Since the last publication of the Hoosier均v in May of 1994, SeVeral events surrounding the legacy of Raintne Couno
author, Brother Ross Lockridge Jr. have been brought to my attention. This past summer, due to Brother Francis E. Wylie
s (
and its
28) letter,
I became inspired to undertake the reading of the highly acclaimed novel. A small vocabulary such as my own can hardly scrape up the
praise for such a work, SO let me borrow some more articulate appraisers…"What Ross Lockridge most desired was to write the great
American novel, and in his mammoth RaintI宅e Connり′, he appeared to have succeeded, if greatness could ever be measured by sales
volume, book‑Club adoption and a huge deal with MGM for the novel

一May 2, 1994). Larry Lockridge, a literary critic, teaCher of romantic
literature at New Ybrk University and one of Brother Lockridge
s sons, just recently put to print a 499 page book which accounts for the
success and tragedy of his father
s life, entitled Shade Q声he Raintne・ He was cited as saying that Brother Lockridge
s book may be
・iThe most ambitious attempt at encycIopedic fom in American literature." This statement was made after comparing it to such novels
as Thomas Pynchon‑s G者aviり′ Rainbo明John Barth‑s Sotweed励eto′男Wi11iam Gaddis's Recognitions and Joseph McElroy
s VIbmen
and Men. On March 6, 1948, about one week after realizing that his book made it to the top of the best seller list, Brother Ross
Lockridge Jr. committed suicide in his garage by running his car's tailpipe血ough the window of his car. He was only 33.

Similar in respect to its style with the recent box o純ce hit, For′eSt Gz
mp, this novel encompasses the life of the Republic during the
second half of the 19th century The main character, John, 1eads the reader back through our history as he reminisces the times of
change with life置long friends throughout the duration of this festive day. This impressive, historically‑based novel allows the reader to
expIore the true sense of life as it was during the era. Leaving no stone unturned, Bro血er Ross Lockridge・ Jr. 1eaves the reader with a
greater appreciation of our heritage. Needless to say, I gained more insight about our country from this book than any history class at
IU has ever tried to teach me.
As I neared completing the novel, midway through August
it was brought to my attention血at Brother Lockridge's wife
Vemie
Lockridge Noyes, PaSSed away on August 8th. She was said to be瓜e inspiration for the character Nell in the book. Memorial
contributions may be made to the scholarship funds established in honor of Ross Lockridge
Jr. and Russell Noyes who was her second
husband and a professor of English at IU.

Zeta‑s Report From The 146th Ekklesia
Zeta chapter sent eight bro血ers to this past summer‑s 146th Ekklesia in Kansas City・ Brothers Kaplan
Marshall, Ryan・ Klineman・
Hipskind, Pfafflin, Doonan and Ransom had a wonder餌time meeting brothers from around the country. Zeta was able to bring several
innovative ideas back to Indiana.
An unprecedented restructuring of the Archonate took place in Kansas City. For瓜e first time in Phi Gamma Delta history
undengraduate brothers will serve as Archons" This move was accompanied by s億Ong SxpPOrt throughout
tWO
and should streng血en Phi
Gan血a Delta as an intemational fratemity.
Zeta chapter hoped to bring血e coveted Cheney Cup back from Kansas City after having such a successful year at IU. Be∞hwood
丘nished a very respectable third place, following New tbrk University and the University of Wdshington. The undergraduate bro血ers
feel very strongly瓜at next year will be血e year to retum the Cheney Cup to Beechwood. We were also recognized for Baker Cup and
Brightman廿ophy. Zeta nearly brought home血e Zeman Thophy fbr CamPuS invoIvement but was edged out by血e University of
Tennessee.
Overall, the 146th Ekklesia was a huge success for the Zeta brothers, and we look to only improve at next summer‑s FIJI Leadership
Academy.

Over the years, Zeta chapter has proudly excelled at academics. However
血ere has been some question as to our e塑
perfomance to date. The fo11owing tables were tabulated from o飾cial university records kept in the Student Activities O能ce. The
tables post血e fo11owing three GPAs for each semester‥ 1) the entire chapter‑s GPA
Which includes血e pledge‑s GPA
and our rank
against the other chapters (roughly 27 over the years); 2) the pledge's GPA, and our rank in accordance to other chapter pledge classes
at IU; 3) and the all men's average for the entire university. It is important to note血at the岬ring ple勿e g朋des usua11y consist of two
to four pledges who were not initiated after their細I semester. It should be understood that
eVen though this table is only for the past
20 semesters, Zeta chapter has been above the all men・s average every year since records have been kept ‑ SOme 35 years!

In血e years for which no grades were given, reCOrds at瓜e Student Activities o縦ce did not have them on胤e. However・ it
should be important to note血at in 1987, Zeta won the coveted Cheney Cup. Therefore, it would be a logical deduction血at血e

丁he Zeta Chapter underwent some major structural and cosmetic improvements this past summer. The two most
extensive projects were new ceilings and light fixtures in all the hallways, and the.ther was the expansion of our
computer room. The previous computer room was expanded by knocking down the wh亘̀ the serving room (adjacent
to the computer room〉 and using that space to spread out the new computers. They weratought last year with a grant
from the Beechwood Education Foundation. The bathrooms were given a faceli鮎when new sinks and counter tops were
installed. Also, eXtenSive cleaning of the tile in the bathrooms and in the kitche上Were COmPleted this past summer. A
new basketball goal was put up in the parking lot, and new grass and bushes調聾e planted in the front of the house to

game, Or Other event, Please stop by and have dimer with us. Special thanks also goes out to Mel Brewer (一67), Who was
responsible for s皿ng down with the kitchen staff and helping raise the quality of food that we are now having. Many
other minor repairs were accomplished this summer, and we hope to see graduate brotheγS here during football or
basketball weekends, Or for the Noris Pig Dinner.

Last year ended the three year tour of duty for David Clark Mil腿
(Chimp) as a law student and graduate advisor for Beechwood. His successor
is a Zeta alumni from the class of
91. Michael Camerson Ashman (Skeet) is
an optometry student who is making his father proud by continuing the family
name within the profession. Since his arrival a few weeks ago, Brother Ashman
has already helped out immensely with academic advising and chapter advis‑
