FIJI Island & Rush
FIJI Island, on April l6th, isn't just Phi Gamma Delta's
"best and biggest party, it's also a major milestone on the long
road to a better pledge class, house, and chapter. It is prob
ably the most important rush party we hold, and Dan Krones, our
Rush Chairman, is working hard to make it the most successful
rush party also. Turnout at the Casino Party wasn't as good as
we had hoped, and we need to insure that there will be a good one
at FIJI Island. Even though it may be too late for the party,
please contact Dan if you have a rush prospect.
If this letter reaches you after FIJI Island, don't forget
rush. We hope to have several rush parties across the state,
including two in St. Louis, two in Kansas City, and at least one
at the house in Columbia. We'll need places in Kansas City and
St. Louis to hold those parties, and we'd like any help you can
give us.
As always, vf^ need helpI If you know of any bright, sociable,
and active young men coming to MU, please tell us.
Even if they
are already students at the University, we need to know about
them.
Also, it's not too early to start thinking about rush for
'78. Dan can be contacted at the house (442-9515 or 449-1578)
or at Mr. Guy's (449-8411). We'll appreciate any help you can
give us.
Pig Dinner
All of us here at Chi Mu hope that you can attend Pig Dinner,
which will be held this year on April 23rd.
Dinner will be at the
Holiday Inn East here in Columbia, and it begins at 7S00 pm. An
open bar will be available before and after the dinner. Both you
and your wives are invited, and the price will be fifteen dollars
per couple or ten dollars if you come by yourself.
The featured
speaker will be Judge Frank D. Connett, Jr., Chi Mu class of '49,
who, as mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter, is beginning his
fourth term as Circuit Judge in St. Joseph.
We need to know three things before April 23.
(1) Are you
coming to Pig Dinner? (2) Are you bringing your wife? (3) Would

you like hotel reservations?
Please send this information to:

you there!
Nbws from YOU
ARTHUR F. SETTLAGE (*41) has been elected as a director of the
Federal Home Loan Bank, located in St. Louis. His travels in
this new position take him all over North and South Dakota, Minne
sota, Iowa, and Missouri, and will probably (and unfortunately)
prevent him from coming to Pig Dinner.
FRANK D. CONNETT, JR. (*49) is beginning his foiurth term as Circuit
Judge in St. Joseph. He is also the featured speaker for Pig
Dinner. He reports that GORDON SHAFFER (*49) has been made an
officer in a bank in Schadron, Nebraska, and that RONALD REED (*5^)
has just been nominated as U.S. District Attorney for the western
district of Missouri by Sen. Thomas Eagleton (D.-Mo.).
BAXTER DUNBAR (*54) is now in the insurance business, with an
office at 4722 Broadway in Kansas City, Mo. He*s also tinkering
around with future energy sources, building a solar collector to
either heat his home or swimming pool, which he hopefully lets
his neighbor, A. OVERTON DURRETT, JR. (*54) use occasionally.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the border, WILLIAM C. lUEN (*69)
reports that he is siurrounded by Jayhawks in Overland Park.
Fortunately, he's always running into BILL BROWN, C. BROOKS WOOD,
GEORGE D. •Buzz" DUNCAN, and STEVE ENGELBERT, all from the class
of *69.
He and his wife Nancy have a son, Quentin (*97) who will
be two in May.
His brother MIKE (*76) now lives in Port Arthur,
Texas, where he and his brother have exchanged exactly one letter
apiece.
He's trying to get some of the Kansas City brothers to
gether for Pig Dinner.
Gee, it's great to get a complement now and then! We'd like to
thank JAMES MILLAN ('53), MICHAEL BENDER ('73). and GALEN MUSSMAN
(*73) for their complimentary letters, and we'd also like to
thank Brothers Millan and Bender for their contributions to this
newsletter and the house. Others we'd like to thank are CHARLES
McMULLIN ('39), ROBERT GARDNER (*53). and CHRIS GRAHAM ('68) for
their hard efforts on behalf of Chi Mu in the past few weeks.
The editor would like to apologize to CHRIS GRAHAM and MORRIS J.
NUNN ('67) for leaving their names off of the Board of Trustees,
and to JOHN H. CARUTHERS ('29) for leaving his name on the list.

Lost FIJI'S
Because of excessive mailing cosfs for handling
unforwardable mail and because of a growing number
of lost brothers, national has asked all chapters
to make a concerted effort to clear up our lost
brother list. We are asking your help in "cnis
drive. Below is a list of Chi Mu|s lost brothers.
If you know how to get in touch with any of these
people, or if the list is in error,we would like
to hear from you.
Thank you!

Intramurals
Phi Gamma Delta is having another good year in intramurals.
Presently, we rank seventh in the fraternity standings, and hope
to better that with the second semester sports left.
After a
rather disappointing basketball season in which the FIJI team was
knocked out of a division title by a one point loss to the Phi Delts,
we bounced back to take third place in basketball freethrows.

The soccer team, coached by Mark Schnurbusch and currently
1-and-l for the season, is working hard for a playoff spot. The

new prospects.

round off the almost completely returning team. Bowling also
looks very promising, with junior Rex Waller (who averaged 170
for the Kirksville bowling team) and graduate brother Phil Oresick
leading the team.
With a little success in some other sports this
spring, we hope to raise our standing from seventh to an even .
higher number.
President's Message
Dear Brothers,
Lately, I believe things have started to turn for the better
at Chi Mu.
We have obtained a new cook who has been continually
preparing excellent meals and showing initiative in the first month
of employment. For instance, she-alw^s works longer hours than
required and even came in over spring break to work on the kitchen.
We also hired a cleaning lady to come in three days a week. Al
together the hiring of this cleaning lady and cook will cost us
only $^0 extra per month. We intend to make up these costs and
the costs of the FIJI Missourian by having a fund raiser under
the direction of Greg Gill, son of Lawrence Gill (*52). Two of
our major problems. Accounts Receivable and apathy are starting
to clear up.
House members on AR's will have their plates taken
away at meals and are otherwise being strongly encouraged to get
loans. The apathy is starting to dissipate as more guys who
never really worked for the chapter are starting to gradually get
involved.
Nevertheless, the main emphasis is rush—the quality
of rush, in my opinion, will determine whether this house reemerges
as a strong, vibrant fraternity on campus.
Fraternally yours,
Pete Cargill
