Reflecting Back On Rush...
In preparation for the semester ahead, the
brotherhood returned to RPI one week before classes
this fall. During this time, we held a rush seminar
and a chapter retreat at which goals and strategies
for our rush efforts were developed.
The fall semester took on a different tone this
year with the implementation of a semi-dry rush.
In response to the raising of New York's drinking
age, and for the purpose of de-emphasizing the use
of alcohol as a recruiting tool, the IFC issued a two
week period during which no alcohol was to be
served at fraternity-related functions. During this
time we held a Dance Party which proved to be
extremely successful as a rush event in addition to
being one of our best parties.
Fiji's calendar of rush events also included our
famous Volcano Party and Shorts and Shades Party,
among others. Our most successful rush events,
however, were those which allowed more personal
interaction between brothers and rushees. These
included our barbeques, sporting events, and
‘weekly study breaks. Three to Three, a twelve hour
event, formally marked the end of fall rush, The
efforts of all the brothers were rewarded as the 10
week period culminated with the formal pledging of
16 quality men.

Traditions of Excellence
This year's IFC awards banquet brought Tau Nu
to yet another height in its short history. We were
rewarded for our dedication and service to the
community by winning the Most Outstanding
Chapter Service Award for 1985-86. In addition,
our house QPA of 3.014 ranked number one again,
and consequently we were presented with the Sigma
Chi Trophy for highest average for the academic
year. Probably the most exciting award yet was
winning honorable mention for the Archon's Trophy
and being presented with the John T. McCarty
Chapter Proficiency Award at the 138th Ekklesia.
Personally, Brothers at Tau Nu have attained
honors. R. Scott Harris '87 is president of the Order
of Omega, a Greek honorary society. Ande Smith '87
is Battalion Commander for Naval ROTC, and Greg
Nyberg '86 was the Wilkinson Award winner for
Section IL.
To quote William S. Zerman (Michigan '49), Phi
Gamma Delta's past Executive Director:
“When I was a pledge and a newly initiated
member I wondered about the strength of Phi Gamma
Delta. Now, after 29 total years on the staff, I know.
There is no finer fraternity than ours."

\r\nPresident's
Column
With about one half of the
brothers graduating in May, the
chapter has once again found
itself in a period of transition.
Now, more than ever, a house
would help to further strengthen the brotherhood.
Any graduate support in this area would be
welcomed.
On another front, individual accomplishments by
Fijis on campus are at an all time high. There are
numerous Senators, the Judicial Board Chairman,
and many Navy ROTC officers. The future also looks
bright at Tau Nu. A strong sophomore class is
starting to become more active and looking forward
to future leadership positions within the chapter,
and the possibility of a house is probably as high as
it's ever been.
Overall, I have enjoyed my term as President, and
hope to be able to help the chapter during my last
few months at Tau Nu and as a graduate brother of
Phi Gamma Delta.
Fraternally,
Perge! George P. Norman '87
Purple Legionnaire's
Message
Tau Nu chapter is beginning
to make itself known in the
International Fraternity. At the
138th Ekklesia, we were again
recognized for chapter
proficiency via the John Templeton McCarty Award.
In addition, Tau Nu received an honorable mention
for the Archon's Trophy, awarded for excellence in
extracurricular activities. This fall the
International Fraternity, impressed with the goals
and objectives outline developed by the chapter,
forwarded the outline to Section Chiefs throughout
the Fraternity as a model for other chapters.
Finally, during his visit to Tau Nu, Field Secretary
Paul Davis commented that "Phi Gamma Delta is the
fraternity with 'class' on the RPI campus."
It was particularly good to see many Tau Nu
graduates, who helped bring the above about,
returning this fall for Brian Flynn's wedding and
the 3 to 3 function. Such continued interest
demonstrates that Phi Gamma Delta is "not for
college days alone", and we hope to see you again at
Pig Dinner this spring, or before if you have the
opportunity.
Fraternally,
Perge! Tom Burns (WPI '74)
s to Geoff Crosby and Paul Testa, who put so
much of their time and effort into this newsletter.
Editor's
Corner
This being the second and last
column that I write as editor, I
am proud to say that the chapter
continues to progress in all it's
actions.
At the Ekklesia over the summer, we placed
fourth in the Archon's Trophy, and once again won
the John T. McCarty chapter proficiency award. Tau
Nu continues in all it's glory. .
I am glad to see many of our graduates keeping in
touch with the chapter. It's great to hear from you!
I hope you like the new and improved version of the
Nu's. We're always striving for bigger and
better things. Take care and we hope to see you at
the Pig Dinner in April.

