I am proud to say that Kappa Deuteron was once
again successful in attaining a pledge class of men who are
indeed a cut above. Tyler Stephens and I were the rush
chairmen for this spring. We were very happy to receive a
large amount of assistance from the rest of the undergraduate
chapter which made finding new pledges much easier. We
also appreciate the names which were given to us by all of
the graduate brothers, and I encourage you to continue to do
From the time we receive our bid to the four, five,
or six years later when we leave the illustrious Kappa
Deuteron Chapter at the University of Georgia, service to our
fellow man is engrained into our thoughts. It is a concept
that all will agree on and talk about, maybe even attend a
"leadership" event and/or preach on it, but few actually live
their lives by the true meaning of it. These days it costs too
much to listen to motivational speakers and attend leadership
seminars to hear about how service to your customers will
make your business's profits soar. It's all about how to
increase your bottom line and if it's service to others than
great, two birds with one stone. But how many people really
understand what it means to give ALL of yourself for a
so for this summer. The pledge class is in total six men
including three freshmen and three sophomores. We are
excited about what these men will eventually bring to our
fraternity as brothers, and we know that our pledgeship will
help them grow into the men they hope to become. Thanks
again for your continued support and I will hopefully see you
all at Pig Dinner.

Bom in New Jersey, my father moved to Athens
with his family when he was fifteen years old. He finished
high school at Athens Academy before coming to the
University of Georgia in the fall of 1968. In his four years
as a Georgia Phi Gam, he not only served as a pledge
Carolina. Huge thanks goes to Travis Zeh and Sean
Dwyer for organizing the entire weekend. Most of the
chapter traveled over to Charleston on Friday for the
weekend's festivities. Friday night everybody was on their
own for dinner before the whole chapter and dates joined

up at The Silver Dollar, a bar which the fratemity rented
out. There was live music and ample dancing from our
brothers. On Saturday, Most brothers walked around the
marketplace and The Battery, enjoying the relaxed and fun
atmosphere of the city. As anyone who has been to
presidential candidate David Little. After graduating Phi
Beta Kappa from UGA, he went to the University of
Virginia for law school along side of serving in the Air
Force. Soon after law school his work led him back to
Georgia, this time to Atlanta, where I stayed until it was
time to go to college.
Before coming to the University of Georgia, I had
thought very little about joining a fraternity. However, with
my dad having been a Fiji, the thought was always there
nonetheless. He had taken me by the house many times
before, whether it was for football games or just to see the
newly built residence house, so the place had become
somewhat familiar by the time I was reaching the end of
high school.
Charleston knows, there are countless delicious restaurants
to choose from and everyone enjoyed their choices. On
Saturday night was the main event. We held the Purple
Garter formal in the banquet hall of our hotel, the
Charleston Riverview. It was a night of delicious food,
good times, and great music provided by the Heather
Hayes Band. The night ended with the legendary Purple
Garter race, where everyone is a winner.
Over the years, my dad shared with me many
memories of his time as a Fiji at Georgia. He told me about
football games, formals, getting in trouble for "blacking up"
or "browning down" for Native Weekend, and pretty much
anything else ridiculous that a college student could come
up with. He also told me about the old Prince Avenue house
and the new Lodge, and how he never thought such living
conditions could be so fun. But what stayed with me most
was not the college stories, but rather the realization that so

many of his friends and colleagues that he introduced me to
had been Fiji's as well. The thought that they had all been
such good friends for so long regardless of where they went
in life was the greatest appeal of all for me, making me that
much happier to be able to share it with my dad, and proud
to be a sire and son.

