Winter 2020
Letter from the President of the Undergraduate Chapter
Dear Fijis,
The fall semester is off to a great start as we continue to grow our fraternity and our involve-ment on campus. There are
26 brothers living in the Chapter House and filling the house to maximum capacity has resulted in a lively and positive
experience. Additionally, about half of our total brotherhood utilizes the Chapter House meal plan, which brings many
of us together for lunch and dinner throughout the week. There have also been several improvements to the house. The
Chapter purchased several new beds to accommodate the high demand for living in the Chapter House, and we thank
our alumni for the funds to make these additions possible. We have also enjoyed the addition of air conditioning units in
the Chapter Room and the rest of the first floor. The Chapter House is in great condition and we thank Tim Schlein, our
house manag-er, for leading the way with his efforts.
Our Chapter had a strong academic semester in the spring, with an overall GPA of 3.51, which is above the all-male
undergraduate students average and the IFC average. Our newest members, the Pis, achieved an excellent 3.57 GPA
overall. Several of the seniors have already accepted full time jobs for next summer, and many brothers have secured
internships for the coming year.
Our Chapter is looking forward to several great events. We are excited to host our second annual “Midnight Brunch”
philanthropy event at the Chapter House, which raises money for the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
Sincerely,
Matthew Gilbertson
Letter from the President of the Alumni Board
The Beta Chapter continues to be leaders among its peers within the
Penn community. The Maddie Marshall Kitchen has been dedicated and
to the right is the plaque that is hanging by the entrance to the kitchen
recognizing her many years of dedicat-ed service, the value of sharing
a meal with brothers and the graduate brothers who generously gave
to make a first class commercial kitchen and preserve the tradition of
brotherhood meals.
A new development out of the administration is the requirement
starting in 2021 that all sophomores at the University must live in
University owned dorms. 3619 is a University owned dorm however the
Greek system houses were excluded from this policy. This policy will
make it very difficult for many Greek houses to fill their rooms every
school year because they will only have a pool of members eligible to live
in the house from their junior and senior ranks.

\r\nLetter from the President of the Alumni Board Continued...
This new policy will pose significant challenges and questions of long-term viability for many of the houses
to meet the rent rolls expected by the University. We have spoken with the undergraduate leadership board and
have asked them to prepare for this change through a culture shift of expectations and outright requirements that
juniors and seniors live in the house.
The good news is we have a very desirable premium location and are attracting decent size pledge classes
to fill future beds, but it is not without headwinds. The House is a “dry” house under our agreement with the
University which makes it less appealing to seniors to live there, many of who are 21 years of age. Another
obstacle is rent. The University room charges can be as much as $500 more a month than similar off campus
housing which can be a significant determinant for students and parents making rooming decisions.
I do predict there will be Greek houses that will struggle to fill their rooms and eventually will be subject
to forfeiture of their house to the University for breach of their dormitory agreements. We will do our best
to manage this shift and continue to build on a special and unique experience for undergraduates at the Beta
Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta.

Alumni News
Terry Spahr (1988) is the Executive Director of Earth Overshoot, a non profit dedicated to ensuring that
sustainability is central to all personal and public decision making in order to achieve a world characterized by
human well being and flourishing biodiversity. He recently completed a high production value feature length
environmental documentary on unsustainable population growth, its global impact and the solutions to a
sustainable future. It has been accepted into multiple film festivals and is expected to be released in late Spring
2020. To learn more visit 8billionangels.org or earthovershoot.org.
Steve Giegerich (1987) writes “Just retired and moved to France about two weeks ago, and still settling in,
getting oriented and adjusting to retired life. Daniel and Emily have been over here in this small city where
Daniel grew up (Castres - about 50 miles east of Toulouse) for the past year while I was in Havana, so I’ve just
moved in with them. Eventually, I plan to do some periodic retiree contract gig work for the State Department,
filling in for staffing gaps, peak season help, etc. at embassies and consulates around the world, but that isn’t
formalized quite yet. Emily is starting first grade here (and loving it - it’s amazing how easily she switches back
and forth from French to English). We plan to move to Philadelphia next summer after she finishes school.”

\r\n2020 Frank Norris Pig Dinner Update
The date for this year’s spring Pig Dinner has been set for Saturday, April 25. We are still look-ing for our
guest speaker; if you would like to nominate a distinguished individual, please email Jake Diamond-Reivich at

A Note from a Grad Brother:
I reached out to the Corresponding Secretary at Fiji last spring and was very fortunate to be able to hire
a rising junior for a six week internship last summer. He was immediately prepared and contributed on
several corporate projects that we assigned to him. I was very impressed with his abilities and willingness to
make a contribution to our firm and to also learn and be exposed to the various aspects of the company and
industry. We tasked him right away and he was aggressive and informative and willing to participate.
Consider this: he lives in West Philadelphia and our office is not on a convenient train line, but he took
a combination of 3 buses/trains to and from work each day to plug from 9 to 5 and over four total hours
of commuting time. We were greatly appreciative of his efforts. He represented himself, Fiji, and Penn
extraordinarily well and encouraged our company to continue its use of undergrads for internships.
If you are interested in accessing undergraduate brother talent for internships or full times roles, please
reach out to Jake Diamond-Reivich (jdiamondreivich@gmail.com).
Obiturary for Richard H.W. Chadwell
Jack Porter 1955 and Hap Merriman 1955 report of their classmate’s, Dick Chadwell, passing. Dick, Jack and Hap
were roommates all four years at Penn and remained close lifelong friends throughout their lives. For the past
four years, all three lived a few minutes from each other in Vero Beach, Florida seeing each other on a regular
basis.
Richard H. W. Chadwell April 13, 1933 - December 4, 2019
Richard was born on April 13, 1933 in Chicago. From day one, he was the apple of his mother’s (Phyllis White)
eye! He was raised in Providence, Rhode Island and loved his educational experience at Moses Brown School.
Then, he was off to the University of Pennsylvania. He joined Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and made life-long
friends.. His father, Dick Chadwell, died his freshman year. That necessitated his going to work for his tuition. He
was an ad salesman and a model at department stores.
After he graduated from Penn in 1955, he served in the Navy for two years. During that time he decided to go
into the world of finance after helping officers of higher rank with their money management! And he never
looked back. His vocation and avocation was “the Stock Market.” He retired from Morgan Stanley. Previously,
he was a partner at Kidder Peabody and served as broker/manager for several brokerage offices in the East and
Midwest. His clients were loyal, did well, and many became his friends. Richard loved the opera, classical music,
golf, great wines, reading, travel and hats. Also, as a founding member of Quail Valley, he so enjoyed his time at
all of the Club’s venues.
His three sons were a great source of pride for him: Rich (Paula, deceased), Philip (Tracy) and David (Amy).
His favorite poem, “It” by Rudyard Kipling, served as a guide as he raised his sons. He so loved and admired his
six grandchildren: Claudia, Nick, Philip, John, Anna and Elliot. He loved their unique personalities, loved being
with them and loved watching their accomplishments. They affectionately all call him “Bonka”. His beloved wife,
Wanda Lincoln (whom he met on a blind date he didn’t want to go on), survives Richard, along with his sons and
grandchildren.
