Zeta Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta
Summer Edition
Letter from the editors:
For myself, Bill Keedy, this is the second semester as the editor of the Hoosier Fiji. To
be honest, 1 was happy with the results of how the winter edition turned out. However, the
other editors and I felt that many of the articles published were repetitive and centered too
much around the undergraduates of Zeta. We wanted to create a revised format that would be
more interesting and exciting for the graduate brothers. Upon talking to our field secretary,
Doug Draper (Kansas), we have made extreme efforts to focus more on you, the graduates.
We wish to thank all that who responded to the mailing sent out in April. Reading your
letters has been both interesting and enjoyable. Without your responses, this publication
would not be a success. For the brothers who chose not to respond, we encourage you to
please respond to future mailings. This is an excellent way for you to keep the brothers
informed. Remember, Phi Gamma Delta is "not for college days alone!"

In memory of Harold H. Burch
On October 7, 1993, Brother Harold H. Burch ('30) passed away. Harold was 84 years old and was
nearing his 60th wedding anniversary with his wife Dorothy Thompson. The two have lived most of their
married life in Evansville, where Harold worked at the family business, Burch Plow Works. Both he and
his wife spent much of their later years visiting their three children and the grandchildren, who are now
dispersed throughout the country. Harold was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa business honorary
fraternity during his undergraduate years and was heavily involved in several service organizations proceeding his time at Beechwood. His twin brother Gerald J. Burch (Zeta '30), still resides in Evansville.

George Moses Ginn was a friend, a brother and especially a Zeta Fiji pledgesbrother df mine - Class of 1957. Many, many called George a friend. All
of his friends would want him remembered for his good nature, ^able manner, ipfectious laugh, his sincere interest in and thoughtfulness toward
others, as well as his willingness to help lead in good causes. He was consistent in those virtues.
Those who knew him in a personal way knew also what a great hu.sband and father he was to his family. Those who worked with him recognized his
professional competence. George exceeded in many areas but none more than in athletic competition. He loved the games and the competitive
challenge. He was a skilled tennis player and golfer. Harlier he was a multi-sf>drt football, basketball, baseball and tennis star athlete for the
Frankfort, Indiana "Hot Dogs." As a freshman, he won his numerals pllying I.U. ba^feetball. In all of his endeavors, he was easy going, easy to meet
and easy to become a friend of; but he was never easy to beat.
George Ginn was also a remarkable Fiji brother. From his first days as a pledge at Beechwood to his last, he was dedicated and devoted to Phi Gamma
Delta. He believed in its precepts; he worked diligently solvingprbblemsjtoeatirig dfportunities, serving the local chapter and the national fraternity
whenever he was asked to do so. Most of all, George believed in arid Iiyed?his brotherhood. His accomplishments in both business and the fraternity
are legend and I know are well documented. Many brothers of Phi Gamma Delta owe Brother Ginn a great debt of gratitude.
To a very special few Phi Gams, George was a Zeta pledge brother - Claris of 1957. I suspect it is at least a Zeta tradition that being a pledge brother
connotes a special relationship among the classmates, I know that isTrue for the Glass of'57. From our very first days at I.U., George was first among
equals. Not only was he easy to get to know, he as hard to miss. He was a jolly giant; at least a head taller than most of us. His reputation as a star
athlete and student leader was one we all respected. It was natural that he became the president of the pledge class. With a middle name of Moses,
you'd just expect him to be a leader, and he was throughout our college days. We were all proud he was president of the house as a senior.
George was gifted not only with size and physical abilities, but leadership skills as well. George always seemed to be in touch and on top of the ever
changing situations. His balance, versatility and common sense always made sense to the rest of us. You could count on him to do the right thing at
the right time. Even though he seemed a little tough on some of the pledge brothers when he was enforcing study hqurs or drinking fines. At least the
ones fined thought so!
>
He could stay calm in a crisis. No matter what the problem or calamity — and there were more than a few -- he kept a steady hand on the wheel and
steered a proper course. He gave us all a sense of confidence not only in him but for each other and the fraternity.
George was also a lot offun. A grriat laugh and good sense of humor made him fun to be with,to double date with and to room with, as I did. He could
party as well as anybody. He was one of the few brothers that could put away a case of beer, personally, in a day. Maybe that's why, later in life, George
abstained from drinking altogether.

