Dear Fiji Brothers:
We thought you would be interested in a status report on the new FIJI house — so here it is.
On September 16, seven sealed bids were opened, and the next day the low bidder at $309,000.00, Hundman
Construction, was verbally awarded the contract. After the ground breaking ceremony mentioned elsewhere in this
newsletter, construction started on Sept. 22. As of October 16 construction is well along, as seen in the accompanying
photos.
Money inherited from the Fort Estate is currently invested in a maximum yield CD (18.15%), and in other insured funds
paying about 17%. These monies give us adequate backing for our endeavors. The Fund Drive is still progressing.
Pledges continue to come in and now total $147,930.00, with $36,791.00 of same already paid.
The new tax bill makes contributions even more attractive in 1981. If Reagan (a Teke) can help us, how about you? We
will undoubtedly have to secure a mortgage from a local institution to cover us till all pledges are paid. How much we
borrow depends on your generosity. We know some of you didn't believe a house would ever be built. Now is the time to
lend support!
Contact me, or any member of the steering committee, ifyou have any questions. Remember, Phi Gamma Delta is not
for college days alone.
Fraternally,
Perge!
Jerry Philpott
Bloomington Graduate Chapter President
HOUSE PLANS CHANGE
In order to fit within our financial means the house
plans have been scaled down from 10,000 sq. ft. to
something over 8,000. We will be able to house 36
brothers which is more than adequate for the present
chapter. The design will allow usto easily expand the
dorm wing should the need arise.
The plan has living quarters for a house mother. We
are looking for one for next Fall. If anyofyou knowofa
qualified woman, please let us know.
1981 Installments on pledges are now due if not
i
already paid. If they are not received before the end of
Cctober we will besending reminder notices. Help us
avoid the extra postage.
The1981-82 schoolyearhas the largest chapterin a
number of years, with the house practically full.
Twenty-two are living in the house, and 23 are eating
there out of 27 total members. There are eight seniors
in the group.
Sports continues to be a dominate interest among our
members, but we see more and more participants in
other campus activities. Three of the four co-captains
of the football team are Fiji's, as is the wrestling team
captain. We are also represented well on the golf and
baseball teams and look to have some track team
members also this year.

\r\nHOUSE CONSTRUCTION UNDER WAY
September 21, 1981, saw the first spadeful, or in this
case bull dozer, of earth turned to highlight a ground
breaking ceremony for the new Chapter House.
It is to be noted that this will be the first Chapter House
built for our chapter. Both the house at 301 East
Chestnut (used from about 1920 to 1944) and the
present building at 317 East Chestnut were private
homes before purchased by us. The location of the
new building is the corner of Franklin and Kelsey,
immediately west of the stadium. Wesleyan has gra
ciously provided three lots for us, which leaves one
Numerous alums, and many members of the active
chapter (some unfortunately had classes) were pres
ent to see and participate in this long awaited event.
Ben Alsene, current chapter president, and Paul Jef
ferson '25, oldest Alpha Deuteron brother present,
helped run the big machine through the sod. Several
Wesleyan executives, including President Eckley at
large vacant lot between our site and the Teke house
to the north. We will face Franklin Avenue.
tended. All look forward to this fine addition to the
campus.
DID YOU KNOW
.. .That George Sperry'32 died this summer as a
result of injuries received in an auto accident?
George was one of our most industrious and
faithful brothers since his return to Illinois.
Besides working hard on our Fund Drive, he was
on the Board of Chapter Advisors for the new
Bradley Colony in Peoria.
dl
. .. That Warren Baker '41 is the Purple Legion
naire of the Bradley Coloney. They have a most
impressive group, in large part due to Warren's
mm
efforts. He was with them at Fiji Academy in
Columbus, Ohio, in August, and had more stay
ing power than any of the undergrads. But then
they say Warren always could outlast most of his
brothers.
. . . That Jewett Kepley '32 and his wife were
killed earlier this year in an auto accident near
their Oregon home. Jewett was that rare member
of our group — a real musician.
. . . That the deaths of Weldon Jones '28, Sam
Berg '32 and Dale Suttle '34 have now been
reported.
The House and Finance Committee, chaired by
Gerald Phllpott '59, is not very old, but has been
very busy. Including Shelton Leach '33, Don Wil-
lard '38, Jim Bicket, Kansas '38, Dan Gehrt '46,
Paul Belyea '57, Dr. Gary Johnson '71, and Chris
Nywiede, '73. This group is responsible for
approving the final house plan, for Investing
monies and arranging any needed financing.

In the months when we don't have special events such
as Homecoming or the annual steak fry with the
undergraduates, we will hold our regular third Friday
luncheons at Bob Johnson's Restaurant. The usual
notice will be sent to all Bloomington area brothers.
Reservations are not needed for this lunch. The first
one will be on November 20,1981. The Pig Dinner date
has not yet been set, but notice will go out as soon as it
Is. Finally, we will culminate our year as usual on May
15, 1982, during Wesleyan's Alumni Weekend, with
the husband and wife alumni steak fry in Aitken Rid
dle's backyard. Reserve that date now on your calen
dar. The classes of 1957, 1932, 1927, 1922, 1917 and
1912 will be specially honored.
Don't forget "matching gifts." If your employer does
match, secure the proper form and enclose it with
your check. We have had five orsix of these. You will
be credited for the total.
Somebody says the class of '42 want to honor Chet
Welterlund. If so, let's get those pleges in for a
worthy endeavor.
