SIGMA CHI IS BACK!
On October 15,
2009, Phi Gamma Delta
made it official – we’re
back at USC!
In a pledging
ceremony attended by
many local Fijis, including
Paul Alwine (1962),
John Sloway (1979),
Tyson Beem (1997), and
Jeff Ingram (1978), 39
founding fathers were inducted as colony pledges.

ceremony marks the end of

GRADUATE VOLUNTEERS EMERGE
By: Jeff Ingram (USC 1978), President - Board of Colony Advisors
After eight long
years, Fiji is back on campus
as we formally pledged 39
founding fathers into the
Sigma Chi Colony on October
15. We can all be proud of the
men who have accepted the
challenge of re-establishing
our chapter. They have an
above average GPA, are active
in service to others both on
and off campus, many participate in athletics and other
student organizations, and all
have a desire to create the #1
fraternity at USC.
We owe a debt of
gratitude to both Justin
Burns and Jon Vaughn
from International Headquar-
ters for what they were able to
accomplish. While we could
not have done it without
them, working with them behind the scenes has been our
new Board of Colony Advisors
(BCA). Now that Justin and
Jon have returned to Lexington our BCA will take the lead

This is the beginning of something great, something we want you, as a

in all areas: scholarship, philanthropy,
campus leadership, intramurals and
social activities. How can you be part of

dressed in suits, walking into each sorority house bearing gifts and flowers.
However, the number of men
in the initial pledge class is not the
most impressive aspect of this new
group. “Quality over quantity,” as they
say – it’s clear Fiji got both. With a 3.49
grade point average, involvement in
close to 50 student organizations, leaders of clubs on campus, from Eagle
Scouts to USG officers, to University
athletes to student ambassadors, from
entrepreneurs to local political campaign representatives, from California
to New York… these men truly represent some of the best of the best at
USC.
Just take a look at a short
summary of this new group:
• Several men play on the Club
Rugby Team, Lacrosse Team,
the Club Ultimate Frisbee
Team, the Club Soccer Team,
and the Club Volleyball Team.
• Men are involved in the Under-

graduate Student Government
(USG), including holding officer
positions in the organization.
Several men have started their
own businesses.
Several men are involved in hall
government and are Resident
Advisors (RAs).
Several men are in the Trojan
Knights, including the Rush Chairman and Fundraising Chairman.
Men are in student organizations
such as the Trojan Film Society,
Alpha Lambda Delta Honorary,
Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Society, Alpha Kappa Psi Business
Fraternity, the USC Boxing
Club, and the USC Entrepreneur
Club…and many others.
Men have created their own organizations on campus, including the USC Life Cell group and
the Association for Cultural
Exploration.
Several men are Eagle Scouts,
Marshall Student Ambassadors, and Annenberg Ambassadors.
•
Several men are in the Naval ROTC
and one gentleman is a Marine who
has been on two tours in Iraq.
• One man is a campaign representative for a politician in California.
• One man is on USC’s Aero Design
Team.
• Several men are in the USC Triathlon Club.
The Colony’s mission is not simply to launch Phi Gamma Delta – the goal
is to become the top fraternity on campus.
Phi Gamma Delta was built on Excellence
and these men are committed to rebuilding
the Trojan Fiji tradition started in 1948.
The ultimate reward, which typically arrives in 12-18 months after this initial
startup, is the return of the Sigma Chi
Charter.
Fiji is back, Fiji is taking over
USC’s campus, and brothers can expect
great things from the new Sigma Chi Fijis.
It’s a great time to be a Trojan Fiji!

look into starting a chapter and now, he
has that chance! He's an avid soccer

Chapter House 1961 - 880 West Adams Street
After receiving a mailing announcing Phi Gamma Delta’s return to USC, Mrs.
Beverly Munchhof wrote into the International Headquarters on behalf of her
late husband, Leo “Duke” Munchhof (1950). Duke was one of the original
founders of the Chapter. Her letter is summarized below:
“Duke originally pledged Fiji at Occidental College for one year
before transferring to USC, which had no chapter on campus at that time. Because of his good experiences at Occidental, he was motivated to initiate plans
to colonize a chapter at USC, along with several others. Together, they made a
trip to the Headquarters in the East and came back successful.”
Mrs. Munchhof remembers the Fijis “visiting the Kappa Kappa Gamma
house frequently (apparently, only to get “ideas” from the House Mother and
cooks, according to Duke), which was only the beginning of their 59-year marriage. She recalls the pinning ceremony on the steps of her house perfectly – “a
joint ceremony with Phi Gam Richard Cooling (1952) and then Kappa Kappa
Gamma President Pat Zeiser.” Richard was in the first new pledge class and
Duke was the Pledge Educator.
Mrs. Munchhof was in the first pledge class of the USC Kappa Kappa
Gamma Chapter, having transferred after one year from Glendale
College.
“Fiji was always a fun group to be around,” Mrs. Munchhof comments.
“They were obviously quite popular with the Kappas and they were fun to go out
with, too!” She then emphasizes: “Of course, we tried not to over-do-it. ”

TIME, TALENT AND TREASURY
Phi Gamma Delta is truly
not for college days alone. Several
area Fijis, including many from other
institutions, have stepped forward to
create the Board of Colony Advisors
(BCA) and provide their time and
talents in advising and supporting
the new Colony.
In addition, several graduate
brothers answered the call when
asked to step forward and provide
financial assistance to support an
International Headquarters recruitment team and other startup costs.
This small group, a group representing only 8.5% of all USC Fijis,
raised $18,380.
But the campaign is far from
over. To be sure that Phi Gamma
Delta has not only the best advisors
supporting the young men, but the
financial assistance available to provide for scholarships, programs, and
other graduate reunion events, your
help is needed to reach Sigma Chi’s
ultimate goal of raising $100,000.

amount of donations for graduate
