Welcome to the
Spring 2009 edition of the
Pine Tree Fiji. We have
welcomed back 35 brothers
with 21 of them currently
living in the castle. The
brotherhood has continued
it’s commitment to fill the
house, as we have just
come off one of our most
successful rushes in recent
history initiating 11 new
and promising brothers.
The castle’s image is slowly improving
both inside and out. We
have been doing major
renovations in the basement, which we hope to
have finished within the
next couple of weeks.
Minor renovations are being done throughout the
house to improve the quality
of living for everyone. The
cabinet will be meeting biweekly with Greek life
Director Gustavo Burkett in
an effort to improve the
image of the castle in the
eyes of the University
administration, which has
been lackluster as of late.
We will be taking a very
active role in the university
sponsored winter carnival, as
well as many other campus
events.
Scholarship has
improved quite a bit since last
semester. Our GPA has had a
large increase and is now
above the all fraternity average. We will continue to
Undergraduate brothers together in
front of the castle
work hard alongside our
Faculty advisor, Pankaj
Aggrawal, to increase our
GPA and our positive image
on campus.
Our recruitment
chairmen have done a great
job thus far this year. Last
semester brought 12 new
pledges, resulting in 11 new
brothers. Our recruitment
system has become much
more organized than it had
been in the past, resulting in a
much more efficient recruitment process.
Brotherhood morale
has been very strong in recent
semesters. Our intramural
teams have been very successful as of late, as we recently won the indoor softball
championship. Brotherhood
events occur often, and always bring a large turnout.
We are currently working to
organize a large sorority
beauty and talent pageant as a
social service event. We have
high hopes in its success and
its ability to be done every
year in the future.
Overall the house is
in great condition and its image on the university will
continue to improve through
the hard work of both the
cabinet and the brotherhood
as a whole. We would like to
thank all of the graduate
brothers who continually donate their support and we look
forward to seeing all of you at
the Annual Frank Norris Pig
Dinner which will be held
April 25, 2009.

6th Annual Fiji Food Drive
This year marked the sixth
consecutive year that we have
conducted a local food drive to
benefit the Crossroads Ministry right in Old Town. All undergraduate brothers and
pledges gathered together on
the weekend of October 11th
in hopes of gathering as much
food as possible for the more
unfortunate right in time for
the Thanksgiving holiday.
Brothers and pledges alike
worked together to go door
to door and ask for help in
canned goods and donations
for those who need it most in
this time of need for many.
This social service project
was headed by both Adam
Lewicki and Jacob LaRoche.
These two acted as great leaders and brought all undergraduate brothers together to
meet their expected goal of
4,000 pounds of food. Not
only was this goal met but it
exceeded expectations and we
produced 4, 500 pounds along
with significant donations. We
also exceeded results pro-

Notable Donation:
Paul Lessard generously
donated these Greek letters mounted right under
the flag. A glorious addition to the Castle.
Financially, the Spring
’09 semester at the castle
has started out well. We
welcomed twenty-one inhouse brothers this semester, and house bills have
been collected much faster
than in recent years. The
brotherhood’s commitment
to fulfilling all financial
obligations to the chapter is
being upheld.
Our current situation is
allowing us to make several
improvements to both the
physical structure of the
castle and to the brotherhood. Renovations include
thousands of dollars in materials and labor toward re-

drive held approximately one
month afterward. The all
Greek drive produced around
1000 pounds of food while we
more than quadrupled that
number within our own
chapter drive.
The food drive is only one
of the many social service
projects we have planned for
the future, so look forward to
hearing from us about new
events going down here in Fijiland.

plumbing the graduate advisor bathroom, much needed
lighting in the living room,
dining room, basement, and
ram, new ram beds, and a
massive update in the second floor bathroom. Our
failing Wi-Fi system is being updated by the Geek
Squad in order to provide
wireless internet access in
every corner of the castle.
These projects, along with
new items such as a house
camera, vacuum cleaner,
and small kitchen appliances are helping to boost
the morale of the brotherhood, and are made possible
through collection of past
due bills from previous
semesters and generous
donations from our
graduates.
We hope that all of our
efforts to improve the
chapter house and the
brotherhood will encourage
more new brothers to move
into the castle in order to
lower our $3,400 house bill.
We also hope that these
efforts will show you, our
graduates, the tremendous
amount of love and care
that we have for the glorious castle that you have
passed down to us.

News From the Purple Legionnaire
I’ve been the Purple Legionnaire for a little more than a year now.
I have to say I am very pleased with
the progress the chapter has made over
the last year. I’ve been able to work
with a very competent cabinet led by
Ryan Clippert and Zach Sheltra. Under their leadership, the chapter has
been able to pay off all of its debts,
run their successful annual food drive
collecting a huge amount of food, and
this past fall had one of the
largest pledge classes in
recent history. The
chapter also has a new Chef
this year and all reports are
that the food has been very
good. The New cabinet led
by Kurt Thibeault and Chad
Bolduc are poised to pick up
where Ryan and Zach have
left off and I’m looking
forward to a great spring
and fall working with these
guys.
Being the Purple Legionnaire
has been a great experience for me
thus far. I’ve been able to reconnect
with the Castle and graduate and under
graduate bothers in way that just isn’t
possible if you are just coming to Pig
Dinner or Homecoming every year or
two. Working with Chris Cole, Pilgrim and Rob McKay has been great
fun. These guys know how to get
things done, and it’s always a lot of
fun when we are able to have a “BCA
Meeting” in McKay’s basement that
just happens to be at the same time as
a Patriots or Red Sox game.
Through Chris’ hard work a
couple of years ago, we now have a
fairly complete list of graduate
brother’s contact information. One
thing that surprised me is that there
were many more people in the general area
than I realized. This being said, we could
always use more involvement from the
graduates. The Chapter is moving in the
right direction now, but it requires constant
attention and guidance to stay on course.
Also the Castle, like us, is not as young as it
used to be and has a lot of the aches and
pains that come with getting older. The more
hands that are around, the easier it will be
when the undergrads have some issue that
If you come every year, pick up the
phone and call someone from your
era that maybe you haven’t spoken
with in a while and convince them
to come with you. If you haven’t
been to Pig Dinner in a while, or
ever, please consider coming and
bring one of your pledge brothers or
someone from your era with you.
When you arrive at the castle, you
will see some changes, but there
will be enough familiar
sights and smells to
transport you back in
time when you arrive,
and make you glad you
came. Hope to see all of
you there.
Fraternally,
Scott M. Carson

requires help from the BCA and the more
resources the Housing Corporation will have
to draw from when the Castle requires a little
TLC. Another reason to get and stay
involved is showing the undergrads strong
support from the BCA reinforces the fact the
FIJI is “not for college days alone” and sets a
great example of what is expected of graduates when they leave school, thus helping to
perpetuate a strong graduate BCA.
I’m sure it’s mentioned several
times in this issue of the PTF, but be sure to
put April 25th on your calendar. This is the
date of the 2009 Norris Pig Dinner. I’m
looking forward to seeing all of you there,
especially you guys from the early and mid
90’s. I think we were outnumbered by the
guys from the 70’s last year, and I want to
change that.
