Hard Times are Over ~ Omicron Deuteron Shines
F. Ryan Memmelaar '96, Chapter President
Omicron Deuteron accomplished a lot this winter. In
the areas of rush, scholarship, brotherhood and fundraising, I can honestly say this is the most united I
have seen Fiji in a long time. We came together as a chapter to
overcome a potentially treacherous period. The hard times are
over, and we came through with flying colorsv

Gamma Delta's status on campus. This winter wedaave 10
pledges and hope to put through a double-digit spring cla.ss for
the first rime in years. The number and quality of men has
grown as has our status in the community.
Some said that scholarship was lacking at Omicron Deuteron.
In response to that criticism, we have installed a new scholarship
chairman with a renewed dedication to "hitting the books."
Quiet study time has increa.scd, and our grades are on the rise.
Dedication to community service, however, is as high as ever.
February's Queen of Hearts event rai.sed thousands of dollars
Due to recent financial problems, brothers were charged
with the responsibility ofraising extra funds. To accomplish
this, each brother worked on his own, but in cooperation with
team leaders, to raise money in order to meet our goal. I never
saw the brothers pull together stronger than we did during
those last tense weeks as we came down to the wire.'When we
finally met the goal, it just proved that Fijis working together
can accomplish anything.
We have faced the winter ofour discontent and came
through with flying colors. I owe an incredible debt of gratitude
to my cabinet, whose hard work made this arduous quarter just
a little easier. I also owe a special thanks to all of the graduate
brothers who offered their support these past few months. We
appreciate everything you've done.
Lessons will be learned from the winter of 1995 — lessons
that will no doubt make Phi Gamma Delta stronger for years to
come. I know it has made us, the undergraduate brothers,
proud to be Fijis.

With the advent ofthe new cabinet, the position of
committee coordinator was created to replace the
position of assistant treasurer. In this position, I will
be taking some of the pressure off the president so he can focus
on other issues. My position basically delegates projects to the
proper committees and oversees their progress. The purpose of
this system is to make the whole process more efficient and to
facilitate and improve communication among the committees.

the chapter, partly due to the effectiveness of Jeff Eade
'97, our scholarship head. Jeff contributed by putting
together a course book that lists exactly what classes everyone
was taking. In this way, brothers taking the same courses can
study together, and we can arrange for in-house tutoring when
nece.ssary. Jeff also surveyed the file cabinet and compiled a list
of which course notes are still needed to complete the files.
Now the undergraduates could really use some desk lamps and
bookshelves so lAGNAF can become a more effective study
environment.

as entertaining today as when they occurred (1959 and 1941-42) and when they were relayed to the house in 1977.
Ifyou have£reatstoriesform your undergraduate days, please send diem to usfor use in tlte newsletter. Mail your stories to our

From Robert B. L. Taylor '45
Friday night in our freshman year(1941-42),the pledge The winter of1959 was pretty cold(but obviously not as
class kidnapped an undergraduate brother from the
house (everyone else was out), took him to Westerville
and dumped him. Thinking it would take him forever to get
back, we decided to stop and have a beer.
The son-of-a-bitch got a ride back to the house. The
brothers who had been out were back by now and they alerted
the whole damn chapter.
The house was dark when wc retumcd. The basement
windows opened like gun turrets. After eggs, etc., were ex
changed, Tru John.son invaded the stronghold through the atric
window and ended up a hostage. We ran down the back stairs
and grabbed the fire hose and drenched the opposition. A truce
committee was set up at the front door to allow us to enter. We
apologized and told them to
off. The undergraduates were
proud of us for di.splaying great brotherhood and morale as a
pledge class.
bad as '77). One night one of the brothers brought his
compact car into the old dining room so it would start
the next morning because he had to be at work at 8 a.m. The
brother had had trouble getting the car started on other mornings.
The next morning a few of us helped him push the car out,
but during the night the car had expanded in the warm house
and it would not fit through the door. A carpenter was called in,
and he worked for half a day taking the door jambs off to get
the car out. Mom Nosher was very unhappy when she came
down to fix breakfast and found a car sitting in the middle of
the dining room!
