2010 February E-Newsletter Lambda Omega (University of Western Ontario)
February 2010 — 3% Edition
Graduate and Colony Brothers at the annual Lambda Omega Frank Norris Pig Dinner!
\r\nThis 2010 year has started off with a bang for FIJI
sports and the plan for the rest of the year is to
keep the ball rolling. With the recently formed FIJI
intramural football team and the amazing event
that took place on Superbowl Sunday, it seems as
though only the sky is the limit for Phi Gamma
Delta sports. Our recently formed football team
has started off slow as we are currently 0-2, but
with the resilient FUl squad that we have
established, the playoffs are still in sight and the
ultimate prize is still up for the taking. Even more
: so, the team has allowed for a stronger and more
5 - = = unified group of brothers. In addition to the newly
acquired team, a greatly ianned and successful event was held by our President, Jeff Erasmus, who has
really aided in allowing FIJI sports to prosper and flourish. In all, the first two months to the New Year
for FIJI has been extremely exhilarating and has also been a bonding experience for all the gentlemen
involved. The plan for the rest of the year is to keep up the superior enthusiasm.

Social:
The brothers of Phi Gamma Delta excel academically,
philanthropically, financially and also socially. The
brothers are always having events and mixers with the
sororities on the UWO campus. Recently and in the past,
Colony Brothers have held events with the beautiful
ladies of Alpha Gamma Delta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Alpha
Phi and Pi Beta Phi. The Colony Brothers are always
respectful of the sororities on campus and never forget
to celebrate their Founder’s Days’ with chocolates and
roses. We hope to continue this in the future!
\r\nPig Dinner:
On Saturday February 6", 2010 our Colony had the
opportunity to host our first ever Frank Norris Pig Dinner.
The dinner, which has been annually run by Graduate
Brothers since the closing of the Chapter in 2004 was
colony run and was an absolute success. We had an
amazing turn out and about 30 Graduate Brothers were
able to attend the unforgettable evening. We were able to
raise a large sum of money through our 50/50 draw as well
as through the auctioning off of the Pig Head for both our Graduate Relations and Chartering fund. The
hight started off with our MC for the night, Scott Peters who welcomed everyone to the amazing
evening and announced the bringing in of the pig, which was brought out by our Fall 2009 Pledge Class.
Two of our very own Colony Brothers Jimmy Vaiopoulos and Jeff McAllister, continued the evening and
perfectly executed the famous Exile’s Toast. Based on the goal of raising $1100.00 for the Pig Head,
Colony Brother Chris Fields agreed to eat the brain. The goal was met, and the promise was kept
Following some delicious Pig, Colony President Jeff Erasmus gave a speech to update the Graduate
Brothers on how we are doing financially, academically, socially and philanthropically. To which the
Graduate Brothers responded with a loud round of snaps. The Graduate Brothers recognized that 16 of
our Colony Brothers have attained the AAA scholarship and allowed for a moment of applause to those
who have exceeded academically. After dinner and a few photos, everyone met up at Barneys Lounge to
celebrate the successful night. Special thanks go out to Scott Truman (Pig Dinner Chairman) for all of his
hard work and also to all of the Graduate Brothers who attended this evening.
\r\nMessage from Winter 2010 Pledge Class President:
As the President of the Winter 2010/ Gamma
Pledge Class, when | was first asked to write about
my thoughts on FIJI so far, | had trouble deciding on
where to start. Over the last month, the pledges
and | went through a lot of amazing experiences. |
was one of the last pledges to receive a bid, and at
first, | felt intimidated by how many brothers | was
meeting on a daily basis and how committed they
all were to the fraternity. But throughout all the
events, | never once felt like | didn’t belong, didn’t
fit, or didn’t have a future with the fraternity. Even
when | sat down and chewed off a pig’s foot at the alumni dinner, all of the brothers were there with
support.
And that’s the main thing that distinguishes Phi Gamma Delta from any other fraternity on
campus: the sense of brotherhood, support, and friendship. It’s those values that make us better than
any of us can be on our own. And it’s those values that make me personally want to ensure that not only
my pledge class, but all future brothers at FIJI can thrive and get an even better experience. In the end, a
fraternity is about the people, and from all the Graduate Brothers and Colony Brothers that we have
met over the last month, | can’t even begin to think of a better group of people that | would want to go
through this experience with. Right now, that leaves me with only one concern that I’m worried about:
having to eat the pig’s brains at the alumni dinner 30 years from now. But we’ll overcome that when we
get to it.

Philanthropy Event:
The Lambda Omega Colony has been organizing our largest
CANADIAN MENTAL philanthropy/fundraising event of the year. For this event the
HEALTH ASSOCIATION brothers will be camping out in Victoria Park for 24-hours on
Friday March 26" 2010, in the hopes of gaining major
ASSOCIATION CANADIENNE attention from the community and raising money for charity.
POURLA SANTE NENTALE The charity that will be receiving the majority of the event’s
proceeds will be the Canadian Mental Health Association,
This event means a lot to the brothers as it will be held in honour of Austen Berlet, a beloved brother of
the colony who passed away last summer. Our hopes are to raise upwards of $20,000 with this event,
and to continue this event each year in order to properly honour Austen.
We are asking anyone who is interested in being involved in this event to contact us for donation forms.
Teams are also welcome and are encouraged to join us at the event to compete in several competitions
that will be held throughout the 24-hours. BBQs and hot chocolate stands will be setup throughout the
event for food and to raise more money for charity.
Any graduate help for this event is welcome and greatly appreciated, including: donations, event setup,
lighting contribution or even just coming out to support the brothers on the event day._All donations
over $10 will be tax deductable. If you would like to make a donation to this event or are interested in
receiving more information, please contact Patrick Valdis at pat_valdis@yahoo.ca or by phone at 519-

\r\nFinal Message/ Call to Action:
Last month’s edition of the Lambda Omega E-Newsletter
asked any Graduate Brother to share stories from their time
in the beautiful Phi Gamma Delta house on Wellington.
Unfortunately no one sent in any stories or photos, so we
are asking again. Please share with us an experience you
had during your time in FUI, or send us pictures of you and
the rest of the FUJI brother’s during your time in FIJI and we
will be sure to include them in next month’s edition of the
e-newsletter. Know any brother who recently got married?
ls anybody’s Birthday coming up? Want to send a shout-out
to a long lost brother? Have an announcement or anything you want to include in next month’s edition?
If so, let us know and we will try to make it happen. E-mail me at balfaro@uwo.ca.
