REFLECTIONS FROM THE PAST
My Recollections of the 1971-72 Year at Lambda Omega
THE OPENING WORD
Many exciting events have taken place at Lambda The Lambda Omega year of 1971-72 began early for
Omega since the last Chain was sent to you. In
addition to many good things such as a great
1996 Pig Dinner and births of children (not at the Pig), the
undergraduate chapter suffered the loss of an active brother,
Dan Horowitz, in a car accident in which four other brothers
me with participation for 3 days at the Fiji Academy in
Bloomington, Indiana in mid-August and a huge
turnout of brothers among the celebrants at Greg Stoddart's
wedding at the end of that month.
were involved and injured. There is an article about this
brother included later in this issue.
The future holds many things for Lambda Omega - the
Ekklesia this summer, back to school in the fall, Homecoming
in October, Christmas, then the 1997 Pig. I feel that I'm
getting ahead of myself! So, let's look at the past six months. I
hope you enjoy this effort. Please keep in touch with me to
fuel the news I need to propel this, your newsletter. You can

627 was filled to capacity from the beginning of term with
the stacking of 3 occupants to a room in some cases, such as
mine. As a resident of the house for 2 years I always felt much
more in the centre of all fraternity activities than the brothers
who lived elsewhere and it served as a convenient base for
my activities as Rush Chairman both that fall and spring.
Rush events in the fall included such diverse activities as a
Monte Carlo night, a film night, a dart tournament and a
rollicking pub tour to the Shillelagh Hotel in Lucan. But I think
the most enjoyable and meaningful events of that year were
the November and March weekend pledge retreats to Jim
Turner's cottage at Lefroy on Lake Simcoe for which we had
almost unanimous attendances.
The Pig Dinner was held on the traditional first Saturday
in February at the London Labour Hall. For some reason,
in those days, we never seemed to be able to hold it at
the same location more than once. That winter, we
played hockey every Sunday night at South Arena but
had the dubious distinction of finishing the schedule
without a win against the more athletic, but less
academic, competing fraternities.
I look back on the 3 years of active membership in Lambda
Omega as one of the most enjoyable and rewarding periods
of my life. The successes and failures of Chapter projects and
goals prepared me well for the challenges of business and
social relationships I continue to meet on an everyday basis.
Most of all, my Phi Gamma Delta friendships continue as
among the strongest and most valuable I enjoy more than 25
years after graduation.

