ALPHA NU WINS PRESIDENTS' CUP EGR
THIRD YEAR IN A ROW
FIVE OUT OF THE LAST SIX YEARS
1994 provided yet another opportunity for
Alpha Nu to participate in a near clean sweep of
this year's Greek Awards Banquet that was held
March 4th. Those fraternities that have achieved a
high status of excellence over the past year were
recognized at the banquet and the Fraternity of
Phi Gamma Delta was again more recognized that
any other.
Among the awards that our fraternity won
this year was the University's Presidents' Cup, the
award that goes to the best all-around chapter on
campus and the highest level of achievement that
can be acquired by a fraternity at U.N.M. This
marks the fifth time in six years that Alpha Nu has
received the Presidents' Cup, and the third year in
a row, making us the most winning fraternity of
the Nineties!
Other awards won by the chapter were the
I.F.C. Overall Scholarship trophy, the I.F.C. Pledge
Scholarship Awards for both the spring and fall of
'94, the I.F.C. Highest Initiated Member G.P.A.
Award, the I.F.C. Chapter Operations and Admin
istration Award, the All-Fraternity Greek Cup, and
the Award of Excellence for scoring over 85% of
the points possible on the President's Report. The
chapter also received second place in the large
group category of Greek Sing.
The evening was capped with the unveil
ing of our new greek letters on our Chapter House
during an exciting fireworks displays. We hope
you'll drop by and see our trophies and new let
ters at the Pig Dinner April 29th.
The members of Alpha Nu feel that they
have risen to a new plane of excellencewithin the
fraternity system and this year's award banquet
has proven the feeling true. We intend to con
tinue this trademark of achievement into the fu
ture and keep our chapter the best in the South
west.

FromThe Editor
Brothers,
Well, I know it is hard to believe that we have
sent out two newsletters in one semester, but hopefully
this will be sign of things to come. The undergraduate
chapter is bursting with energy and we all are inter
ested in keeping up the communication between the
graduates and the undergraduates. I am pleased to an
nounce a new aspect of communication and graduate
support in the fraternity. Several graduate brothers are
setting up an Electronic Board of Chapter Advisors.
The E-BCA will be holding monthly conference calls
and other forms of communication so graduate broth
ers in all parts of the country will be able to advise the
local chapter and work with committee heads and cabi
net members on projects. In fact, both newsletters this
semester were made possible by individual contribu
tions from the founders of the E-BCA. The chapter is
excited about this E-BCA and hopes that this will give
graduates a direct link to ourchapter no matter where
they are. If you are interested in being a part in what
will likely be the first E-BCA in FIJI land please con
tact me at (505) 272-9694.
Thank you to the graduates that have written
to me regarding our last newsletter, namely Brother
Jeff D. Harris ('69) and Brother H.V. Hopkins (Ari
zona '44). It is always great to hear from you, our
graduates. I would also like to thank the brothers in

ALPHA NU NEWS BRIEFS
Alpha Nu recently received a new Purple Le
gionnaire. Brother John Benavidez, who graduated in
May '94, has agreed to take on the position on an in
terim basis until the position can be filled permanently.
The chapter appreciates John's constant commitment
to the fraternity and are eager to have his help in our
continued climb to excellence.
Along with Alpha Nu receiving a new P.L., we
have a new section chief. Brother Jeff Garrett (Mis
souri '90), who resides in Denver, Colorado and is the
Manager of Media Relations for US WEST Communi
cations, will now be advising the chapter and working
with us to maintain the level of excellence that we have
achieved. The chapter is happy about this change and
looksforward to many great years to comewithBrother
Garrett's help.
The fraternity also has been changing on an
International level. There are now two undergraduate
archons. The first in FIJI history is Brother Kevin
Barnnett, who currently is pursuing a degree in premedicine from Texas Christian University and will
graduate this May. Kevin plans on attending one of
many medical schools that he has been accepted to.

Greetings,
As the new Treasurer of Alpha Nu, I came in
intending to make some changes, and I am happy to
report that I have been successful so far. Due to the
proficient payment by the majority of the brothers in
the house and the help of Brother Tom Joule ('69), we
have been able to have carpet laid in nearly all of the
new section of the chapter house. In addition, carpet
has been replaced in the upstairs old section, and is
scheduled to be laid in the downstairs old section soon.

As for other improvements, the ceiling tiles in the front com
mon areas have been removed, and the ceiling has been tex
tured and painted. Also, phone lines and cable lines are soon
going to be run to each and every room separately, so that the
"wire jungle" that we have now in the hallways and court
yard will be a thing of the past.

As for our financial status with International Head
quarters, all is well. The large debt that has plagued us for
years is now gone, and we are hoping to maintain a positive
financial image with headquarters, in hopes that we may be
considered one of the best, if not the best chapter of Phi
Gamma Delta, as we all know we should.

Wilmington, MA.
Jeff Thompson ('93) has been promotedfrom FieldSecretary to
Director of Chapter Services at Headquarters in Lexington, KY.
Congratulations J.T.I. All of us at Alpha Nu are proud of your
continued success.
And just in case you need to get out of a ticket or file for bank
ruptcy, we thought we would include several graduate brothers
who are currently practicing law in Albuquerque:
Kevin J. Hanratty 262-0876
Richard L. Puglisi 242-2177
Alfred Sanchez 242-1979
Steve S. Taylor 242-3441
Paul T. Yarbrough 884-0777
standing fraternity at the University of New
Mexico.
Our continued success in all areas can
definitely be attributed to a strong foundation
created by the successes by the graduates of
the Alpha Nu chapter. Now, the men of Phi
Gamma Delta intend to take this chapter far
beyond the awards of the university and into
the upper echelon of our international frater
nity.
We intend to take this next step by in
creasing graduate relations and participation in
chapter functions. Through the support of the
graduates, the Alpha Nu chapter can become
one of the most prominent chapters on the con
tinent. Currently, there are only a handful of
graduates that continue to support and involve
themselves in this, their chapter. The chapter
is not asking for donations (nor denying them
of course), we simply would like to see that
the graduates of the Alpha Nu chapter continue
to have an underlying love for their fraternity.
This chapter is, by no means, in financial or
legal trouble and that should not be the only
time the graduates feel obligated to be involved.
Fm sure at one point, when you too were "ac
tive" members, somebody said to you, "You
get out of it what you put in to it." This state
ment holds true regardless of whether you are
an undergraduate or graduate brother. The
sense of pride we each felt when Phi Gamma
Delta was named the most outstanding frater
nity at U.N.M. is something that we will all
remember forever and we would like you to
share in the successes of your fraternity. If you
can, please attend this year's Pig Dinner and
support our chapter.
Fraternally,
Brad Hennington
