om the Presidente Spring 94
Brothers,
It gives me great pleasure to
have this opportunity to fill you
in on the current status of the
Rho Phi Chapter here at Rose-
Hulman Institute of Technology
in Terre Haute, Indiana. It has
been awhile since we have sent
biannual
out our Rose-Fiji.
With the new cabinet and new _ President Joseph Labbe
committee chairmen, the Rose Fiji is back on track and the
rest of the committees are doing an excellent job and work-
ing toward their own specific goals.
At the start of the year the brothers attacked Rush with a
great attitude. Rush chairman, brother James Connerley
(CE *94) did a great job. Our chapter will grow to 81 mem-
bers when the 22 new pledges join the rest of us as fully ini-
tiated brothers in Phi Gamma Delta. Brother Chris Riley
(ME *96) has already begun working on next years Rush so
that we can continue to have such a strong chapter.
Throughout the year the brothers have been active on
and off campus. While our league champion intramural
football team remained undefeated for the second straight
year, our intramural basketball and soccer teams are forces
to be reckoned with as they are at the top of their respective
divisions. In varsity sports, FIJIs are active now in baseball,
track and field, and tennis, and throughout the year in foot-
ball, cross country, basketball, and wrestling. Former chap-
ter President Phil Stolz (ME ‘95) is now president of IFC,
and several other brothers participate in the Inter-Fraternity
Council. Brother Rob Wallace (ME ‘95) is the SGA (Stu-
dent Government Association) president while two other
brothers are senators.
Off campus, FIJIs continue to give a little bit of them-
selves back to the community. The Rho Phi chapter is still
taking care of a two mile stretch of Highway 46, and during
the Holiday Season the people from Happiness Bag come
to visit for dinner and gifts from the brothers. Brother John
Proctor (EE *94) took it upon himself to take all of the
remaining angels off of the Salvation Army’s angel tree,
and all of the brothers got together to buy all of the under-
privileged children, represented by the angels, gifts. Many
of the brothers regularly attend church, and Brother Brady
Neukam (EE *94) is president of St. Joseph’s Campus Cen-
ter Student Council.
This year the house has undergone several changes and
will continue to change this coming summer. Early this
year a House Improvement Committee was formed in order
to determine what needed to be done to improve the house.
With the House Corporation’s approval and financial sup-
port, the house now has two new computers and all of the
software the brothers need to get the grades and remain
above the all men’s average. The house also has new phone
lines to each of the rooms downstairs, which makes it much
easier for the brothers to get in touch with girlfriends, fam-
ily members, and friends. The big change may take place
this summer as the chapter is hoping to get a new chapter
room in back. The House Improvement Committee will be
getting the plans and the brothers’ ideas together this spring
so that a proposal can be made to the House Corporation
for a new chapter room. I would like to thank the House
Corporation for their support and for providing us with the
finances to complete these improvements to the house.
In closing, I would like to thank Brother Mark Boenke
(CE *92), our Purple Legionnaire, for all of his help and
guidance and for working so hard to get in touch with the
graduates. I would also like to thank Brother Joe Weist for
all of the work he has done with the House Improvement
Committee and also for everything he has done for the Rho
Phi chapter. His help and guidance is always greatly appre-
ciated. Finally, I would like to invite all of the graduate
brothers to visit their chapter house this spring. We have
many things going on and it would be great to see a lot of
graduates back. If you cannot make it this spring, remem-
ber that Rho Phi will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in
the fall of ‘94. The brothers that are responsible for getting
Rho Phi started will be receiving their Silver Owl Awards.
Everyone mark your calendars and plan on returning to see
where you spent four of the hardest and most fun years of
your life. You will be hearing more about our 25th anniver-
sary in the future. I hope to see everyone.
Forever and Always, Proud to be a FIJI