Healthcare of Atlanta through Run for the Kids. No
fraternity in the twelve year history of Dance Marathon has
raised more. Beyond internal accomplishments, brothers
have donated their time to UGA Hero (dedicated to children
with AIDS), UGA Relay For Life, tutoring at Athens
elementary, mentoring, coaching YMCA basketball,
alternative Spring Break trips to aid Katrina victims, and
visiting Children's Healthcare of Atlanta to aid the recovery
It has been my honor to compile this edition of the
FIJIUGA. Huge thanks goes to all of the brothers who
contributed articles, namely Eddie Goepp, John Wiles,
Kramer Johnson, George Jones, Michael Sullivan, and
Kenny Goepp. As a new initiate into this fine chapter, it has
been great to see how Kappa Deuteron's members interact
with each other, with the community, and the world. We
were taught many things throughout pledgeship that at the
time I did not completely grasp. The idea of friendship and
unity was something I thought was all talk. The idea of
service was just something to make us look good.
After putting this edition together and having a
wonderful time at the Purple Garter Formal, I now see that
this fraternity really is united. I have never been apart of
something that I could sit at a table with people who are
four years older and feel perfectly at home. I am
comfortable hanging out with these men, and can leam from
every one of them. I have had meaningful conversations and
thought provoking talks with the men in our fraternity that
have helped me see who I am. They push me towards
excellence and will not allow me to settle for anything less.
As you have read, service is alive and well at
Kappa Deuteron. Brother Bamwell is in Lesotho teaching
and mentoring many children. He has followed the call to
influence so many children. Brother Buchly is helping to
develop the economy and spread the gospel in Ethiopia.

Class of 2008
As 2006 came to a close, old Kappa Deuteron out did
herself once again, boasting arguably the most impressive
philanthropic efforts the chapter has seen in a one year span.
Through the course of the year, brothers served 160 meals at
the Athens Area Homeless Shelter, revised the pledgeship
service which now contributes 300 hours of service to the
Athens community each year, raised $3,500 through a 5K
for the Figelstahler family of Gwinnett County whose
twenty-four year-old son, Ryan, required uninsured
emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor costing
hundreds of thousands of dollars, and raised a record-setting
$17,000 for UGA Dance Marathon supporting Children's
Already in 2007, Kappa Deuteron hosted the
McKinnon Benefit Concert at the Georgia Theatre on
February 20"". The show raised several thousand dollars for
the American Cancer Society. Ongoing projects include
work with the Athens Area Homeless Shelter and a new
recycling program at the residence hall. Needless to say, a
particular one of the five values of Phi Gamma Delta is
thoroughly intact in Kappa Deuteron.
worried about pay, or recognition. Talking to both of them,
they said that their work is true service that they feel called
to do by Christ. The undergraduates are also dedicated to
service, as Kappa Deuteron raised more money than any
other fraternity on campus for Dance Marathon. We have
members on the executive board of both Dance Marathon
and Run for the Kids.
I hope you have enjoyed catching up on all of the
events going on with Kappa Deuteron, and it has brought
back some enjoyable memories for you. I look forward to
seeing you at Pig Dinner and also at tailgates in the fall.

\r\nA Brother in Iraq
Brother Brett Grayson has been deployed to Iraq.
Patrick Bentiey
Class of 2007
Marine Captain Brett Grayson (Class of 2000) was deployed to Iraq in January. As the Staff Judge Advocate for
Second Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), he helps advise the Commanding General on "the application of the rules of
engagement, escalation of force measures, detainee operations, investigations and the prosecution of those, both military
and civilian, who break the law at A1 Asad Airbase, Iraq."
Following his undergraduate years. Brother Grayson attended the University of Georgia School of Law. It was
on September 11, 2001 during his second year of law school that joining the military first crossed his mind. Of that day,
he says that "watching those events unfold forced me to take a hard look at my life." He wondered whether or not he had
done enough for his country. After graduating from law school, he entered private practice in Atlanta, but he continued to
wrestle with the questions for three and a half years before finally taking the step to become a US Marine.
Since joining the Marines, he has encountered many parallels between the Marine Corps and FIJI. As with our
Brotherhood, "Marines come in all shapes and sizes and from every nook and cranny across this great country." Despite
this, persistence is the common denominator between them. They are "trained to accomplish the mission under any and
all circumstances" which "requires a mindset with absolutely no room for quitting." Furthermore, the Marines hold
service and friendship in the highest regard.
His experience in the Marines has given him a new outlook on life and he has come to the following conclusion:
"For a career to be rewarding it must involve serving others in some capacity. If money is the primary factor driving your
decision making, you will end up chasing your tail."
If you would like to reach Brother Grayson and show him your support you can do so at the following address:
