Striving to be Number One
The House Needs Youp\Support
Dear Brothers:
By Douglas B. Welsh '94, Chapter President
Things are looking up for good old Gamma Phi. So much is
Fall of1993 found Gamma Phi entering its ibSth year at
The Pennsylvania State University. The chapter hous^^ters its
78th year, with additions made in the early '50s now tun
"40-something.''
During the last five years, the house corporation has spent
over $170,000 on repairs, renovations and maintenance. Very
litde ofthis expenditure is visible; for example, repairs to the
slate roof, plumbing, steam system, security system and
hardwood flooring have all been made, but are not readily
apparent.
Property managers state that approximately 3 percent of
the value ofa structure should be put annually into repair and
maintenance. The help that our house needs is not the result of
abnormal wear and tear by the undergraduates. It is really a
result of not being able to afford to perform the maintenance,
repairs and renovations on an ongoing basis.
In meetings with the State College building inspector, he
assured me that our house is in better condition than most, but
not as good as some.
Getting to the point, we need your help to continue to
make the necessary improvements and repairs. At this point,
going on I do not Imow where to start, so I guess I'll start
with the summer. This past summer Josh Roehm '94, Joe
Plszkoch '94 and I reseeded the front lawn. We also managed
to do some pruning and light landscaping. Our main goal was
to keep the Lodge looking nice for summer visitors.
Before returning to Happy Valley from my internship in
Washington, D.C.,I learned the chapter was on the
rMevelopment program of the International Fraternity.
Immediately, the cabinet and I went to work to bring Gamma
Phi Dflck to national prominence.
m returning to Penn State for the fall semester,1
realized we were on the right track. After a chapter meeting, the
brotherhood began to rally, and we committed ourselves to
making Improvements. Our biggest boost came from installing
our new Purple Legionnaire, Michael Mische '76. Mike has
broughn to the chapter an enthusiasm I have not seen before.
He has motivated this chapter to aim at the best once again.
With Mike's help we have come up with some chapter goals
which include improved scholarship (3.0 GPA), better alumni
relaticms and a better overall chapter tone.
'
believe the old adage goes,"Actions speak louder than
significantly. Like Beta Theta Pi,Sigma Pi,Theta Chi and
woros." Well Gamma Phi has taken action. The chapter held a
successful sorority presidents' dinner to show the ladies the new
others at Penn State, we see the need to mount a capital
campaign in the near future. However,we have some needs
the/ladies was given a rose before she left. After having the
undergraduate chapter rental falls far short of helping
that are immediate and critical.
We need your supp>ort in the form of"graduate dues" or
"giving" now. At this time,21 graduate brothers have made
contributions ranging from $25 to $200 for 1993-94. We
thank them and ask for your support. Gamma Phi has over 900
living graduates and our needs can be met with your response
Gamma Phi. All the brothers wore a coat and tie and each of
event, the chapter won the Friday Letter Project of the Month
for September!
We have also held a successful alumni reception. The class
of 1953 had very high attendance. Hospitality is once again
amma Phi's strength!
Another asset is our director ofredevelopment, Jude
stcalf(Washington State '92). Jude visited the chapter on
in whatever amount you choose. Please respond with your
contribution to: GraAunU Records Office, Phi Gamma.Delta.

Thank you for your contribution.

to make them pay off. His visit was a successful one. Jude and
Mike wantv^e chapter to win the Condon Cup. This award is
given to the mpst-improved chapter. Gamma Phi is committed
to winning this award.
The project trie chapter is now undertaking is to restore
the club room to its old prominence. It is our goal to make it
the jewel ofthe house race again. It is receiving a fresh coat of
paint and some new decorations are being added. The chapter
and I encourage you to take, the time to stop by.

The 1994 Dance Marathon will usher in the beginning ofa
new partnership for the brothers of Fiji. The sisters of Alpha
Omicron Pi wiU join with the guys from the Lodge in an effort to
help the kids ofthe Four Diamonds Fund, a charity to benefit
In closing, I believe themouse is on an upswing. The
brothers want to be number one again. The chapter does need
the support and the direction i )f our graduate brothers, though.
We need you to help us get ba:k an top. C. J. Wagner '83 is
heading up a Board of Chapw .^visers and could probably use
some help.
Hope to see yoy-artJie Lodge soon!