In 1956,1 think it was, George and a few other brothers drove a new school bus built in Richmond, Indiana to Florida for spring vacation. The bus was
scheduled to be delivered in Jacksonville, (Florida) but the trip ended instead in Lumber City. Georgia because the bus engine had a cracked block.
The engine failure, it was explained, was due to a faulty governor. Ft. Lauderdaie's reputations as a college party town no doubt got some of its color
from George and the Fiji classes of 56, '57 and '58.
As my roommate our sophomore year, we shared a lot of feelings, thoughts, stories and concem.s. We also competed with each other in the very best
sense of the word, 1 thought. We both pushed ourselves to be the best we could be in whatever we did from games to girls, to singing and grades. We
were both better for it. And. our friendship went beyond college days.
Uniquely, I recall George writing me a lettertwhen I was in the Army at Ft. Sil},:Oklahoma. ttdyttotelie had found "Pudge", his wife-to-be and that
importantly he had found "one fopjmelT I repiie^'that that was soirie chOdsingl^ddither do for myMf! After fixing me up with a blind date, that "one
for me" turned out to be Sally-my ;wifefbr some!^ years now. ||'ge dwaysatesplSrid George's goodtaste andvgppdjudgment in women and most other

Well, as starters, it wasn't planned that OX became a Fiji, but I'm sure
glad it worked out this way. I have twelve brothers who 1 lived with
at Beechwood who have sons now sharing brotherhood at Zeta (five
of which were Pledge brothers).
There's certainly great pleasure in revisiting the relationships and
memories with these brothers. But,the greatestjoy is for a dad to see
his son have similar friendships develop with his own Fiji brothers.
To know he will not only experience the crazy times at the house, but
the knowledge that the bond with each brother will last for a lifetime
and become more cherished as the years go by, is always in your
mind.
To this day, ray best friends and the "people I can count on" are my
Fiji brothers. I truly believe that this brotherly commitment is rooted
in the day to day experiences of pledgeship. Where each of us dis
covered at I.U. that our high school stature didn't mean much and
this self-centered attitude in life doesn't matter. We learned through
pledgeship and experienced as brothers, that loving and caring for
others has greater rewards, joys and satisfaction than all the perceived
self-gratifications of life.

Phi Gam's Ovm Legendary Author of
Raintree County
After reading Francis E. Wylie's ('28) letter, the editors of
the Hoosier Fiji did a little investigating into the story be
hind brother Ross Lockridge, Jr. We found an article in the
'57-'58 Zeta scrapbook about the world premiere of the
movie "Raintree Country." Starring in the movie was none
other than Elizabeth Taylor. One critic wrote about the
movie, which had been shelved for several years before com
ing into reality,..."It was well worth the waiting for. What I
saw held my interest unflaggingly." According to the ar
ticle, the movie encompasses only a small section of what
the classic novel presents to the reader. The 1,060 page
book, hosting 300,000 words, attempted to paint the life of
the republic thru the life of one man. The title of the book
derived its name from the golden raintree brought to Indi
ana, supposedly from the orient, early in the 19th century.
The legend of the raintree is the age-old tale of man's quest
for the unattainable. "Luck, happiness, the realization of
dreams, the secret of life itself - all belong to him who finds
the raintree." Brother Lockridge, Jr. passed away at the age
of 33. The raintree blooms in the early weeks of June and
can be found in the southwest part of Indiana.

The forty-fourth annual Little 500 was again another successtui year tor Phi Gamma

both on and off the track. Jack "Huck" Clemens, Dave "Drago" Harstad, Cory

Absent from riding In his second race was senior Bob "Pope" Keedy, who was
unable to ride because of an accident he suffered in a road race six weeks prior
to the race. In the best interest of the bike team they used only three of their
healthy riders, and ended up finishing a strong sixth. The bike team also narrowed
the gap with Phi Kappa Psi for cumulative Little 500 points. Phi Gamma Delta Is
currently In second place. Not only was FIJI'S presence noticed on the track, but
off the track as well. The house was awarded the Howdy Wllcox Spirit Award for
having the most brothers out supporting the bike team from the time that the
track opened in late March until the end of the race on Saturday. With three
riders returning for next year's race, it appears that FIJI will again show it's strength.
