The Chain
The Graduate Newsletter of Lambda Omega Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta
Volume 4, Number 2, November, 1995
THE OPENING WORD
I am pleased to welcome some new readers to this
publication. When 1 looked at the master list of
Fijis in Ontario, 1 added any Fijis living up to about
a two hour drive from London, Ontario. As my
hometown is Oshawa, Ontario, I also added the
Oshawa Fijis, including two (2) former teachers fi'om
my high school that I discovered, in my searches, are
fraternity brothers. This gave me fifty-nine (59) more
men on my address list. Brothers have been added
from the following chapters - Lambda Chapter at
Depauw, Pi Chapter at Allegheny, Theta Deuteron
Chapter at Ohio Wesleyan, Sigma Deuteron at
Lafayette, Alpha Phi Chapter at Michigan, Theta Psi at
Colgate, Nu Epsilon at New York, Gamma Deuteron
at Knox, Tau Kappa at Toronto, Pi Gamma at U.B.C.,
Mu Kappa from McGill, Alpha Gamma from General
Motors Institute, Epsilon Alpha from Alberta and
Upsilon Chi from Calgary.
Each of you is welcome to Lambda Omega - to share
our news, to contribute to the Chain, to attend our
Pig Dinner and to share the Lambda Omega brand of
brotherhood. I hope you find our news interesting
and informative. I also hope to meet you in London
at some point soon.
If, for some reason, you do not want to receive the
Chain, just drop me a line and I will take your name
off the mailing list. My name and address follow.
To the existing readers, thank you for the kind
comments I have received
by letter and phone about
the last edition. It seemed
to be a real crowd pleaser.
REFLECTIONS FROM THE PAST
There is no doubt that Phi Gamma Delta played a
vital role in my development during
undergraduate days and has continued in this
role since I graduated. While the fraternity
helped me to attain leadership and interpersonal
skills, its most enduring legacy upon me comes
from the friendships I made and have maintained
over the past several years. Although I now make
my home in Alberta, the memories of Phi Gamma
Delta, like the friendships, remain extremely
important to me.
It is ironic that the fratermity has meant so much
to me because I was initially hesitant about
joining. It took a great deal of convincing on the
part of my roommate. Brother Glen Farrow, to
even get me to a rush event. That first rush event,
though, was enough to convince me that I
belonged. I sensed that the brothers I met
respected each other and enjoyed spending time
together. The fraternity became my home away
from home; it made an otherwise large campus a
little more manageable.
It is difficult to elect any one moment as being
representative of my experience within the
fraternity. Initiation was one of those moments.
While I would not care to repeat the experience,
parts of the weekend stand out in a special way.
Although almost drunk from exhaustion, I can
still remember the pride I felt throughout the
initiation ceremony; pride in myself and pride
for
my
fellow
initiates
and
our
accomplishments together.
I hope you find this effort
I have the fraternity to thank , at least partly, for
as enjoyable.

Skirt in my third year. She had no real interest in
attending a "frat" party, but agreed to come, at the
urging of a friend who was also attending.
\r\nm
Needless to say, things worked out between Sheri
and myself. Her friend however, in the true spirit
of the "Skirt", ended up in the balloon room, but
not with the brother who brought her to the
party.
These are a few of the many memories that helped
reinforce that Phi Gamma Delta is "Not For College
Days Alone."

\r\nWe're alive and well and living in Calgary again.
We had been here for 4 1/2 years in the late eighties.
My career with Confederation Life ended after a
little more than 20 years on August 12, 1994.
Fortunately, our division (Group) was purchased by
Manualife and they kept me on and returned me to
Calgary last fall to oversee the group business in
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. We love
living here and Manualife is proving to be an
outstanding company to work for. I've enclosed a
copy of my business card for your directory. I'll
look forward to seeing the finished product. For
your records (and so that I can continue to receive
"the Chain"), my address at home is as follows: 125

I really got a big kick out of the newsletter. What
a fantastic job you've done with it! It was great
seeing the old guys look so young and to hear how
well they,ve made out along the way.
I still keep in touch with some of the guys
(Atkinson, Woods, Longworth) but most 1 haven't
seen or talked to in many years. I guess I'm not
much of a letter writer or phoner. Given my best
toward minimal communication, it's great to have a
vehicle like "the Chain" in order to feel connected
to the guys and all the good times we had.

