It Seems Like Yesterday
By James Taylor (Kansas State 1970)
Ithas been 50years, butnny fondest memory is ofmy
chapter's chartering weekend. The formal ceremony, wearing
a tuxedo and hosting a dinner which honored our hard work,
was then capped off with a dance. For a Kansas farm boy, this
made quite the impression!
I chuckle to myself now. What were we thinking? Starting a
new fraternity at Kansas State? It was a leap of faith, but we
hod help from other chapters and graduates in the area. Little
did I realize that Kansos State and Phi Gamma Delta would
take a naive teenager and give him opportunities he did not
know existed, and the self-confidence to set and achieve goals.
My Phi Gam experience taught me how to lead as Iserved as
corresponding secretary and as president for two terms.
Iassisted in the purchase, renovation and management of a
chapter house, with a significant budget. Those Fiji lessons have
served me well in life.
I recently attended my Chapter's 50th Pig Dinner where over
300 brothers were in attendance. It spoke to me that although Fiji
and the fraternity system in general face challenges, we remain
strong and will be so in the future. We are fortunate to have
outstanding and consistent leadership on both the international
and local advisor levels. As Bill Martin said in his Pig Dinner
address, unfortunately sometimes chapters close for a short time,
but Phi Gamma Delta will always be here, to help in their return.
Igraduated during the Vietnam War and became a Naval
Officer serving 3'A years. I worked for Hartford Insurance for
25 years and then eight years with North American Risk Services,
retiring as president. Barbara and I have been married for 40
years and have two adult sons. I am active in the Friends of the
Library and raise money to support underfunded programs. I also
volunteer at the local Chamber of Commerce and I build, repair
and keep stocked 12 "Little Free Libraries" located around the city
of Safety Harbor, Florida.
I have always believed in giving back to the institutions that
shaped and supported me. That is why Kansas State and Phi
Gamma Delta are right at the top of my list. Both ore included in
my estate plan. It is my way of saying "thank you" for the skills
they taught me and for the lifelong friends they gave me.

Your Planned Gift Helps Us
Prepare for the Future
Planningfor tfie future is alwaysagood idea, no matter
wfiere you are in life. Phi Gamma Delta relies on the
foresight of those who include a gift to the Phi Gamma
Delta Educational Foundation in their financial or estate plans.
These planned gifts can be made now to immediately support
our brothers, or they can take effect in the future as a final way
to leave your legacy.
Depending on the gift arrangement you choose, you con:
• Feel secure about the future of your loved ones.
• Maintain control of your assets for life.
• Receive tax benefits.
• Give more than you ever thought possible.
Here are o few popular planned giving options;
Gift of appreciated securities. If you've owned stock
for more than a /ear, and it's increased in value, you may
donate the stock directly to us. You may receive an income tax
charitable deduction for the full fair market value of your gift
when you itemize and eliminate capital gains tax.
Gift in your will or revocable living trust. This can be
as simple as including a sentence in your will or living trust.
Because this gift doesn't go into effect until after your lifetime,
your current budget isn't affected, and you can change your
mind at any time.
Gift of retirement plan assets. By naming the Phi Gamma
Delta Educational Foundation as the primary beneficiary on
the beneficiary designation form for a percentage (1-100)
of your account's final value, you can make a tax-wise gift to
support Phi Gamma Delta after your lifetime.
\r\niS to Update Your
u
Will or Living Trust
Naming the individuals and charities thatwil receive
your assets after your lifetime can be a simple process,
with most assets passing by the terms in your will. But
if you would like to update or change your will, what should you
do? The process is actually easier than you might think and con
be done in a few quick steps.
Locate a copy of your current will. Pull out the copy of
"
your will you hove filed owoy at home. If you can't find it,
stop by your estate planning attorney's office and request a
copy of your existing will or contact the office and have one
sent to you.
Mark what you would like to change. Look over your
^
current will and determine if you've experienced any life
changes—such as a death or birth in the family, a move
or a change in net worth—that would affect your current
plan. If you wont to remember the causes closest to your
heart, decide if you would like to moke o gift of cosh, real
estate or other property. Another popular way is to give us
a percentage of your estate after other gift Intentions to your
loved ones hove been fulfilled.
Meet with your estate planning attorney. Do not
^
attempt to change your will on your own. If you do, you
may well Invite an expensive will contest. This is the job of
your estate planning attorney—to help you properly moke
changes to your will through a codicil. This document Is
a formal amendment that allows you to moke additions or
changes to your original will.
