FIJI ACADEMY
ii.
The 17th Fiji Academy, held this past summer, proved
to be exciting and beneficial to Sigma Mu chapter at
Mississippi State. The seven undergraduate and three
graduate brothers attending the leadership convention
from Sigma Mu were indeed honored to represent their
chapter which captured the Cheney Cup for the second
year in a row. Every brother of this chapter - both
graduate and undergraduate - is, in part, responsible for
Sigma Mu receiving this most prestigious award of The
Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta.
This 17th leadership school, conducted by Phi Gam
ma Delta, was held August 9-13 at Ohio State University
in Columbus, Ohio. Executive Director/Editor William S.
"Bill" Zerman opened the convocation on Sunday evening.
William R. Nester, Vice-President for Student Affairs at
Ohio State, and Joseph B. Carney, Archon President, pro
ceeded with their respective welcomes to Ohio State
University and to the 17th Fiji Academy. The theme of the
convention, "Phi Gamma Delta - Meeting the Challenges
of the 80's", was then introduced with Robert T. "Sonny"
Davis(Texas '52) conducting. Brother Davis, Director and
President of the National Leadership Institute, held
meetings throughout the week on "Leadership Training
Methods".
Sigma Mu received the Archon's Trophy at the
Awards Luncheon on Tuesday. Master of Ceremonies for
the luncheon was Kenneth A. Harris (Michigan '82). The
Archon's Trophy is given for outstanding involvement in
extracurricular activities. Each undergraduate member's
involvement on campus culminated in the winning of this
award. Also at this Awards Luncheon, Sigma Mu placed
second in the Baker Social Service Cup and third in the
Brightman Trophy. These awards are for outstanding
social service, religious, and ethical activities and for
outstanding graduate relations, respectively.
On Tuesday night, t^ie delegates were in for perhaps
the most exciting event of the week. The 17th Fiji Academy
Norris Pig Dinner was held in the Ohio Union East
Ballroom with Michael E. Hagarty (Western Ontario '80)
as Master of Ceremonies. It was at this dinner that Sigma
Mu was again awarded the Cheney Cup for being the most
efficient chapter in the conduct of its affairs.
The final award received by the chapter was given at
the Scholarship Awards Luncheon on Wednesday. Sigma
Mu was recognized for maintaining a grade point average
above the All-Mens average for every semester in its
twelve years of existence at Mississippi State University.
The success enjoyed at Fiji Academy was a great
motivating factor"leading Sigma Mu into another semester
of devoting its attention to leadership, scholarship, ser
vice, social and intramural programs in the unending quest
"toward excellence". We would again like to express our
gratitude to the graduates of this chapter for laying the
foundation upon which we were able to build in attaining
these awards.

Sigma Mu has had an active social calendar this fall
giving the brothers time to set aside scholarly activities and
relax. This has been made possible by the planning of
Mark McDonald ('83), social chairman.
The first party held was the Champagne Party
celebrating the new addition of an excellent pledge class.
