The Gamma Tau Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta
SUMMER 1995
Gamma Tau Remembers Charlie Brown
Charles Manley Brown (FT '25), known to all as Charlie
Brown, died Friday, May 19, 1995, at the age of 92. He was one
of Gamma Tau's most distinguished members and gave inspira
tion and support to the chapter for over 70 years. According to
his wishes he was buried wearing his recognition ring. Charlie's
r
love for Phi Gamma Delta and for Gamma Tau truly had no
bounds, and throughout his distinguished service to the city of
Atlanta, he always remained close to his chapter. He will be
sorely missed.
He was born in Birmingham, Alabama on November 20,
1902, and moved to Atlanta with his mother in 1904. He
graduated from Georgia Tech in 1925, where he was a member
of the ANAK society, in addition to being a founding member of
the Gamma Tau Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta. He attended his
sixty-ninth consecutive Gamma Tau Pig Dinner on April 22 of
this year.
He worked over forty years in Atlanta politics as a Fulton
County Comissioner and a Georgia State Senator before retiring
in 1979. He did a great deal for the city of Atlanta and Fultton
County during his career including the development of Charlie
Brown Airport, MARTA, Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, and
accomplishments, Charlie Brown was also the President of
Fickett Manufacturing Company, and in 1982, he published his
memoirs, Charlie Brown Remembers Atlanta. He also served as
deacon for forty-two years at Cascade Baptist Church and, later,
at Beecher Hills Baptist Church.
Charlie was married for sixty-six years to Elsie Anderson,
who passed away in 1993. His funeral was held on May 22 at
Patterson's Spring Hill Chapel in Atlanta, and he was buried at
Westview Cemetery.

From The President...
Clough Inaugurated as
State of the Chapter
GT's 10th President
Every year following Greek Week, IFC holds its annual
awards banquet, and every year we attend to receive our share of
honors. This year, though, the honors went a little further than
any hardware, for we also received some recognition and com
pliments from one of the most respected men in the history of
Georgia Tech's greek life—Dean Dull himself. While awarding
us third place in the overall competition for the most oustanding
fraternity. Dean Dull took a few minutes to recognize not only
our accomplishments this year but also those of the last five

take Dean Dull's personal accolades over his trophy.
Looking back over this quarter, it looks like the upcoming
year is bound to bring even better things to Gamma Tau. As
already mentioned, we won Greek Week again this year, but we
also had an outstanding Pig Dinner and a safe and enjoyable
Island Party. On top of that, we have stepped up our Summer

until noon on Friday to give students the opportunity to attend
the inauguration ceremony.
In Dr. Clough's inaugural address, he outlined his vision as
to how Georgia Tech will meet the challenges of a rapidly

other weekend over the summer in an effort to gain 10 pledges the recently developed vision statement for the Institute, and
by Fall Rush, a total of 30 to 35 pledges in all. This, be assured, outlined how Tech can achieve its vision. In closing, he stated

The Robert G. Edwards Memorial Library
Now that construction on the addition is finally complete. Gamma Tau is working on improving the facilities within the house.
One of the most exciting projects is the conversion ofthe old "Tube Room" into a study library complete with computer facilities.
The funding for the library was provided by a generous donation from the estate of Robert G. Edwards (FT '44) to the Phi Gamma
Delta Educational Foundation.
Plans for the library began several months ago, and renovation should be complete by September 15th. Brother Wayne Olander
(Kansas '71), the new Gamma Tau Section Chief, is the architect for the library and has been instrumental in its progress.
The plans for the library include a complete renovation of the room and the installation of computer facilities. The room will
be a chapter library containing shelves ot books and a quiet study area for brothers and pledges. The library will also contain three
computers for use by the brothers. These computers will be invaluableto the many brothers in the house whodo not owncomputers
to aid them with their studies. We plan to network these computers so that brothers throughout the house can connect to the library
computers.
This library will be an enormous asset to Gamma Tau, assisting each member of the chapter in attaining his own scholarly goals
and therefore benefiting the entire chapter. It will also be an enormous asset for Fall Rush this year and in future years. The
undergraduate brothers look forward to its completion.

of social service. As with every Phi Gam endeavor, continued
excellence is our goal. For three nights during winter quarter,
brothers and pledges tended to over 50 homeless men in down
town Atlanta at the Central Night Shelter. The brothers and
pledges helped the shelter set up cots and tables, serve dinner
and clean up the followig morning. During spring quarter, the
chapter participated in the annual Greek Week philanthropy
project. Brothers of Gamma Tau worked with members of other
Tech fraternities and sororities to improve several public parks
in Atlanta. The summer has seen Gamma Tau forge an exciting
relationship with the Rainbows Foundation. They are a national
group who focuses on the recovery of grieving children. Cur
rently, the chapter is helping to plan the Rainbows Foundation's
annual "Day in the Park" celebration at Grant Park in Atlanta.
The "Day in the Park" will include clowns, crafts that the
children can make, and a picnic. Last year, over 350 children
attended. The chapter has great hopes for continued relations
with Rainbows by making the "Day in the Park" an annual event
For Gamma Tau. The chapter will continue striving for excel
lence in philanthropy as it moves into a new school year.
Having completed the construction in March 1995,
Gamma Tau hosted its 1995 Pig Dinner in the new house
addition. Pig Dinner gave brothers the opportunity to see the
result of generous donations and countless hours of work.
Not only will the chapter use the addition for larger events.
Gamma Tau plans to make the addition the focal point of its
brothers' and pledges' daily recreational and socializing
time.
To achieve its goal of making the addition a recreational
room, the chapter has a several stage plan to furnish the
addition. The Gamma Tau House Corporation has provided
the chapter with money to purchase furniture that will make
the room functional. With the money provided by the House
Corporation, the chapter bought a pool table and a card table.
Before fall rush, the chapter will buy blinds for the windows
and carpeting for part of the room on which to put the
couches and television that it already owns. During fall
quarter, the chapter hopes to purchase a coffee table and two
end tables. When it completes furnishing the addition, the
chapter looks forward to a room in which all brothers and
pledges can socialize.

SUMMER 1995
GAMMA TAUK
1995 Rush
Gamma Tau has initiated exciting Summer Rush program as a result of many changes on campus. Not only do most of the large
fraternities on campus already have extensive summer rush programs in place, several new fraternity houses will soon be completed
"in our neck of the woods." As a result, 1995 Fall Rush will be more competitive than ever.
To meet this impending challenge, we have planned a busy summer rush with events such as golf and barbecue, rafting trips,
a Softball game, a camping trip, a pool party, and more. We also plan to have several "informal" events such as going to Braves'
games, golfing, etc.
If you have any suggestions for Summer or Fall Rush or are able to donate anything that would be helpful to Rush (e.g.
Braves Tickets, golf passes, prizes for "Casino Night," etc.), please contact one of Gamma Tau's Rush Chairmen: Bryan
Robinson (892-6569) or Bruce Johnson (898-0692). More importantly, if you can recommend any incoming freshman that
you think would be interested in Gamma Tau, please fill out the form below and send it to the house or call one of the rush
chairmen. Thank you for you continued support. The chapter is looking forward to our best rush ever.