at the same time, teaching Psychology at McMaster
University and, as well, cohabiting with a medical
student and significant other, Rohan. I'm anxious to
see how he fits all of this on one card. Maybe he can
give to or get a few tips from Franciscus Cornelius
Thaddeus Theodore Smeenk on time management
and survival on no sleep.
Well that's about all the news for now and I'm
going to stop. 1 have a writer's cramp, having not
written an actual letter by hand in some 20+ years.

from the very first colony meeting up to 1969. 1
now have these gems in the graduate archives and
wish to share some excerpts from these minutes
with you.
GRADUATE BUSINESS CARD
- Jamiai-y 3, 1966 - For the first time we followed the
DIRECTORY
ritual fully.
Yes, 1 am finally getting this directory done. I'm
making one last call tor business cards from
everyone, including those who already sent me
cards in the past. 1 will send you a directory on
request and some will be available at the Pig, tor
the costs of photocopying.
I am also working constantly on the master
directory. This has been completed tor a tew years
but, like any phone book, it is out-of-date as soon
as it is published. It you change your address or
know of any other brother who has moved, please
let me know. Your kind assistance will ensure that
you continue to receive the Chain. This will also
help defray our mailing costs. The directory will be
available tor the photocopying and mailing costs about $15 - after the Pig.
Report of Corr. Sec. - Christmas cards were sent out
to our 13 friends.
- March 15, 1966 - The meeting opened with the
ritual after a fashion. PL. N. Schuller had a little
difficulty at the door. Apparently he has some
difficulty counting to three. After a brief scuffle
with Bro. Cooper, Field Secretary Bro. Robert
McCulloch managed to gain entrance and Bro.
Keenleyside had some trouble with the small print
of the manual. Perhaps if we were to reprint it in
letters about the size of the lettering on the sign,
less confusion would occur for our guests if they
ever got the nerve to try another visit. Another
high point was a fine rendition of the doxology. We
were not able to convince Bro. McCulloch that
there is a special tune for the colony. He, in turn,
made a slighting remark about our vocal abilities.
PIG DINNER CLASS REUNIONS
The Pig Dinner would be an opportune occasion
tor graduating classes from 5, 10, 15 and 20 years
ago to get together to come back to the Pig, just as
the Silver Owl, 25-year guys are doing. 1 would ask
you to consider calling your other grad brothers to
- March 15, 1966 - Brother McCulloch suggested we
follow (for the pledge program) the 6p program Previous planning prevents piss poor programs.
- March 21, 1966 - The ceremony of initiation
followed. Four brothers were welcomed and
reminded of our informal motto - "May your bar
bill ever be high, that, on this principle, the Colony
remains solvent."
encourage them to come to London the first
weekend in February. Once 1 get my computer
problems sorted out, 1 will be able to help by
producing lists of the brothers in each category
and in different geographic areas. Unfortunately,
that will not happen tor the next Pig, so 1 am
hoping that someone out there will take the ball
and run with it by phoning pledge brothers and
organizing a Pig Dinner weekend reunion. 1 can
help with addresses and telephone numbers it you
contact me.
- February 19, 1968 - Bro. Magoo announced that
the 1st annual Bro. Magoo Birthday Party would be
held after the pledge ceremony. It was a little odd
because it was Bro. Young's birthday.
- March 18, 1968 - Purple Jesus Bar - Bro. Mills
outlined the total cost as being $79.02 and
therefore at 30 cents per chit, expenses will he met
adequately. He held Bill Scarrow with 29 chits and
John Campbell with 21 chits in high regard. He
also remarked that the party seemed to work out
better with a weaker punch as we had only 2 people
\r\nbite the dust this year. Everyone seemed to have a
good time although Stewart's date was not amused.
DOES THE CHAIN KNOW?
- October 7, 1968 - Bro. McMullen announced the

- Novetnber 11, 1968 - Bro. Scarrow suggested that
we take a couple of pledges for "a ride" to instill
some kind of unity and life into the pledge class. It
was decided that Pledge Mees and Pledge Brown he
taken to Thorndale.
P.S. We were able to capture Pledge Mees hut not
Pledge Brown. We took Mees to Strathroy because
Bro. Fellman couldn't find Thorndale. Later that

The chapter is strong despite the very negative
atmosphere on campus towards fraternities and the
constant struggle to recruit good men to carry on
the traditions.
