Winter 1997
University of Georgia
Azaleas. White Oaks. Dogwoods. The spring has returnedjoyfully to the campus
ofthe University ofGeorgia. With it comes the usual high expectations ofathletics,
activities, and academics which the Fiji's place upon themselves at the beginning
ofeach quarter. The basketball continues, the whiffle ball awaits, but nevertheless,
the Brothers ofPhi Gamma Delta know that the spring lies ahead and soon after
is abundant revelry. French Whore, Jock Connell, Fiji Island, Native Weekend.
The list goes on. But the primary thought which hovers above the undergraduate
Brjthers is continuing the excellence which has been placed so graciously in our
hands. Often we are unaware ofthe magnitude ofthe accomplishments done by
our predecessors. Approaching the 30th Anniversary of the reemergence ofthe
Kappa Deuteron Chapter, it is appropriate to take a moment to thank the people
yvho have made my experience of being a Fiji at the University of Georgia so
valuable. Without the steadfastness of the early pioneers, every advantage and
opportunity thatPhi Gamma Delta has presented over time to an undergrad would
not exist Just sitting at this computer is not possible without the support and
dedication of the Brothers as undergrads and more importantly as graduate
brothers. We have a beautiful house and the bestfront porch in Athens according
to Tilloy. Every summer, the International Fraternity recognizes the Kappa
Deuteron Chapterfor overall excellence and in particularfor graduate relations.
Needless to say, closing in on its 30th year. Kappa Deuteron has well exceeded its
expectations but has yet to reach its potential With Pig Dinner just around the
corner on April 19th, the undergrads invite everyone to join them in a round of
applausefor the dedication you have all shown to thefraternity and proving once
again that Phi Gamma Delta is indeed notfor college days alone.
\r\nGavel Report
Scott Mulkey, President
The beginning ofspring quarter finds the Kappa Deuteron Chapter excelling once again.
With the results in from winter quarter, the Fiji's placed first in grades with a 3.12 GPA following
the first place fall quarter. Athletically, the basketball and soccer teams had strong seasons and
now we're gearing up for the softball and indoor soccer events. Phi Gamma Delta also placed
high in community service hours due to all ofthe brother's charitable work at the Alps Road
Elementary School, our Partner in Education, and active involvement in the Scottish Rite and
Egleston Hospitals through the Children's Miracle Network Dance Marathon.
Early winter quarter. Kappa Deuteron saw the addition oftwenty five new brothers with
the initiation ofthe fall pledge class. This is a strong pledge class with many talents in various
areas and I am confident in their ability to become outstanding brothers.
The winter also brought upon us a Chapter Retreat with Frank Hanna('83) as keynote
speaker. The retreat served as a reminder that we can never give as much as we receive fi'om the
fi'atemity as Brother Hanna's words proved that Phi Gamma Delta is not for college days alone.
Communication continues to be a success through the Board of Chapter Advisors and the House
Corporation. The two committees have produced several needed plans for improvements on Pig
Dmner and the House. The GAMMA fund has become a successful avenue to fund small
improvements for now and larger improvements in the future. Thanks again for the graduate
support and we look forward to seeing everyone at Pig Dinner on April 19.
Report of the Purple Legionnaire
Jere Morehead(Georgia Faculty)
The highlight of winter quarter was a chapter retreat where the undergraduate brothers
gathered to discuss a variety ofissues and concerns. I served as the group facilitator for the
retreat and Frank Hanna was our guest speaker. I only wish all of you could have heard Frank s
inspinng remarks to the undergraduates. We also made great progress this quarter on a variety o
housing improvements that culminated in a very successful meeting in Athens led by House
President Bob Cheeley and House Treasurer Jim Boyles. Gale Conley, Trey Googe, Billy Holley,
and Aaron Price also were in attendance and have provided significant support to the House
Corporation in recent months. BCA President David Hanna also held a winter meeting in Atlanta
where the BCA developed a great schedule for Pig Dinner that will be held April 19th at the new
Classic Center in Athens.
I have been privileged to work with another outstanding group of officers this year under
the leadership ofPresident Scott Mulkey. Scott and the fellow officers remain committed to
upholding the high standards you helped establish at Kappa Deuteron. They need your help in
providing the names of highly qualified incoming UGA freshman or sophomores as possible
rushees. The chapter was fortunate to pledge, with your help, an outstanding class this past year
and they need your support to accomplish that goal again. With continued support from you, our
undergraduates will keep FIJI #1 at Georgia.
I look forward to visiting with you at Pig Dinner.
\r\nG.A.M.M.A.
Thus far, the G.A.M.M.A. project has been a success. Once again, we would like
to thank the following brothers who contributed. If we have left your name off
this list, we apologize and please let us know that you have contributed. Thanks
again for your support in keeping FIJI the place as you remember it.

Distinguished Brother Drew Wade is finally getting married, even though just a
formality, this summer to his longtime girlfriend Julie Mickle.
Even more distinguished Brother Evan Howell is spending the quarter under the
impression he is learning at Oxford in London.
Brothers Scott Mulkey,Jay Roberts, and Jeff Langford were inducted into the
exclusive Omicron Delta Kappa Society.
\r\nAfter a successful Fall rush and a constructive pledgeship, we initiated 25 men who
we expect to continue the Fiji tradition.

This has been a very exciting year, thus far,
for Kappa Deuteron's philanthropy. Not
only have many brothers been involved with
charity work associated with the fraternity,
but many brothers have gone above and
beyond the call of society. The chapter's
main involvement is still with Alps Road
Brian Nixon and Alex Ferguson, Brother
Nixon chaired the Physical Plant Committee
for the Dance Marathon which raised over
$33,000 for the Children's Miracle Network.
Brother Ferguson raised $4300 in a
fundraiser in which he hiked 111 miles for
Leukemia. Upon completion of his tenure,
Elementary. Brothers volunteered their time
Brother Nixon has decided to donate his

time to square dancing videos on TNN.
Brother Glenn raised his hair even more
Also of special mention is Brother's Jay
helping with the "Static Electricity" display.
Saville and Andrew McAllister's recent work
A couple of special brothers to mention are
with High Schools in the Hall County area.

\r\nPig Dinner Reminder
April 19th is coming up soon, so we hope everyone has sent in their invitations.
Remember to mark on the invitation if you wish to play golf. We hope everyone
car come and enjoy the fim that is planned. If you have any questions, feel free to
call or write.
Editor's Note
Graduate involvement is the key to the success of our fraternity and I know everyone is busy, so I
thank those of you that helped me gather the information for some articles. The FIJIUGA serves
mainly as a form ofcommunicating the undergraduates thanks for the Graduate support and also
to keep everyone up to date. Without the graduate involvement in this process, I'm afraid that the
FIJIUGA will not be serving it's purpose. If you have any suggestions on improvement, please
feel free to email me at bmauldin@arches.uga.edu. Thanks again for the help and I look forward
to seeing everyone at Pig Dinner.
Fraternally,
Brad Mauldin
