GRADUATE REPORT
Undergraduate Brothers Welcomed to Vance Hall
for 2007-08 School Year Thanks to Leadership
on Maintenance Preparations
House Corporation Appreciates Good Condition
Kept by Undergraduates During Year
Vance Hall opened back up this past August
for what is sure to be another successful year
for the fraternity and the university at large.
This summer, the house underwent it usual
cleaning and maintenance routine. Graduate
Brother John Hughes ’66 saw to it that the
house’s complicated mechanical systems were
serviced, the living quarters were thoroughly
cleaned, and the paint was touched up.
“On a closing note, we hope that
each and every one of you will
take the opportunity to stop by
the house on football weekends.”
Thanks to John’s leadership, the house is
always in first-class condition to welcome back
the undergraduate brothers and rushees in the
fall. The house corporation would like to thank
the undergraduates for all they do to keep the
house in good repair during the school months.
By now, most all of you know that the
capital campaign is coming to an end. With
a relatively small fraternity alumni chapter
of approximately 850 brothers, we have paid
down the mortgage to roughly $225,000.
While it is unfortunate that the debt could not
be completely retired by now, we feel that it is
time to permanently recognize those that have
donated $1,000 or more. If you have not
contributed, please contact one of the fundraising chairmen. Donations totals made by
December 31, 2007 will be included on a plaque
to be permanently displayed in the house.
On a closing note, we hope that each and
every one of you will take the opportunity to
stop by the house on football weekends. There
are always Phi Gams, both young and old,
around the house and in the front yard
enjoying each other’s company. Those of you
who were lucky enough to make it by the house
following the UVA game had the opportunity
to catch up with B. T. Harrington, who is alive,
well, and currently living in Virginia.

\r\nUNDERGRADUATE REPORT
Outstanding Pledge Class of Twelve Will Grace Epsilon This Year;
All Sophomores and Juniors Now Living in Vance Hall
Thanks to House Corporation for Their Dedication in Getting House Ready for Move-In
Fall is here and everyone is getting back
into the swing of things in Chapel Hill.
The house corporation did an outstanding
job of cleaning the house, refinishing the
floors, and getting everything ready to
move back in.
“The house would like to
thank all of the graduate
brothers and especially the
house corporation for their
continued support of Epsilon.”
We are very excited to say that all of
the sophomores and juniors are living in
the house. Rush was a long and stressful
process, but all of the brothers worked hard
and we rounded up an outstanding pledge
class of 12 young men from Wilmington,
Greensboro, Washington, Goldsboro,
Raleigh, Clinton, Winston-Salem,
Laurinburg, Salisbury, and one young man
from Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.
We also had one gentleman from Snow
Hill hold his bid to pledge in the spring.
The new recruits already are working hard,
getting to know all the brothers, and
learning a great deal about the history
of Epsilon.
We are very excited about football,
despite the fact that we can’t tackle, run the
ball, or execute on special teams. The arrival
of Butch Davis has created an excitement
around town that hasn’t been seen since the
days of Mac Brown, and the surprising play
of T.J. Yates has everyone looking forward
to future success.
The house has a pig every game day,
and we hope that all graduate brothers
will come back and enjoy some barbecue
in the front yard and a drink on the
benches. The house would like to thank
all of the graduate brothers and especially
the house corporation for their continued
support of Epsilon.
Keep your friends and graduate brothers up to date! Don’t forget
to upload your news and photos at www.epsilonpgd.com.

\r\nGRADUATE BROTHER Q&A
Marvin Ward ’58, Loyal Supporter of Phi Gamma Delta and True Southern
Gentleman, Reflects on What the Fraternity Meant to Him
Why did you join the fraternity?
Several of my high school classmates and I
went to UNC at the same time and we went
through rush together. I enjoyed being part of
that. During rush, I enjoyed the atmosphere at
the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house and
decided I wanted to become a part of
fraternity life, too. Obviously, I liked the
guys at the house, including my friends from
home, George Pearce, Donald Bryan ’57
and Marland Reid ’63, and I was fortunate
enough to be invited to join them.
Did you live in the house? Who were your
roommates?
Yes, I lived with Donald Bryan for a year
and Marland Reid for a year. Both were
great roommates!
Ward enjoys spending time with his grandchildren.
He married his college sweetheart and today they
relish hours of togetherness with their family.
What kind of influence has the fraternity
had on your life since graduation?
My experiences with Phi Gam broadened
my ability to communicate with people on
a day-to-day basis, both socially and in
the workplace.
Did you have a nickname in the chapter?
Where did it come from?
Yes, they called me “Snerd.” George “Weno”
Pearce came up with it, but I can’t say I know
how he chose this particular nickname.
What was the greatest benefit of your
fraternity experience?
I have a lot of fond memories of fun times
with great guys!
Tell us your favorite memory of fraternity life.
Late afternoon gin rummy games, playing
bridge (believe it or not), going to movies
downtown; and, of course, ping pong games
on the side porch before and after dinner.
Do you remain active with the chapter?
I’m not much involved with the younger
people, but I keep active with the older ones
in Greenville. I look forward to attending our
events each year.
What other activities were you involved in
during your college days?
As I remember, a lot of my time was spent
going to Saint Mary’s in Raleigh!
With whom do you stay in contact from
the fraternity?
Donald Bryan probably more than anyone else.
Donald keeps in touch with many Phi Gams
and is instrumental in keeping us connected.
Tell us about your family: Are you
married? Children?
I married my college sweetheart, Sadie Carol
Etheridge, and we are still together. We have
two children: a daughter, Chris, and a son,
Holt. Chris and her husband, John, are in
Charlottesville, Virginia. Holt and his wife,
Amy, live in Battelboro, NC (and live in my
home place). We have two wonderful
grandchildren, with whom we enjoy many
hours of togetherness.
Tell us about your career.
I worked for the Carolina Telephone Company
for ten years. The rest of my working years
have been in the real estate, property management and self-storage businesses. I retired in
March, 2007.
What kind of volunteer activities do you
participate in?
Through the years, I’ve been involved with
the Jaycees, the Chamber of Commerce,
Chockoyotte Country Club, Roanoke Rapids
Board of Realtors (president in 1974), and All
Saints Episcopal Church vestry. I am currently
the chairman of the All Member Canvas for
All Saints Episcopal Church, which is raising
money for our 2008 church budget.
If a young man asked your opinion about
joining a fraternity, what would you advise?
By all means, JOIN. He will meet and have
experiences and relationships with guys that
may help open many doors socially in his
college life and professionally later on.