\r\n1996 PIG DINNER WEEKEND
February 2 and 3, 1996
Pig Dinner weekend was filled with many events,
opportunities to get reacquainted with lost brothers, time to
savour brotherhood and even a few hours dedicated to a
public service project and hockey.
On Friday night, the undergrads opened the house for
early arrivals. About twenty grads availed themselves of
this opportunity and got to meet the undergrads, order
drinks from the pledges and talk about old times and
catch up on news.
On a bright, sunny Saturday moming, 3 grads - Tom
Herbert, John Dries and John Star2ynski along with 3
undergrads assembled to go to the Ronald McDonald House
to clean five rooms and lend a hand to this organization run
solely by volunteer donations with no help from McDonalds
restaurants at all. This charity has also been the focus of fundraising during the year by the chapter with a donation from
the Leapfrog from Lucan event run by the boys.
Congratulations guys on time well spent!
m
The Silver Owl Certificates were handed out to those who
fulfilled the requirement for eligibility - having lived for a mere
25 years after their initiation. The honoured group included
Bill DeWolf, Wayne Pritchard, Jim Turner and Dennis
Wilson from the spring 1970 class. All of them showed up
with Bill DeWolf driving up from St. Catharines and Dill
flying in from Calgary (and were his arms ever sore - groan. I
promise to stop!) From the fall, 1970 class, in attendance
were Don Atkinson, John Starzynski and Mike Woods.
Unable to attend were Paul Bralovich from B.C., Tom Stolfa
in Ottawa and George Isaac, skiing in France.
The guest speaker for the evening was Alex Wittenburg who
addressed his remarks to both the grads and undergrads
separately. His topic was the job market and the economy
and the rapid changes in them. Please forgive me, Alex, if my
interpretation of your talk is not entirely accurate, but I will try
to do my best to paraphrase. To the undergrads, Alex
indicated that the greatest natural resource they could have
was sitting in the room - the grads. However, this did not
mean that they could expect the grads to give them jobs, get
them intervews or do the hard work of selling themselves, as
only they are capable of doing that. He encouraged them to
At noon, the laced gladiators took to the ice in a bonecrushing encounter that left 3 unconscious and 1 maimed.
Did that get your attention? Actually, the turnout was light
and no one could catch Hissonner Peter Hockin, so there is
no official score to report. Hopefully, there will be more
skating wonders next year at this most decent of hours.
Perhaps brothers read the invitation wrong and thought that
this was another midnight madness. Not so, we have come
back to the land and time of the living. Please plan to glide
next year.
The latter part of the afternoon saw many grads roll into
town to register, have a "pop" and talk, talk, talk. At about
6:00 pm, the buses came to transport us to a fine repast at
the Marienbad Restaurant. They even want us to come back
again next year and will even serve buns again, if we want.
Surprised? Anybody want to be the guest speaker?
be diverse in their interests and skills and to not be surprised
that their first choice of employment might not be where
they have to start their careers. However, do not be
discouraged. Work assiduously and keep your eyes and ears
open for opportunity.
Conversely, the grads also have a responsibility to meet the
undergrads, offer their experience through seminars on their
areas of vocation and to be sounding boards for their futures.
This does not mean getting people jobs but it does mean
fulfilling the pledge that the fraternity is "not for college days
alone" by doing what can be done to help. A good start
would be to see interaction at the Pig Dinner with mixed
tables of grads and undergrads with few or no exclusively
grad tables or undergrad tables. Introduction, communication
and establishing contacts are the key to future interaction.
\r\nAlex, I want to congratulate you on your speech. It was very
well received and topical for everyone in attendance. However,
Peter Hockin will not come back if people keep throwing
Jbuns at him - 1 thought he made that abundantly clear.
After dinner, we retired to the house (on the buses this year)
for more talk, poker, blackjack and fun into the wee hours.
This year, however, more people got to sleep at a reasonable
time - 5:00 to 6:00 am - because Lynn Campbell chose to
sleep (/?!) somewhere other than the house.

1. PAUL ROBERT GOOD '72HBA (65) - Gooder is married
to loan and has two boys - Bradley (1978) and Michael
(1981). He is a partner at Judd & Company in the Simcoe
office, which is conveniently located close to a golf course. In
fact, Paul wrote to tell me that he played St. Andrews in
Scotland with one ball.(That must have hurt. I understand
that those operations are very painful.) By the way, Paul,
Murray Coulter wants the tie back that you used to borrow
to tie around your doorknob. He hopes to see his little
brother, Alan Bruce McLean at the next Pig.

And things did not end there. Dan Langer, the undergrad
organizer had cold meat, bagels and a ton of food for those
who wanted to catch a last brunch at the house before
heading home on Sunday.
kFor those who were able to get to the Pig this year, you
"experienced great Fiji hospitality and fun. For those unable to
attend, you were missed, with hopes that you can come next
year. Speaking of which - please mark SATURDAY,

you all next year!

