ALPHA NU WINS CHERRY SILVER CUP
TWO YEARS IN A ROW
The Cherry Silver Cup was established in 1993 by the UNM

Homecoming Week. In 1993, the Alpha Nu chapter edged

With another strong showing by Phi Gamma Delta in 1994,
the Cherry Silver Cup retained its spot on the mantel at 1801

The 1994 Homecoming competition consisted of three com
ponents. First, we had the necessary participationof broth
ers at Games Day. Next, brother Billy Widner demonstrated
his vocal prowess by winning second place in the Lobo Howl
contest. He should have taken first but was probably penal
ized for howling so loud that he broke the public announce
ment system! Finally, brother Tom Rice ('95) created a ex
tensive homecoming display around the chapter hou.se that
lit up the Albuquerque sky. Despite a strong showing by our
competition. Pi Beta Phi, Alpha Nu emerged victorious in
the illumination contest for the second year in a row and
thus earning the chapter the Cherry Silver Cup once again.
Utes finished 10 and 2 and defeated Arizona in the Inde-
fjendence Bowl. Despite this year's losing record, look for
New Mexico to be a contender next year in the expanded
Western Athletic Conference.

From The Editor
Hello Brothers, my name is Matt Jack
son and I am going to be working
along with the Graduate Relations
committee to try to improve commu
nication between the undergraduate
chapter and the graduates. The class
captains listed below are graduates
who have agreed to help us bridge the
gap of communication by acting as a
link between the chapter and you. You
will hopefully recognize a name in the
list and we encourage you to call up
these brothers and let them know what
you are doing. If you would like to
The Fraternity Award of Excellence was recently established to recognize any fra
ternity that meets a set predetermined criterion in all areas of chapter operations. Phi
Gamma Delta was one of only two fraternities to win this award, the other being
Kappa Sigma. The chapter is extremely proud of this honor, however, the most
importantaward won by Phi Gamma Delta was the highly coveted President's Cup.
The President's Cup is awarded annually to the University of New Mexico frater
nityjudged to be "most out.standing" in all aspects of fraternity life from.scholarship
and community service to graduate relations and new member education. This was
the fourth time in five years that Alpha Nu has won the award. It is interesting to
note that the President's Cup was stolen from the chapter hou.se last year and had to
be replaced. While it is unfortunate that a piece of UNM fraternity history has been
lost, we are proud of the new President's Cup and the history that it tells. The in
scriptions begin with the 1990 winner (Phi Gamma Delta) and follow: 1991 Phi
Gamma Delta, 1992 Kappa Sigma, 1993 Phi Gamma Delta, and 1994 Phi Gamma
Delta. As the chapter continues to excel and with continued persistence, the brothers
of Phi Gamma Delta hope to continue this standard of excellence for the rest of the
1990s and beyond.

SCHOOL, FRATERNITY, SELF
Our continuing quest to maintain a high standard
of scholarship was evidenced by Alpha Nu this
past year. In the Spring of 1994, we achieved the
highest active, pledge, and overall grade point
averages of any of the 10 fraternities at UNM.
Scholarship has long been a high priority for the
Fijis, but thanks to brother Rey Brannen ('95) it
now carries a cash incentive. During his term as
the Interfraternity Council Scholarship Chairman,
Rey introduced a motion that allocates funds in
the amount of $1.00 per man in the Greek sys
tem to be given to the chapter with the highest
overall scholastic index. Last spring Alpha Nu
became the first beneficiary of this incentive pro
gram, winning over $400. Officially, however,
brother Brannen claims that he had only the pur
est of motives in suggesting the establishment of
this incentive.

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
As we close the year out. Alpha Nu looks forward to
another successful year. Over the past year we once
again won the UNM President's Cup for the most
outstanding fraternity on campus. As the chapter has
been in another upswing, financially and in number
of new members, we are hopeful that once again the
University will recognize us for our outstanding
achievements.
I am personally looking forward to grooming several
new leaders in the chapter. The membership has tre
mendous potential, and if utilized properly, will bring
our chapter to the next "level." Also, I hope to in
crease participation in fraternity functions over the
coming year. Not only active members, but graduate
brothers as well. Phi Gamma Delta will always be a
part of all of us. Becoming a Phi Gam will always be
one of the most important things each of us have ever
done and to lose touch with the fraternity is a great

This year Alpha Nu pledged 20 men during its
Fall rush. Due to our always exacting standards
of membership, this number is down to a persis
tent group of 15 men. The Fall 1994 pledge class
is led by Pledge Educator Sean Calocci ('94).
Our Fall 1994 pledges and their hometowns are
as follows: Ed Dondin, Verona, Italy; Arnold
Gallegos, Albuquerque (Albuquerque High); Jon
Gayer, Albuquerque (Del Norte); J.J. Hunter,
Albuquerque (Manzano); Sean Hurley; Jay Kim,

service started in the house. It will take a great deal
of money to get the kitchen refurbished and ready,
but we feel it is a worthwhile step to ensure that Phi
Gamma Delta continues to be the best fraternity in
New Mexico. I know from experience that if the chap
ter had meal service when I pledged, my parents
would have been more supportive of my decision to
join the fraternity and live in the chapter house. We
are hoping that more prospective members and their
parents will find it a benefit as well.
1hope to see you all the coming year and please plan
to attend the 29th Annual Norris Pig Dinner on April
29th.
