REPORT OF THE PURPLE LEGIONNAIRE
by
Jere W. Morehead (Ga. Faculty)
At the Officer Transition Retreat a few months ago, Kappa Deuteron's incoming and
outgoing officers formulated several important goals for 1995. Since that time, the
tmdergraduate brotherhood has evaluated these proposals and expressed its undivided support for
accomplishing at least three important tasks this year: 1) extending graduate involvement in
summer rush activities with a goal of returning undergraduate membership size to 90 brothers;
2) maintaining our status as the #1 fraternity in academic standing at UGA by introaucing several
new incentives for individual academic achievement by brothers; and 3) expanding our
community service outreach by adopting a local elementary school, Alps Road Elementary, and
sponsoring several events at the school this year. These three goals are well on the path to
completion.
First, we gained nine new pledges through winter rush, and we hope to recruit several
graduate brothers to assist the chapter in sponsoring summer rush programs. For the past two
years. Bill Bass has supported a very successful event for summer rushees in Atlanta, and we
would like to expand these rush efforts to other parts of the state.
Second, we maintained our #1 academic standing fall quarter with a 3.01 GPA and will
be introducing, at the beginning of spring quarter, several new programs to encourage brothers to
keep academics as their priority. Many doubted the chapter's ability to regain the top position on
this campus in academic achievement. Now that we have #1 again, we do not want to lose it.
Finally, the brothers already have spent several afternoons at Alps Road Elementary
upgrading the school's playground and will be involved later this spring in the school's Festival
and Field Day activities. Alpha Delta Pi Sorority will be working with us in these projects as
well. Several individual brothers also are planning to volunteer as Big Brothers at the school.
I am gratified by the commitment our chapter continues to show in the values that make
our chapter one that we can be proud to call our own. I look forward to visiting with you at Pig
Dinner in April!

A SUCCESSFUL WINTER RUSH
by
Scott Harris ('97) Rush Chairman
Phi Gamma Delta has just recently finished a successful Winter Rush with nine
pledges. Among these pledges are two varsity athletes, Maury Beasley ~ currently
playing in the #1 slot on the UGA golf team and Andy Griffin who is currently on the
swim team and has an outside shot at the Olympic Team in one event.
A goal was set for Winter Rush and that goal was met. Now is the time to move
ahead to Fall Rush where we have also set a goal to attain in order to bring the chapter
back to the level of membership it once had.
Fall Rush may seem far away, but our Spring and Summer rush events will be
coming up soon. Spring quarter is where we hope to make a big portion of our goal. We
hope to have a majority of our Fall pledges by the time the Summer Rush events have
come around. Graduates, please help us in any way that you can. It would be much
appreciated if you could turn in as many names to us as soon as possible so that we might
get the jump on some of the other fi-atemities. We are now working on planning Native
Weekend, and we have decided to bring a few deserving rushees to Jock Connell as well.
Our Summer Rush plans are being made and any assistance with the planned events
would also be appreciated. So let's all work together for a successful Fall Rush!

THE GAVEL REPORT
ALPS ROAD ELEMENTARY
by

Winter quarter has been a very busy one
for the brothers of Kappa Deuteron. With the
recent initiation of our fall pledge class
followed by winter rush, there has not been

much time to sit back and relax. Our Winter

Rush was a big success and much of the credit
goes to our Rush Chairmen Scott Harris and

Their hard work and
effort with the help of Mrs. Margie Shedd,
enthusiasm enabled us to pledge nine
outstanding individuals which makes this the
largest winter pledge class for our chapter in
recent years. Among these nine young men
are two varsity athletes and one legacy. In
building upon this winter rush success and the
abilities of our Rush Chairmen, the chapter has
wife of Brother Peter Shedd. Thus far, our
a goal of a 30 man fall pledge class. I
personally think this is a very attainable goal if
both the graduates and undergraduates will
work together to reach it.
In looking ahead to Spring Quarter, it
appears that we have a full calendar of events
including the Norris Pig Dinner on the
weekend of April 28-29. This weekend
promises to be an exciting time for the
graduates to venture back into Athens for
some fun times and just good 'ole "hanging out
with the brothers." Our Fig Dinner Chairman
Jeff Elrod has already begun planning the
activities for that weekend which will include
a dinner Saturday night in the main ballroom
of the Holiday Inn.
In addition,
the
dedication for the plaque containing the names
of all those brothers who donated money to the
house is tentatively set to take place in the
courtyard before dinner on Saturday. I am
looking forward to seeing all of you in Athens
on the 28th.

involvements have consisted of landscaping
the school's playground and common areas.
Plans for this spring, however, include our
participation in their Spring Festival, as well
as for the school's Olympic field Day.
By adopting Alps Elementary, Kappa
Deuteron has embarked on a wonderful new
relationship. Instead of a single fleeting event
during which the brothers' impact could only
be felt for those few hours, this new project
fosters a nurturing association between the
fraternity and the children of the school. In
addition to the manpower we provide for
improving the school's grounds, Fiji's and
ADPi's alike can serve as positive role models
by showing them the benefits of a continued
commitment to scholarship. Therefore, in this
new relationship. Kappa Deuteron hopes to
make a serious impact on the all important
education ofthe community's children