SILVER OWL RECIPIENTS - 1997
The following are the members of the spring and fall pledge
classes of 1971, who will receive their Silver Owl Certificates
at next year's Pig. Please encourage them all to attend the
festivities next year and accept our appreciation of their efforts
over the years. Feel free to phone them, kidnap them, bribe
them, trick them or do whatever it takes to get each of them
to London next year. I can assure you, however, that you will
not have to work too hard on the Good brothers because I
Punk accountants
do not think that, between the 2 of them, that they have
missed any more than 3 Pig dinners over their combined 50
years(25 years each) of membership. Hope to see you all in
London next February 1 st.
2. BRENT HENRY THRALL '72BA (68)- Brent passed ad
astro on September 27, 1993 in Toronto. During his life.
Brent was engaged in a number of pursuits: he worked for
the federal government as a speech writer for Pierre Trudeau
in the area of the arts; he worked for Claude Neon
Advertising; he owned and operated his own upscale catering
business - Memorable Occasions; he was a restaurant critic for
the Toronto Star; he wrote a recipe column - Chefs Showcase
\r\n- for the Toronto Star; he owned and operated the Cafe
Burgermeister Restaurant on Parliament Street in Toronto; he
studied antiques and appraisals at the Christie's School of
Appraisal in London, England. Brent was bom on October 27,
1949 in Sudbury, Ontario and was married to Paula, nee
Patten. He will always be missed.
3. JAMES DOUGLAS VERNON '75MD (87) - Sieve was the
goaltender on the Fiji hockey team discussed by Murray
Coulter in the introductory article. I can honestly say that Jim
Vemon,Jim Turner and Frank Smeenk were the three guys
who seemed the most natural with a beer in their hands,
standing around the house, telling stories. However, he was a
lousy signs game player. Unfortunately, Jim is unable to read
these slurs on his otherwise good character as I do not have a
current address for him. If anyone knows where he is, could
you please let me know, if any of our other MD grads has a
current medical directory, perhaps you could look him up for
me as I do not have one available. Thanks.
4. WILLIAM FREDERICK DESJARDINS '73BA (71) - Initiated
March 4, 1971 - The Reverend was known for being a bit of
a wild partier in his days at Western. So much so that Jim
Turner is still trying to get that garter out of his ? that Bill
pushed up the night of the 1973 Grass Skirt Dinner. Ever the
conscience of the fraternity group. Bill passed away on August
11,1989. He was a man known for his love of life, his
exuberance in its living and his devil-may-care attitude when
it came to having fun. Bill was born on July 12, 1949 in Sault
Ste. Marie, Ontario and was single at the time of his death.
Have a bottle of fine wine for all of us with Brent, Bill!
2. WILLIAM HARRY ELGIE '74BA (81) - Bill disappeared after
graduation up to northern Ontario. The only thing I heard
about him after that was that he was farming, had bought a
large acreage, had a pool installed and made sure that the
corn always grew higher than his other crops. This Sault Ste.
Marie lad has been on the missing list for quite some time.
He was known to show up at Grass Skirt parties with a bone
in his nose. Bill, as well, was a witty guy. I once asked him for
a match and he answered "Your face and my ass!". Oh well,
if you know where he is, please let me know.
3. STEPHEN GEORGE FIRTH '73BA (72) - Stevie is the papa
of four boys(most of the other guys stopped at two, but this
is Firth, remember!)- Gregory, Matthew, Mark and John
Daniel. If he had had another, he would have been named
Luke. Steve spends a lot of time with his kids in between
canying a leader board at the Canadian Open in Oakville in
September (his kid got him the job) and working as the
Director of Finance at Fraser, Beatty, a medium-size
downtown law firm on three or four floors of the Bank of
Montreal building. Steve is part of the London Central
Secondary School invasion in this pledge class along with Rob
Stapleford and Bruce McLean. Steve is one of the four guys
who call me "jack". Steve often visits in London with his
parents, jean and Big Donnie(who played Santa Glaus the
year that Brent Thrall was bitten by too much of the grape).
Steve is looking for a driver to take he, Murray Coulter and
Greg Stoddard to their favorite washroom in the hotel on
the hill in Durham, Ontario. Let's have a ceegar at the Pig,
Stevie!

Heidelburg Canada in Etobicoke. He has coached his older

long". The Gooders want a game, to be followed by a night
children - jenny and Corry - whom he wants to try to keep
away from the Firth boys. Steve still drives that Cadillac
around and refuses to give Firth one free shot every round of
golf any more after Firth used his one freebie to drive Steve's
ball down the golf course away from the green rather than
of entertainment at Goldie's. Bill wrote that he remembers
one night playing signs at the house. Jim Turner (He's come
up a lot, hasn't he? He was President that year.) said that it
was near the end after a number of people had dropped out.
Jim's exact words were "Good! Now we're down to the hard
core drinkers. Let's go!" The following are Bill's own words "Shortly thereafter, poor Jim threw up all over the place."

