The year at Chi lota has gotten off to
an excellent start. Fiji Island was a
tremendous success with everyone
enjoying themselves as only a Phi
Gam can. The next event of the fall
was fraternity rush. This fall we made
a good showing pledging six more
young men which brings the number In
our fall pledge class to 16 and raises
the number living In the house to 64.

season opens Sept. 19 against
Syracuse, followed by games against
Minnesota Oct. 3 (Dad's Day), Oct. 24
against Wisconsin (Homecoming),
Iowa on Oct. 31, and the season closes
out against Indiana Nov. 14 (Pork Day).
We look forward to seeing two FIjis,
#55 Adam Lingner '83 (center) and #64
Tory Daugherty '83 (tackle) playing this
year. Under the direction of head
coach Mike White, this year's team

Brothers,
The Lovejoy Library is finally com
pleted. The Lovejoy Library was the
brainstorm of Mort Leach (Class of
'53). It is our attempt to rekindle the
history of Chi lota.
The design of the Lovejoy Library
is in keeping with the Georgian
architecture of the building (Chi lota
was rebuilt in 1964). It was designed
by Terri Carr and was furnished by
Ethan Allen and is breathtaking, to
say the least.
For those of you who don't know,
Ernie
Lovejoy
was
an
Archon
counselor for the fraternity of Phi
Gamma Delta in 1956-57. He was a
major force in the early '50s in
leadership in the house and it is
indeed a pleasure for the brothers of
the '80s to celebrate a brother who
contributed so much.

Six Brothers Attend Leadership Academy
From August 9-13, we attended the
17th Fiji Academy at Ohio State
University with our Purple Legionnaire,
Clay Barnard.
This year's Academy had sessions
on leadership, rush methods, graduate
relations and financial problems.
Clay taught a seminar on Career
Development in which he explained his
Paraprofessional Career Consultant
Program — a new idea for the Fra
International
Brotherhood
of
Phi
Gamma Delta. We realized that Fiji
means more than Chi lota—our
brotherhood extends across the U.S.
and into Canada. After making many
friends in the short time we were there,
we can truly say, "We are mighty proud
to be Fiji's."

long bout with cancer. George had

days. He was active, alert and vital,

Merrill was a campus leader, a fine
man, a credit to Phi Gamma Delta, the
best tennis player In school. He was
also a member of T.N.E., a sub-rosa
group that exercised a good deal of
control in campus politics and ac
tivities. Only a few 1924 Phi Gams are
still around.
Dad was an active member of the
Chi lota Chapter, graduating in the
Class of 1912 and remaining active in
the Chapter in a number of capacities
long after his graduation. He was a
first string letterman for three years
with the iiiinois football team, and, as
an end and kicker, was known as the
"fastest man before Red Grange."
His background in industrial filtra
tion led him to found Everpure, inc.,
which manufactures specialty water
treatment equpment, and in 1967
merged that company into Cuiligan In

together and . . . every day after lunch
they gathered at the piano and
demonstrated their musical talents for
the rest of the House to enjoy. Thus
"Jazz" Whitney received his nickname.
This same trio performed at the
1981 Fiji Outing dinner held at the
Champaign Country Club. And when
the dinner was brought to a close, all
assembled at the Chapter House for
more socializing and a tour which
included the newly refurbished Lovejoy
Library. The group was not to leave,
though, prior to a performance by the
jazz trio
