up to
help the brothers improve their time
management, study skills and faculty
relations.
And finally, through the generous
donation of one of our members'
father, Mr. Calihan, we have received
a fax and copy machine.
We at Upsilon Alpha know the im
portance of scholarship and are doing
everything in our power to improve
upon it.

Phi Gam Socials:
Best on the Arizona Campus
Fellow Phi Gam brothers,
I am pleased to inform you of the
outstanding year Upsilon Alpha has
experienced socially in the fall semes

with a bang by socializing and frater
nizing with friends and family in late
October. Upsilon Alpha celebrated a
great time entertaining the friends and
family of the women of ITBO. All

the creativity and spirit categories. The
women of FOB were a tremendous
asset to the weekend festivities. Our
tent gained the most attention during
the float parade, perhaps due to our
portable barbecue trailer which served
everything from chicken to ribs!

The Upsilon Alpha Chapter is
making continuous strides toward
academic greatness. Leading the fra
ternity system with a 2.9 CPA last
spring paved the way for an even
better fall. This past semester, we were
fortunate enough to receive two new
computers, a fax machine and a copy
machine. We feel that gaining these
technological assets will help further
"Mexican Fiesta" as the theme for the
weekend. With the help of many of
the parents and brothers, we were able
to transform the house into a festive
event enjoyed by all. To help keep the
event true to its name, we were able to
get an authentic Tex-Mex band all the
way from Benson, AZ. With the input
of a few of the brothers' mothers,
Mexican flowers and decorations were
placed all over the house. Of course,
we didn't forget about the food and
drinks. Food was catered by
McCayo's, which gave us a great price
on all the items. Lastly, authentic
Mexican beer and spirits were catered
by CAL Productions.
In preparation for the event, many
improvements were made to the
house. A new winter lawn was put in,
which included landscaping with river
All in all, this past Family Week
end was a great time for all the fami

mothers complained to me that she
had such a good time that on Sunday,
her head was a little sore. Lastly, I
would like to say thank you to the

advice and knowledge on university
subjects. We will also be holding a
faculty brunch in mid-April, in which
each of the brothers will invite their

Spring Rush '97
Spring rush was a great success,
and Upsilon Alpha has grown with yet
another outstanding pledge class. With
only 150 men participating in spring
rush, the brothers had to work
diligently to find those men who
exemplify the spirit of Upsilon Alpha.
We are extremely proud of these 10

pledges and are looking forward to
their becoming brothers in Upsilon

Alpha. Two of them. Tommy Maison
and Dave Russo, hold positions on the
Interfratemity Council, and the rest
are busy involving themselves with
several philanthropies.
1 know that throughout the year,
these men will grow to carry on the
traditions of Fiji. We are proud and

group of men in the 1997 spring rush
and look forward to the possibilities
for the fall.