accounting type, number work there. Perhaps Bruce will see
his brother-in-law, fellow Fiji Bill Hudson at the next Pig.

cigarettes and talking about it.

girls' ringette teams, missing this year's Pig Dinner because of

1. Address changes - Please note the following new addresses
for your fellow grad brothers thanks to Glen Farrow '89BA
'93MBA (very much appreciated Funnel head!):
(a) Robert James Langlois '91BA, 506 Scarboro Avenue.
S.W., Calgary, Alberta T3C 2H6 - engaged to Allison "and the
wedding is set for Calgary in 1996 when it gets a little
warmer. I can't remember the date off hand."

he became a father on November 14, 1995. He and Sheri

world (next of course to my little girl, but I'm biased of
course)."
(c) Dario Frederick Anthonio Priolo '89FA, PENG sent this
e-mail to Glen. "I have to be brief with this one, but all is
going really well of late. I spent a few years in sunny and
tropical Southern Taiwan...no joke man! The place is
absolutely awesome. You wouldn't believe that the filth and
crowds of Taipei are only a 1 /2 hour plane ride away. Anyway,
mark off May 1 on your calendar because that's the day I
blow out of here. I'll go through Vancouver and try to stop
off at Calgary on my way back. We'll try to work out some
details later."
2. Glen "Funnel head" Farrow '89BA '93MBA writes this
update on himself: "I moved out to Calgary to work at Petro-
Canada in June of 1994. My wife Anita and I had a little girl,
Samantha, on January 24, 1995. She is already walking and
talking. Her talking, however, is like her old man after he has
\r\nhad a few too many. I think people can picture that better
now." Thanks, Glen!

Your letter and invitation to the "Pig" finally caught up with

future reference, my new address is: 29 St. Stephen's Close,

not be able to attend the "Pig" this year but will hope to do

coming out skiing. I think Kimberley is the cheapest place for
a ski holiday in Western Canada. We also have back country
skiing from wilderness lodges, CAT & heli-skiing.
Unfortunately, this poor rancher won't make it to the Pig so
pass on my regards to the Brothers. I actually did attend a
couple of Pigs at the U of C house when I was in Calgary.

This university Is faced with
this problem. The problem Is—
What'5 the problem
sir: There seems to be a re-
occurringtheme that appears In
criticizing actions and attitudes
on this campus—this Is "apa
thy". I would like to submit to
you that there Is not a "state of
apathy'' on this campus as all
those with a negative attitude
would have us believe.
There Is on this campus, and
It Is quite evident a problem.
This problem Is evident In most
societies going through growing
pains which are under a demo
cratic form of government. The
government Is usually adequate
to perform the tasks facing It—
but direct contact Is lost, with
a loss In contact, both government
to citizen and citizen to govern
ment, Interest and enthusiasm
decrea.se and overall response
degenerates. Governments can
look back to "The good old days"
but they cannot go back. They
are faced with a desire to regain
the old spirit but the answer Is
not often clear.
"Lack of Communication, Lack
of Co-ordination, and Lack of
Recognition." This society
Is
still relatively small, yet there
Is no pattern widely known and
used of communication flow be
tween the different groups on this
campus. You don't know what the
hell anyone else Is doing, once
more you don't give a damn—If
you wanted to find out what some
one else was doing you couldn't
find out anyways. There Is no
co-ordinating unit—clubs get
money go their way and no unit
knows the total scope of the dif
ferent groups efforts. But since
there is no communication po
co-ordination can take place. And
since there Is no communication
or co-ordination people do not
receive their proper recognition.
I
would
at this time like to
suggest that that mystical tiody—
the U.S.C. set up a commission
to Investigate and make recom
mendations to correct the prob
lem of our campus—Lack of com
munication, lack of co-ordina
tion, and lack of recognition.

that there be no exchange charged on fees and dues payable
to the International fraternity but that exchange
be paid on hard, tangible items
or goods purchased. The
purpose of this is to make
