where he was
a four-sport
athlete in
hockey, lacrosse, tennis, and golf.
He was accepted to Miami University
and quickly decided it was the school
for him. As a legacy of Mu Upsilon,
Pete Jones (1982), Jay wanted to
make sure that his fraternity rush
experience was not influenced
by anything other than his own
preferences, but after meeting some
of the guys in the Fiji house he quickly
realized it was a perfect fit. Jay is now
in his junior year at Miami University
studying business management in
the Farmer School of Business and
he hopes to one day run his own

Cole Schlesner (Bowling Green
State 2018), Blake knew the Phi

didn’t need to think twice when
offered a bid. He was previously Pig

\r\nDONALD W. FRITZ PAVILION
\r\nDid you know that Fiji brother
Bob Gardner (1978) was elected
to the Miami University Athletic
Hall of Fame in 2015? (sorry we
missed this a few years ago) Bob
won five individual MAC titles
and led Miami men’s tennis to a
string of success from 1975-78.
The Red and White captured
four-consecutive MAC
Championships and won 48straight MAC matches during
Gardner’s MU career. Gardner
seized titles at No. 2 singles in
1976 and at No. 4 singles in
1975 and 1977, while pairing up
to capture doubles titles in the
third flight in 1975 and 1977.
Gardner and his teammates
made MAC history in 1977 as
they won all nine flights at the
MAC Championships, a feat
that has never been duplicated.
He earned First-Team All-MAC
honors in 1976 and helped
Miami to an NCAA Tournament
appearance in 1975. Gardner
served as team captain his final
season in 1978.

THE END OF THE SLANT WINTER 2019 MU UPSILON CHAPTER AT MIAMI UNIVERSITY
Changes from Miami for 2019
Starting in spring of 2019, there are
specific changes to fraternity life at
Miami University intended to limit
risk among the fraternity chapters.
• Starting in spring semester
2019, fraternities will need
to have new members complete
online training courses on
leadership and accountability.
• The groups will complete a new
member period in four weeks
(from eight).
•
These changes are a strategy to
help Miami create a model Greek
community – one where students
bring out the best in each other,
hold one another accountable
and are leaders on campus and
across the country. The changes
are expected to:
• Create a culture that develops
and rewards student
leadership through
participation in a fraternity.
• Focus on academic excellence
and student success.
• Address the nationwide
challenges of hazing, high-
risk alcohol and drug
use while holding students
and chapters accountable for
standards.
•
in house director. You will
remember this as a house mother.
It has been at least 30 years
since it was a regular practice
for fraternity chapters at
Miami to have live-in directors,
sometimes known in the past as
housemothers. The fraternities’
national organizations will work
with local chapters to hire the
live-in directors.
The directors, who are expected
to be hired by August 2019, will
oversee property and events,
and provide general oversight to
the chapters. Several other large
universities across the country
have live-in house directors.
Your House Corporation Board
of Trustees, the Board of Chapter
Advisors and the undergrad
officers are working to comply to
these new requirements as they
will require additional expense
and increased efforts.
Michael D. Bevis (1970)
House Corporation President
