already been active in several aspects of the fraternity. Del
has filled a big void on our "B" basketball team and David
has been helpful with the Austin rush program. Affiliations

Deuteron Fiji has become an integral part of the decision
making process at the University of Texas. In the first week
of March, Brother Bill Walker ('78) was elected to the posi
tion of President of the Inter-Fraternity Council. Bill has al
ready shown his leadership ability within the Chapter by filling
the roles of Intramural Manager and the Public Relations
position. Through the position of IFC President Bill will be
responsible for the relations and communications between the
fraternity system and the university and administration. There
could be no better man to be selected than Brother Bill Wal

\r\nFrom the Desk of the President
Usually the message from the
president consists of a list of accomplishmtots the chapter has
attained up to that point in the
year. Instead, I felt it appropriate to tell you what I, with the
good time to step back and again evaluate certain aspects of
our operation to see if they are the best or if a better alterna
tive exists. Once again, certain aspects of Greek life, most
noticeably the pledge programs are under pressure. Without
improvement at these points, some fraternities and the system
as a whole will suffer the consequences. We have recognized
help^of the cabinet and the back-
the problems and have no intention of being a victim of such
repercussion.
However, we realize that staying
j/,
the best can only be maintained
by hard work, and satisfaction
can only be felt after such achievement.
This marks the 150th birthday of the American Fraternal
System and the 94th birthday of the Tau Deuteron. Fortunate
My overall goal as president is to improve the chapters
relationship with the community, the university, and the other
fraternities and sororities here at Texas. After my first three
months in office, I am glad to report that we are well on our
way in most of these areas. Finally, I would like you to know
that elected with me is the hardest working, most cohesive
cabinet I could imagine. Together with the strength and atti
tude of the chapter, I expect Phi Gamma Delta to have an
other successful and prosperous year.

NEW COLONY PRE-INITIATION CEREMONY HELD

RUSH
January 22, 1977 marked the first day for the ADX chapter
at Baylor to become a Delta colony of Phi Gamma Delta.
The ceremony was presided over in a joint effort of Tau Deu
teron and the SMU chapter with Texas' David McAllister and
Brian Barnard being joined by the Recording Secretary ot
SMU. Various brothers of both chapters took part in the
event which marked the first step in the colony's road to be

coming Phi Gamma Delta's newest chapter.
After the ceremony on the Baylor campus, all of us were
treated to a superb lunch by the Baylor group where Brothers
McAllister and Field Secretary Jim Hickey all congratulated
ADX on this initial step.
For those of us at Tau Deuteron the ceremony took on
special significance since it was at Baylor that our chapter
had its original roots before moving to Austin and the Uni
versity. Naturally, unprejudiced as we are, we feel this was a
good move! Seriously, the future return of a Fiji chapter at
Baylor is a warm and welcome sight for all of us.
The close ties between our chapters already appears to be
forming as visits between us are occurring with increasing

with a lot of enthusiasm. Our Christmas Parties were a great
success and plans for Roundup and summer rush are well
underway.
Everyone is optimistic that we will again acquire' another
strong pledge class next fall, but of course you can not ac
complish this without a strong rush program. As in the past,
a lot of time, effort and planning are required, but active
support from the alumni is a key essential for success.
Last summer we received a lot of support from the alumni,
resulting in a fall pledge class of forty excellent men. We are
looking forward to the same amount of support this year.
Please send any rush recommendations or suggestions you
may have. With your help we have no doubts that we will be
able to carry on the tradition of Phi Gamma Delta at the
University.

With only a few headaches to report as casualties, we all

The trip home was livened by Fiji and Theta choruses,

INTRAMURAL
REPORT
Senior Spotlight!
Tau Deuteron wants to recognize one of its outstanding
seniors by putting the Senior Spotlight on Robert J. Camp
bell of Claude, Texas. Brother Campbell has distinguished
himself in the field of academics in a multitude of ways,
culmonating in his acceptance to every medical school in
Texas, with plans on attending Baylor College of Medicine.
His scholarly honors include membership in Phi Eta Sigma
honor fraternity. College Scholars, numerous listings on the
Dean's Honor Roll, and his present position of Cum Laude
Ampla Et Magna in his graduating class.
However, Brother Campbell hardly limits himself to the
books (although he currently boasts the highest grade point
of a senior in the fraternity). On the contrary, his activities
include handball, writing, and working at a restaurant in
Austin. In the fraternity the positions of Fiji Chaplain and
Scholarship Chairman have been filled by Brother Campbell.
Robert's graduation in May will result in a vacancy to be
missed by all at Tau Deuteron, but we know such a Brother
will not allow himself to be forgotten.
As the Fall Semester closed here at Buen Retiro the Fijis
were neck and neck in the race for the Trophy. Finishing
among the top 4 spots in football, tennis singles, badminton,
swimming, volleyball, handball doubles, and table tennis sin
gles, simply shows how the Fijis rate out of the 23 fraternities
on campus. Tops, no doubt about it! Also, in the Fall Sernester, Gary McClure (Corpus), Spencer Rigney (San Antonio),
and Tommy Protho (Tyler) each added crucial points through
the intramural manager system. A round of thanks to these
guys for sure.
Now basketball is underway. Enthusiasm might be judged
by looking at the Fiji entries. We have entered both A and B
teams as well as 3 mullet league teams.
Handball Singles are completed with honors going to David
Lumpkins (Austin) and Bruce Hill (San Antonio) in the
"A" division, and Scott Telkamp (Houston) in the "B divi
sion.
At this time, table tennis looks as if it is all at the mercy
of the Fijis. Teams from San Antonio of Richard HocottDavid McAllister and Wade Wise-Glenn Mortimer are joined
by Rick Lanham-Mike Carnahan of Amarillo, have begun
their short march to the top with resounding victories.
Great expectations are in the future for the Fijis in Soft
ball and Doubles Tennis competition. With the weather be
ginning to warm up, play will soon be in full swing. Golf
doubles and Track are also to be played this semester.

Unfortunately there is a good and bad side to our program.
The bad news being our Intramural program's loss of Chris
McDaniel and Alec Beck to University of Texas Football,
Richard Hocott and Kirk Branum to The University's golf
teams, Robert Schaffer to University of Texas Baseball and
Freshman Chuck Frazer to the Texas Tennis team. The good
news for these brothers and The University speaks for itself

ALUMNI MAKE IT WORK
This is the first in a series of articles to be run which will
help inform Alumns as to how some of their brothers, who
are active with the fraternity, are doing.
To start off this series it seems appropriate to spotlight
Graham Wilson "Class of 52". Mr. Wilson resides here in
Austin where he is involved in real estate. He and his
wife, Joey Banks, have two children, Leslie and Brett.
Mr. Wilson has been very active in Austin Alumn activities
over the years, and in what spare time he has left, he plays
the radio and repairs his pride and joy—a car whose origin
he said was uncertain.
We hope to see Mr. Wilson along with all the other alumns
at this years Pig Dinner in April.