From The Scoreboard...
It has been another great semester of sports for
Fiji. In all three sports: softball, football, and
soccer, Fiji had a great regular season and a strong
showing in the playoffs.
Football was our greatest success this year. It
started off slow, but after a 6-0 win over Zeta Psi, it
came time to face previously unbeaten AEPi. We
came away with a convincing 24-0 win and evened
our record to 2-2. With a forfeit from RSE, Fiji
finished fourth in B-league with a 3-2 record. In
the first round of the playoffs it was time to face
B-league champions AEPi again, and Fiji was
victorious, scoring a 14-6 win. In_ the
quarter-finals, however, we faced a tough Sigma Chi
team and lost 13-6. Our effort was still enough to
win 12.5 Barker points, the most ever for our
football team.
The softball team finished the regular season 4-2
with wins over A Sig Phi, Zeta Psi, Phi Mu Delta, and
Phi Sig Sig and losses to Phi Kappa Theta and SAE.
We wound up tied for second place with Zeta Psi and
Phi Kappa Theta and in a mini-playoff with these
teams we earned a playoff spot. In the first round
against RSE we lost a close game with the score 7-5.
The soccer team finished first in C-league this
year with a perfect 5-0 record! Unfortunately, we
were taken out of the playoffs in the first round by
losing 1-0 to A-league Phi Kappa Theta.
The outlook for the winter looks great with our
raquetball, basketball, table tennis, and volleyball
teams being some of the best on campus. We hope to
continue our success into the winter and make this >
another great year for Fiji sports.

Service With A Smile
This fall has proven itself a busy and rewarding
time for Fijis involved in community service. In
the month of September, 15 of the brothers came to
the aid of St. Paul's church in Troy. Pure manpower
and man-hours were required to help restore two
old bell towers.
Fijis also cosponsored a halloween party with the
Alpha Gamma Delta sorority for children attending
the Pinewoods school for disabled. Costumes,
candy, cider, songs and games were all present as
college students shared an old holiday with
youngsters. The children returned their gratitude
by sending us all halloween cards, and a local
newspaper even ran a picture of the event.
As usual, Bingo evenings are still a chapter
favorite. Every weekend at least 3 Fijis can be
found working Bingo at the local Troy Boy's Club.
As the start of the year brought a good deal of
service, the year will also end on a promising note.
Roll up your sleeves as a Fiji blood drive is being
planned, and warm up your voices as Christmas
carolling for the Ronald McDonald House is soon to
come.

Socially Speaking...
The Social Committee is busier than ever this
semester. The Fiji rush party season got off to a
great start this year with over 150 guests at
Shorts-n-Shades. With a new and improved
double-spout volcano, the annual Volcano Party
went well and drew over 250 people in attendance.
We were one of the few fraternities to throw a
party during dry rush at RPI. Even so, it went very
well, making the first Fiji Dance Party a success.
Over 117 brothers, rushees and guests attended
this year's 3 to 3 Celebration. We held dinner at
the Albany Hilton, which added a touch of class.
Later, the party moved back to the RAHPs for
dancing. We were pleased to see many of our
graduates back for the weekend.
In general, it has been a banner year for Tau Nu
on the social scene. The committee is working to
continue Fiji's upward march, with more events
scheduled in the future. These include our annual
Tickets Party as well as an incredible Islander in
April.
