CHAPTER OF PHI GAMMA DELTA - UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
@ »
The Brothers of the Omicron Chapter of
Phi Gamma Delta returned to 128 Madison
after the summer for one of the most pos se-
‘é Pa oc y : % mesters in recent memory.
+e a Omicron received several chapter and in-
a yt adh, dividual awards last spring, and we were proud
(ae Z tH to continue our strong traditions of scholar-
wl 19S C OMe ship and service in the fall. Our chapter GPA
ya = - AN x - remains above the All-Male and All-Greek av-
> me + . aS we f erages, and the brotherhood totaled over 1000
-~ He) bs eer hours of community service this semester. Our
So ASA RY incramurals have remained strong, reaching the fi
r %® Ab aS nals in outdoor soccer and taking home the fraternity
league championship in floor hockey. The 7th Annual
Run Across Virginia (pictured below) brought in over
$41,781.56 for the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Re-
search — the most successful Run in recent memory. Our fall
recruitment brought us four new pledges who we hope to see
develop into strong Brothers.
Brothers continue to remain highly involved in a va-
riety of activities and clubs around grounds. Four broth-
ers compete for the nationally-ranked Virginia Men’s Club
Soccer Team. The Chapter also has Brothers playing on

the club tennis team. Three Brothers hold
positions on the Honor committee, and
several brothers participate in ‘Hoo Crew
(the official student fan group of Virginia
Athletics) and Flags of the ACC — both
groups that were founded by recent Fijis.
Several other Brothers participate in and
lead the Greek Intervarsity Fellowship on
Grounds.
Pig Dinner brought over 30 graduates,
50 undergraduates and their guests to
Sugarleaf Vineyards in early October, and
the event was highlighted by the presence
of Brother Corky Shackelford, UVA Class
of 1951, and his lovely wife. We look for-
ward to seeing as many of you as possible
in the Hook this upcoming semester, and
please stop by the Temple anytime you
find yourself around Mr. Jefferson’s Uni-
versity.

Randy Coupland III (42) is sorry to see
only 14 donors prior to class of 1970. He
just turned 92 on 9/29/09 and is as or-
nery as ever. While living at the “Forest
at Duke” retirement center in Durham
this year, he attended all the Duke bas-
ketball and football games plus other
sports. He hopes to come up to UVa this
fall or spring - looking forward to seeing
Phi Gam house and the Fiji members!

\r\nSTATE OF THE UVA
GREEK SYSTEM
‘The fall 2009 semester saw two Greek houses leave Grounds
as Alpha Epsilon Pi and Sigma Phi Epsilon both had their char-
ters revoked by their respective national fraternities. It’s unfor-
tunate to see chapters fold at the University as it weakens the
Greek system as a whole. Despite the loss of these two chapters,
we're excited to welcome colonies for Pi Lambda Phi and Beta
Theta Pi back to Grounds. Beta has been busy since re-coloniz-
ing. The Beta chapter bought back their old house on Rugby
Road from Delta Upsilon, allowing DU to build a new house at
the end of Madison Lane. The new DU house will be the first
new fraternity house built at UVA in 50 years. Even with the
loss of two chapters, the fraternity system continues to thrive,
and Omicron Fiji is proud to be at the forefront.
