FIJIS WIN ALL-AROUND SPORTS TODAY—
3rd TIME IN 4 YEARS
The Fijis of California won the university AilAround Sports Trophy rahter handily last year, making

remains almost entirely intact for the upcoming sea
son. With the season arriving soon, it seems that we will
once again contend for the crown. If the fall practice
sessions on our court are any indication, we are due for
further success. With Clark Porter leading the team
from the point, and with Bubba, Dave, and the Captain
across the front line it will be an enjoyable season.
The Fiji Softball team dominated the spring
intramural scene once again, for what is regarded by
campus observers as one of the greatest dynasties in
recent history at Berkeley. Unfortunately, our hopes
for yet another IM crown were dashed at the hands of a
team we had already beaten. Even though we lost the
IM championship game in the finals, we rebounded to
take the IFC championship once again, 22-1,in agame
that clearly expressed what Fiji Softball is all about.
This year's team returns 8 of 10 starters, and figures to
day and the quarterbacking of Henry Matthiessen.
Picture the lad, wavy blonde hair blowing in the
breeze, playing volleyball, when the cry goes out.
Surf's Up! He drops the volleyball, reaches for his surf
board and it's time to once again conquer the great
whitecaps of the Pacific. To see these jovial carefree
young fellows talk of almighty "So Cal," it's so typical
of Nell "Dyke" Purdy to proclaim the Bongo waves are
narly. "It's so neat being here near the beach, makes
me feel glad to be alive."
To the cultured men of the Bay Area,"So Cal"s at
best an encounter parlor of plasticity, lacking in the
refinements that men of characcter appreciate. These

Of course Northern California has its beaches, but
to John Winans from Half Moon Bay, it's a place to
consider the more esoteric things in life and look at the
more intense "city life" with a "Dip and a Coors."
To the Fijis of Fresno, Bakersfield, and Lake

get together and play softball.
Fiji football this fall at CAL is looking very bright as
both the A's and the B's (Horned Owls) won their
respective leagues and are in the playoffs. Behind the
quarterbacking of Lance "Coach" Cossey, and the
gifted receiving-of Jeff Ames, the Fijis have dominated
opponents and are the Number 1 seed in the playoffs.

President's Address
Brothers,
Right now the Deiti Xi chapter is very strong with
our total membership just over 50 brothers. The unity
and overall tone of the chapter is the best I have seen in
recent years. With 40 brothers living in, the Phi Gam
lodge is completely full and a lively place to be.
I would like to thank all those who sent rush recom

House Manager's Report
As a result of intensive rennovation efforts, our
noble Fiji abode once again boasts of charming char
acter. Over the summer, the Housing corporation
spent endless hours and infinite dollars on needed
improvements such as: a new bar floor, refinishing
hardwood floors, installing railing around oursundeck
and many miscellaneous repairs. While all these
improvements were gratifying, it seems that the new
bar floor generated the most enthusiasm. In fact, we
went as far as to make a few improvements of our own.
As much as we admired our new bar floor, we just
couldn't help but to cover a small portion of our floor
with a new pool table.
Among other triviality, this year the office of House
Manager has been divided into two equal authorities.
Through the use of this system we hope to displace
some of the work load thus reducing the time factor
Treasurer's Report
From a financial standpoint. Delta Xi is doing
exceptionally well. The chapter has instituted some
attractive benefits to those brothers who are willing to
pay their housebills quarterly or annually. Those
brothers who took advantage of this opportunity also
gave the chapter the financial stability we have been
seeking to achieve for some time. Bad debits from last
year were at the lowest level in four years, and the few
brothers in arrears are on a payment schedule. My
personal thanks goes to our financial adviser, John
Linderoth (Northwestern), for his assistance in setting
up our annual budget.

involved in repair work. So far everything seems to be
going great.

Note from the Editor
The beginning of the new school year brought a
Morris Fiji
strong pledge class, new bar floor and the reactivation
of our Board of Chapter Advisers (BCA). I am pleased
with their active participation and welcome input from
any brothers as we are also trying to establish a
stronger graduate brothers program. This will hope
fully include a cocktail party and maybe a crab feed in
the Spring. The newsletter is stronger than ever, get
ting support from all in the house. Finally, to enhance
the publication further, I ask your support by filling out
the questionnaire and send itbacktothe Lodge.Thank
you.
We are happy to produce this newsletter for our
graduate brothers, family and friends.
