The Chain
The Graduate Newsletter of Lambda Omega Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta
Volume 3, Number 2, November, 1994
THE OPENING WORD
A short time back, 1 bad lunch with a graduate
brother. Our discussion wandered through up
dates of other graduates and stopped for a while
on the subject of the undergraduate chapter and its
1 have friends from university, high school and even
from grade school, hut they were guys you usually just
went to classes with. Then 1 have friends from work or
out that there were some graduate brothers who had
that 1 just met somehow - hut fraternity friends are
something other than that. It is something that bor
ders on the closeness of family which is why "brother
left university and the chapter, leaving money owing
hood" comes so easily to mind.
financial health. In response to his questions, 1 pointed
to the house. This would account for the fact that
money is not available to pay off the outstanding debts
to International and the House Corporation. Our
conversation centered around why any brother would
do this, considering our shared ideals of brotherhood.
We had no answer. The other graduate expressed his
belief, in defence of those grads, that all brothers
eventually live up to their responsibilities and pay
what they legitimately owe. I salute his optimism and
faith in our fellowship.
This edition of The Chain contains a brief report on
the Ekklesia held in Kansas City from August 10 to 13,
1994. It also has some information about next year's
Pig Dinner. Mark February 5, 1995 on your calendar. As
well, there are the normal tidbits of news, quizzes and
general chatter. 1 hope you enjoy this effort as much as
1 have enjoyed its preparation.
John G. Starzynski
But it is more than that too. To some in the brother
hood, the fraternity was just something to join so that
they had something under "extracurricular" on their
resume. To some after graduation, it is simply a vehicle
for getting leads for life insurance sales. But to some,
the fraternity meant friendships that will last forever.
We all donated our money hut more importantly was
volunteering our effort. Whether it was as trivial as
playing hall hockey or as monumental as gaining
respect on campus. As temporary as mowing the lawn
or as permanent as house improvements. As noble as
raising money for charity or as selfish as getting girls to
our parties. No matter how big or how small the
problem, we always seemed to take up the next fight.
We didn't always win, hut we always took pride in our
accomplishments. A lot of pride actually, because with
only limited resources, we knew our efforts were
improving that little slice of our world. And when we
looked around and realized we couldn't he achieving
those results, we knew we had friends.
REFLECTIONS FROM THE PAST
■ recently received a letter from a brother I hadn't
heard from in years. I returned a letter with some of
my news. When it arrived, he gave me a phone call
and we chatted for almost an hour. Now, he had been
in japan since graduating, living as an English teacher,
a bartender, and playing in hands. Whereas 1 had had a
good job, car, apartment and girlfriend hut left it all to
backpack around parts of the world. Needless to say,
we had plenty to talk about hut instead, we ended up
talking about surfin' and foozehall as if we just hung
out together last weekend.
1 think this is starting to sound too much like an
epilogue to a Wonder Years episode. We all know there
was also a lot of plain old fun and even a hit of de
bauchery. But that alone won't explain why we did all
that effort stuff. Now maybe those efforts don't
amount to a hill of beans in this crazy, mixed-up world
today. Maybe those accomplishments were never
appreciated by anyone else. Maybe your name never
got on a trophy. Or maybe it did - either way it doesn't
matter these days. All that really matters is friends,
regardless of how much time or space separates us.

\r\nSILVER OWL CERTIFICATES
At the Pig dinner on February 5, 1994, Lambda Omega
will be proud to present Silver Owl certificates to the
following brothers who are so important to the history
of our chapter, past and present who celebrate twentyfive (25) years of fraternity membership. Hopefully, all
of them will be able to attend this special event. Please
call, encourage, bribe, beg, kidnap, drive or do what
ever you can, or have to, to make sure they attend.

Ontario, trying to eke out a living, paying his taxes
and voting Reform. Rae has two children, Natalie Anne
born in 1977 and Christine Mary born in 1980. Rae's
wife, Allison Mary, has been named to the Board of
Governors at Western and is also on the Board of
Foundation Western. She served previously as the
President of the U.W.O. Alumni Association, only the
second woman to hold that position. It must be a busy
house with work, two teenage daughters and a very
active community-serving spouse! Rae places his birth
sometime before 1960 in Belleville, Ontario, which
may mean that he remembers the '70s. Rae's big
brother is John Frederick Soehner and his little
brother that he remembers is James Frank Coles. Rae
is also one of the original charter brothers to whom we

DONALD RAYMOND FISHER '81BA (127) - The last
listing for Don had him as a Major in the Canadian
Armed Services living in Zurich, Ontario. However,
Don has written to advise that he retired from the
military in November, 1987 and joined the Royal Bank
of Canada. There have been a number of moves over
the past six and one-half years. On July 4, 1994, he
moved from Manager, Human Resources Services Head
Office Operations and Service Delivery (Toronto)(how
would you like to have all that on a business card?) to
Manager, Operations, Taiwan, Republic of China.
Don's words are more eloquent than I could ever
precis. He writes on June 13, 1994 - "Besides fostering a
number of teenagers. Rose Marie (my wife) and 1 have
three children: Dustin Alexander, Stanton Royce
Emmanuel, and Samantha Brooke Alexandra. Things
are a bit hectic these days trying to arrange all the
details for the move, however, I'm constantly re
minded of the great times 1 had at Western and with
Phi Gamma Delta. Please keep in touch and if the cost
is too high (never! -ed note) to send the newsletters to
Taiwan please let me know so I can reimburse the
committee. Keep up the great work and next time I'm
in the London area, I'll drop by the house." Many
thanks to Don for the Dear John letter. Hopefully, we
will get a report from the China graduate chapter for a
from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He is
working for Rudnick, Wolf, at least for the summer. He
spent only a few months as an active brother at
Lambda (Omega before transferring to Michigan and
affiliating at the Alpha Phi chapter. The boys at West
ern must have done a good job of instilling fraternity
spirit in our brother when we hear about his continu

2. In 1969, the lads borrowed one of George
Dayman's flatbed trucks for the Fiji float for the
homecoming parade. The truck was driven by Jim
Young and Bob Storie who had liquid refreshment
to help them through the long, hot day. Because it
was a late entry, the float was the last in the
parade. Storie put the truck into gear and backed
into a police car, then put it into forward gear and
drove away. Unfortunately, George Hayman
witnessed this display and the boys were never
again lent a vehicle for a parade.

sacred nature of the charter has been made very
clear to all pledges.
4. The kidnapping of pledge trainer. Bob McCuIIoch
by the fall pledge class of 1968 - While the pledges
were in a training session with Magoo, Bill Szego
had arranged to have someone call him at the
house to get himself out of the library. Bill
padlocked the upstairs door while the brothers
were in a meeting and took Magoo to Bondi's Pizza
without disclosing to him what they had done.
When the meeting finished, the brothers who were
to soon vote on these pledges' future membership
in the chapter, had to kick down the door to get
downstairs (this was before the back staircase).
5. The kidnapping of pledge trainer, Peter Hockin

The experience of brotherhood mani
fests itself in many ways. Over the past
six months, I have been fortunate
enough to share time and the experi

from many grads. I have seen the

Lambda Omega brothers. 1 truly hope
