FIJI Parents’ Newsletter Fall Update – 2010 Hello everyone, This fall edition of the newsletter brings you information about our fall recruitment, brotherhood events we did as a house, service activities, and intramural accomplishments. FIJIs Build a Playground As dawn was breaking in Champaign, 16 Chi Iota FIJIs headed out to do some good for the community. They joined a large group of volunteers whose mission was to build a playground. Starting with a bare yard, a heap of materials, and 160 cubic yards of mulch, these men helped to create (in their humble opinion) the best playground in the county. Our jobs included mixing and pouring cement as well as spreading out the huge pile of mulch. It was an exhausting day but they were happy to have accomplished so much for the community. Park before The finished product FIJI Frightfest Throughout the week of October 25th, FIJI will be hosting their 3rd annual philanthropy event: FIJI Frightfest. All proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross. We will have 3 events: a pumpkin carving contest, a costume dodgeball tournament, and a pasta dinner. \r\nFall Recruitment This fall we had welcomed 24 new gentlemen-of-quality into its ranks. We are very excited for this semester and we cannot wait to see what the Mu Class can do! Other Noteworthy News This semester we are having a scholarship competition with a sorority on campus, Simga Kappa. We meet with them as a house once a month to study together. The house with the most improved GPA will be awarded with an ice cream party from the losing house. This is a creative way for us to improve academics and maintain good relations with sororities. FIJI has 2 intramural football teams this semester. Currently, our A team is undefeated (3-0) and our B team had suffered only one loss with a record of (2-1). We have done a lot of brotherhood events as a house together. We have weekly competitions on Fridays ranging from four square, basketball, volleyball, bags, and ping pong, among others. Dad’s Weekend is November 12-14th. After the Illini football team defeats Minnesota on Saturday, we will be having a barbeque for all the fathers. More information will be available soon.
