As a Freshman of Zeta last year, my interest in Little 500 was sparked during my first witnessing of the
race. It led me to become invoIved as one ofthe coaches of the bike team this year. I can remember wondering
last year what it would feel like for our house to win the Borg Wbmer trophy. I met Mark
M.D. (
Flipper
一Senese,
87) last y?ar arOund race time through my brother Pat, Who was then the bike team coach. I found
out that the mam reaSOn Flipper was at the house was to help prepare the bike team for the race. I also
leamed that he was on the bike when the house last crossed the finish line and won the L批Ie 500 in 1987. He
is now a fourth year surgery resident, SPeCializing in orthopedics in Columbus, Ohio. He continues to coach
FIJI bike teams throughout the year and on race day. I called him earlier this year to ask him to write al)Out
wiming the race in 1987, a tremendous year for the Zeta chapter. He took time out of his schedule to write
about this proud moment in house history. Instead of summarizing his letteちI fdt the brothers of Zeta

brothers and suggestions for Chapter improvement. We have already set up a Cabinet Retreat for the
beginning ofJanuary; and we are planning a Chapter Retreat for the Spring Semester. We have been
very impressed with the Brothers‑ willingness to reinstate some lost Chapter traditions and accept
new changes as well・ We are expecting the next year to be both successful and prosperous for the
Brothers of Zeta Chapter, and we hope to bring home the coveted Cheney Cup from Lexington in
August.

Education Foundation for the new computer facility Many
thanks to Brother Bud Mangels (

Moheban ('84) for their hard work and dedication to ensur‑
ing the success of the pr(蒔ct. The facility has nine new
PC‑s, a laser printer; and a new copy machine. This facility
stands alone above any other bouse on campus. The broth‑
ers are thankful and the facility is in constant use. With‑
out the help of graduate brothers, this facility would not
exist. Thanks agam, and the bro比ers would like to invite
a11 graduates to come and see our new facility!

\r\nThe Pledge Class of 1998
The piedge cIass of 1 998 aspires to continue the Zeta Chapteris excelience a川diana University,丁he cIass
aspirations are to
further increase the exce=ence of Zeta冊Ough a total class eff面The ciass of 27 individuais has the capab帥ty of contributing greatIy to
Zeta‑s cause due to their exce=ent unity, This tighトknit group of a= freshman hope to fu軸er their unity by being initiated as a whoIe cIass.
However, the contributions of the cIass are no=o be constrained soieIy to unity. We wan=o span a= facets of the co=ege
SPe叫um of possib冊es and exceI where our individuai and group strengths may iie・ These contributions aiready inciude exce=ence in
academics,鴫hot only aspi「e to両申ed軸砧§s grades, but a「So assist Zeta in yet another year of academic prowess. Ph=anthropy is
One area Which is indicative of the drive for exce=ence we have as a ciass. Ourciass pIayed an integrai roie in Phi Gamma Deita leading
the campus in phiIanthropic hours. AthIetics have aiso been an area of exce=ence. We have pa軸pated in intramuraI, CIub and varsfty
athIetics. Our ciass shows strong potentiaI for Ieadership. in fact, members of the class have already begun servjng in key leaderhsip
POSitions in both house and campus ac廟ties.
The experiences at Beechwood during this first semester have established the foundations for the future, and in the next three
years the 1998 pIedge cIass w冊e bu圃ng upon these experiences in their search for exce=ence. However, this exceilence w冊Ot be
COnfined to four years but言nstead, W旧ast a lifetime.