Intramurals
The men of FIJI once again have been very active in intramu-
ral sports this year, capturing league championships in football
and basketball.
Almost every brother has participated in intramural sports
during the year, and with Spring coming, the FIJIs will hit the
diamond in hopes of taking another league championship in soft-
ball.
Brother Chris Wheatley (CE, 95) and Brother Charles
Holloway III (ChE, 96) have served as athletic committee chair-
man this year. They have been responsible for getting teams orga-
nized and communicating with Greg Ruark, director of
intramural sports at Rose-Hulman.
Intercollegiate Sports
FIJIs have also made their presence known in NCAA Divi-
sion III sports at Rose-Hulman, competing in the Indiana Colle-
giate Athletic Conference.
Winter sports have recently ended, and several FIJIs per-
formed very well during the 1993-94 season.
Basketball ®
Seven Rho Phi brothers participated on the 1993-94 Fighting
Engineers basketball team and five of those players earned var-
sity letters. The Engineers finished the season with a 10-15
record, winning the Rose-Hulman Invitational for the seventh
straight year.
Earning varsity letters were:
Mike Lawrence (ChE, 94) - four year letterman
Chris Wheatley (CE, 95) - three-year letterman
Rob Waller (ME, 96) - two-year letterman
Benj Glass (ME, 97) - first-year letterman
Kent Murphy (CE, 97) - first-year letterman
Play ing on the junior varsity team were brothers John Tomic
(ChE, 96) and Nick Rudd (EE, 96).
Freshmen pledges Benj Glass and Kent Murphy were big
contributors to a very young Engineer team. Murphy, a 6’9” cen-
ter was a dominant force inside while Glass, a 6’4” guard, was
one of the team leaders in scoring and three-pointers. Glass also
set a school record for steals in a game (8) against Earlham Col-
lege on December 15, earning him the title “Super-Frosh.” The
previous record was held by another Rho Phi brother, Scott
Beach (EE, 93), who had seven steals against Franklin College
during the 1991-92 season.
2 Wrestling
The Rose-Hulman wrestling team was very competitive this
year, thanks to several FIJIs.
Juniors Joe Labbe and Jim Labbe were the team’s most win-
ningest grapplers, combining for a record of 35-29 in their
matches.
Joe Labbe (ME, 95) competed in the 134-pound weight class
and finished with a record of 15-16. He placed fifth in both the
Spartan Classic and the Little State Tournament.
Jim Labbe (ME, 95) wrestled in the 142-pound weight class
and finished with a record of 20-13. He placed third at the Spar-
tan Classic and won all his matches at both the Monon Bell Clas-
sic and the Greyhound Classic.
Other FIJIs participating on the wrestling team were: Stuart
Quay (Fr., 190 Ib, 3-3) and Andy Horton (Fr., 158 Ib.).
¢ Baseball ¢
The 1994 Rose-Hulman baseball team is looking to return to
the NCAA Division III tournament after missing it last year.
Five FIJIs are on the 1994 roster, three of which are fresh-
man.
The only FIJI letterman returning for the 1994 season is
pitcher Shaun Miller (ChE, 95) who had a 1-0 record and 2.60
ERA in 1993.
Also returning to the junior varsity squad is pitcher Steve
Ruble (CE, 96).
Three FIJI pledges are on the team, two of which are on the
varsity squad. Varsity pledges are Jason Castor and Nate
Warfel, while Craig Holder sees action on the JV squad.
* Track & Field *
The Rose-Hulman track and field team has been blessed once
again with the presence of several FIJI members.
Among these members are brother Brady Neukam (EE, 94)
who has been a consistent performer throughout his collegiate
career.
Probably the biggest FIJI contribution has come from pole
vaulter Mike Brown (ME, 95) who has competed at the NCAA
national meet in the two years he has been able to compete. He
vaulted to a height of 16°3 3/4” in the Division III Indoor Track
& Field Championships on March 11-12. This was good enough
to place him fourth, and the vault also represented his personal
best and a school record.
Other FIJI team members include: Shannon Roerich (ME,
95) and pledges Brice Clark and Andy Herbert.
Scrambling for a loose ball against Wabash College are FIJIs Mike
Lawrence (33) and Kent Murphy (53).

om the Purple Legionnairee Spring 94 Pag
Dear Brothers,
Spring is quickly approaching. Winter coats are
being put in the closet until next fall. Shorts and tank
tops will soon be out. For some, thoughts are turning
to summer, and for others, graduation and the begin-
ning of a career. This is a time when students make
important decisions. What job should I take? Where
will I live? Should I get married? Do I have enough
money for school next year? Should I go back to
school?
Ata time when so much is riding on one’s mind, it
is important to remember
how Phi Gamma _ Delta
can help. Brothers can
provide a vast number of
opportunities for each
other. Whether it’s just a
brother to talk to and get
an opinion or a graduate
who'might provide a job.
Endless possibilities and
opportunities are within
reach if you network.
Network. What is a
network and networking? The idea and principle of a
network and networking is simple and the act of doing
it is easy. What makes it difficult is the fear and lack
of confidence in yourself. A network is a group or
combination of groups of ideas, people, and places - a
system almost like a business. Networking is present-
ing your goals, ambitions, desires, and yourself in a
professional manner to others. It is making contacts.
In its purest form, it is making friends and associates
through communication.
In today’s business, marked with faxes, high speed
computers, car phones, and other high-tech electron-
ics, the single most important aspect is communica-
tion. Without communication, business comes to a
standstill. Today’s standards require communication
between others.
Where does communication start? It starts with
confidence in yourself. If you are confident with your-
self and present yourself in a polite, professional, ethi-

cal, and succinct manner, people can do and will want
to communicate and relate with you.
Communication is a two way street. Not only do
you present yourself to others, but also you have to be
receptive of others trying to communicate to you. As
improvement in communication develops, knowledge
increases and respect for and of others begins.
When I became P.L. for this chapter, I realized
there was a lack of communication on all levels. It was
lacking between the chapter and the cabinet, between
the actives and the pledges, and especially between
undergraduates and grad-
uates. Over the past year I
have been instilling the
members to open avenues
communication and
how to grasp opportuni-
ties. As communication
improves, so does the tone
of the chapter as well as
the confidence and _pre-
sentation of the chapter
and its members.
Phi Gamma Delta pre-
sents an excellent atmosphere and opportunity for the
members to learn how to communicate and present
themselves to become respectable gentlemen. How-
ever, it is up to each member to realize this and
actively take part in order to benefit. Chapter functions
help to develop members into gentlemen and over-
come fear. Remember, there is nothing to fear but fear
itself. You can accomplish anything if you believe and
are confident in yourself and are not afraid of either
failure or success. Forever proud and confident to be a
FIJI!
Fraternal ly,
Mark Boenke
