installations are iust the beginning of an overall
thrust to upgrade the bathroom facilities in the
House. Other plans for this project include refinishing
the bathroom walls and floors. The total cost for
bathroom improvements to date is about $1300.
Other improvements to the House include a new
basketball backboard, a new roof on our storage
shed, new drapes, the application of about ten
gallons of paint to various parts of the Hous€, and
additions to the Formal Gard€r, where our pledge
star is located.
Future plans include replacing the kitchen floor,
installation of a ceiling and a block wall in the "pit"
area of the basement, the refinishing of the hardwood
floors, and the planting of shrubs and foliage in the
Formal GardeJt.
ln all, House maintenance and capital improvement projects have gone according to schedule
while staying well within the limits of the budget.

PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear Brothers,
These are two of the new showers recently installed
in the House, poil of an overall effort to upgrade our
bathroom lacilities.
FIJIS WORK TO IMPROVE HOUSE
lmprovements to the Rho Phi House this Fall
have included some major capital expenditures. The
most substantial of these is the installation of four
new shower units in the upstairs bathrooms. These
Well, it's Fall, and that means "Rush Season" to
all past and one lonely present Rush Chairmen. So it
follows that intramurals, committees, and the
"Omnipotent lnstitute" keep the coffee pots perking
late here at Rho Phi. Although it's hectic, things are
going well.
After last Spring's performance of being FIRST
on campus for quarter and cumulative GPA's, and
being the only fraternity above the All-Men's Average,
the Ghapter is working hard for a repeat. Thanks to
the efforts of Dave "Narc" Myers (CE '741, Purple
Legionnaire, and Blair Hughes (CH '80), BCA Scholarship Chairman, graduates are pooling their resources
for a Graduate Gift in case of a re-run during the
"Crunch of Fall Quarter." Also, Narc has made an

extra contribution to be put towards the "First TriAnnual FlJl Majors Wars." This year's field is headed
by the heavily favored, first-seeded ME's, {ollowed by
the EE's, Givils, and the underdog Chem, E's.(A huge
attaboy for the participating Grads and the efforts of
Scholarship Chairman Tim Brown.) With a little luck,
Rho Phi can enjoy its first scholastically successful
Fall Quarter in a few years.
A couple of big events also have made this an
interesting quarter. Brother Timo McGrath (CE '80)
took as his bride Miss Jane Maxwell on October 3,
1981, here in beautiful T':H. The Brothers were in
force to wish Tim the best of luck on the end. . . I
mean beginning of his new life. Graduates were well
represented, and the weekend was full of excitement.
Of course, the highlight of the weekend was the 9:00
a.m. work session called by House Manager Perry
Stephens that morning. (He's so heartless!) On
Sunday, October 4, 1981, (yes, this is still the same
weekend) the Graduates were invited to attend the
lnitiation of Brothers Rich Klug, Jeff Johnson, Jeff
Clanton, and Conor McLeish.
Homecoming was on October 17th, ond again the
Graduate turnout was excellent. lt was another
weekend of stori€s, football, and Purple Passion,
and all present had a super time. Adding to this
weekend's excitement were the meetings of the BCA
and House Corporation, s gala pair in themselves.
Our last proiect of the quarter is Parents' Night
on November 14. Response thus far has been good,
and the Brothers are tuning up their talents for the
night's entertainment. Brother Pete Watson (ME '83),
Public Relations Chairman, has been hard at work to
organize yet another "First FlJl Annual."
All in all, you can see that our days are pretty
INSTITUTE NEWS
Rose-Hulman received some good news at the
beginning of this school year: the Olin Foundation
has decided to award a multi-million dollar grant to
the school to build a new classroom-laboratory
building on campus. The proiect includes entirely
remodeling and expanding facilities within Moench
Hall and adding new classrooms, offices, and labora-
tories in the new building. Olin Hall, as it will be
known, will be located directly across from Moench
Hall, between the library and the administration
building. ln addition to the coRstruction of this
facility, the road and parking system of the lnstitute
will be reworked and expanded. The ceremonial
ground-breaking took place at Homecoming for this
large proiect, and full-scale construction will
commence soon.

GRADUATE NEWS
Graduate news has perhaps been a bit sparse
over this past quarter. Some noteworthy items,
however, have been received concerning current
events in the lives of Rho Phi Grads. Here are some
of the things which have been happening:
Ed Fain ('76) and his wife Vicki have a recent
addition to their family, Stephen Elliott Fain. Ed has
been promoted to Account Manager with Perfect
Circle Division, Dana Gorporation.
Jeff Wells ('79) has also received word of a.promotion and will be moving to Chicago sometime in
the near future.
Gerry Dail ('78) is proud to announce that he and
his wife Barb are due to be parents sometime on or
around January 22, 1982.
News has also been received that Jeff Hearn has
passed the bar exam.
The obvious closing note to this article is a request to all of you graduates out there leading
exciting, fast-paced lives in the real world. Please
send any news about yourself, your family, or your
job that you would like to share with the rest of the
Chapter. This will be invaluable in helping the Rho
Phi Chapter keep up the high level of Graduate
contact it has enioyed in the past.

respectively.
SOCIAL HAPPENINGS
The Brothers of Rho phi kicked off a busy social
calendar with the famous DoubleWhammy weekend
the first week of school. The back to-back parties on
Friday and saturday were an excellent way to get
keyed for the upcoming parties during Rush.
Redneck Brothers were pleased with the theme
of our next party, "The south's Gonna Do It Agail-r.,,
The right mood was established by having plenty of
hay thrown about and cranking out a lot oi southern
rock-n-roll.
The old FlJl bathtub came out of retirement for
our next big bash, the Shaggy Moose party. Brewmasters Bruce Fleck (EE 'B2l and Howie Menser
(ME '84 insured that the closely guarded formula for
shaggy Moose was followed to the letter. A good
time was had by all, to say the least.
The next party featured the band ',Rage,, and lead
guitarist Dave "Narc" Myers (cE '741. while the band
had everyone in the living room dancirg, guests who
dared venture out to the garage were forced to ,,walk
the plank." This, of course, was the famed South Sea
lsland party. complete with a miniature ocean and
island scene, the party was a giant success. ,,Rage,,
deserves much of the credit for the great time everyone had.
The year's f irst batch of purple passion was
mixed up for the next weekerd, our long-awaited
Homecoming Party. Graduate turnout was very
strong as the Brothers, girlfriends, wives, and even
parents danced the night away.
After a brief respite for three-day weekerd, Rho
Phi kicked back into full swing with the annual ,,Beat
the Rush New Year's Eve Party" on Halloween. The
party was a roaring success and continued into the
wee hours of the morning. At the midnight hour,
several bottles of champagne were produced to
properly welcome in the New year. Some of the
Brothers tried their hands at the finer art of DJ-ing,
and the results were excellent.
The most recent party was the resurrected
Wedding Party. Bruce Fleck and Dave "Wop" Letteri
were joined in pseudo-matrimony by Father Frank H.
Gavrilos (ME '821. lt was a moving ceremory, and the
post-wedding party that ensued was another late one.
A guest appearance was also made by the pit
Room #2 Air Band. Members Paul Riley (EE '83), Brian
Connett (EE '83), and Scott Shaw (EE '83) gave their
rendition of "Roll Over Beethoven" to the frenzied
delight of thousands of screaming fans.
co
Dave Oakley and John O'Donnell (both CH '83) help
provide musical entertainment at our Annual "Beat the
Rush" Party.
