With financial problems hitting
the chapter in the past year, the
F/yY Missourian has had a tough
time hitting the presses, in the
past year we have been able to
publish only two issues, and
both were scaled down
versions. Just as the chapter's
money problems appear to be
resolved, so do the Fiji
Missourian's. With your advice
on what should be included and
what would be better left out,
we can begin another era of a
great newspaper for a great
chapter.

Editor, Fiji Missourian
Housemother
Scholarship at Chi Mu is on the
move up. The Fijis leaped from 23rd
among fraternities on campus to 17th,
a 23 percent rise. The highlight of the
fall semester may have been a record
four brothers attainment of the
perfect 4.0 grade point average,
including three from one pledge
class. Sophomores Dean Ellis, Roger
Glenski, and Mike Douglass, and
senior Mike Penny.
it's the second 4.0 for Ellis, who
hails from Cassvilie, Missouri. In fact,
in three semesters at the University,
he has received only one B. Eiiis
majors in Honors Interdisciplinary,
which allows him to pick three majors
and take equal numbers of classes
for each. As for this semester, Eiiis
says it should be very challenging,
"But nothing I can't handle."
it's the first 4.0 for Douglass, a
sophomore from St. Joseph. The
Finance major says it's going to be a
lot tougher this year. Douglass brings
in a 3.8 cumulative grade point into
this semester.
Chi Mu's housemother is halfway
through her second year at the
house, and her relationship with
house members has grown into a
Senior Mike Penny may have been
the most exciting story of the
semester. The St. Charles, Illinois
native captured straight A's in a
strong bond. Martha Fortney joined

center for the Missouri Tiger football
years at the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority
at the University. When that house
disbanded, Chi Mu saw the
opportunity to pick up an alreadyexperienced director.
Since her first day at the chapter,
Mom Fortney has noticed an
improved use of basic manners. She
says, "We're making a little more
progress with things like formal
dinner every Wednesday. With
speakers at the dinner, it makes for a
special and different meal."
Mom says, "We aren't living in a
boarding house," and every chapter
should have a special meaning. She
says much of the building of this
uniqueness is based on common
respect for others.

She has worked with students for
34 years, so nothing really surprised
her at Chi Mu.
Mom feels she has three major
responsibilities as housemother. She
should teach and train manners, be in
charge of guests in the house, and
plan and budget meals.

Please do not over-rate a young man.
It is an injustice to him and to the

a man who is able to afford fraternity

proposed a system with an estimated
cost of $4000. Patterson, who has
considerable knowledge of computer

I certainly enjoyed the current Fiji
Mlssourlan, particularly John
Mcllroy's recollection of the 1964 FIJI
Island party.
While this occurred two years
before I even arrived at 704 College, It
was general knowledge that the

The "News From Chi Mu" Is a
refreshing change to the Mlssourlan. I
particularly liked the brevity, low cost,

I appreciate the Invention of the

establish some structure to It; give It

something of value to each other!
What do you think that might be?
Quite frankly, I really care very little
about the condition of the house, how
rush turned out, or whether the
budget Is balanced. I do care a lot
about what you and your brothers

House Improvements are always
being sought by FIjIs In Columbia.
The highlight this year Is a plan for a
newly remodeled basement. Chi Mu's
House Corporation said that If the
current house members maintained
good conditions In the house and
kept their grades at a respectable
level, they would be rewarded with
the renovation of the downstairs
social section.
The Improvements will consist of:
a new floor, new wall paneling, a bar,
and new furniture. The basement
already has a completely new celling.
Specific plans for when the work
will begin and the cost of the
Improvements have not been
arranged. But one thing Is for sure:
the FIjIs are very excited about the
upcoming house improvements.
