NEW BROTHERS INITIATED
NEW INITIATES
This year we octivoted fifteen pledges into
the fraternity and had the best average of fresh
men making grades in many years. Only two
pledges failed to moke grades and we had one
pledge, Tim O'Keefe, achieve a 4.0 grade
point overage for his first semester.
Tim will
get financial compensation on his initiation fee
because of his performance. Mike Jenny was
our outstanding pledge and will have al l of his
octivotion fee paid by the house. Of interest
to all Phi Gams is the pledge class project: rais
ing the publishing fees of 80 Years of Lambda
Nu, which will update Lambda Nu history.

The Chapter has decided to undertake im
The first semester of the 1980-1981 school
year went by fast as they ail seem to do. We
emerged with fifteen fine new initiates and we
took giant steps toward making Lambda Nu the
best. With the new semester upon us, we ore
aiming at continuing these steps. The new
cabinet got off to a good start with a chapter
retreat, which took place in February. This re
treat, which was organized by the board of
chapter advisors, brought out many excellent
ideas and served as an inspiring force for al l
the members of the chapter. Concrete goals
included a new cost-efficiency committee, a re
vitalized Graduate Relations committee, and
many renovation plans; including new win
dows in the old-port of our structure, and reseeding the front yard.
With spring just around the corner. Pig Din
ner and Rush are on the minds of all the broth
ers. This years Pig Dinner promises to be big,
OS golfing and the Red-White game will be part
bathrooms in the old section of the House, to
be completed by next fall. This work and the
financial backing for it wil l be handled entirely
by the undergraduates. This will be an added
rush tool in hopes of filling the house to capac
ity with quality men in the up and coming new
school year.
WEDDING BELLS
Our chapter historian for 1980, Brian Jen
sen, was married January 3, 1981, to Karen

80 YEARS
The Lambda Nu Chapter, through
the work of a graduate brother and fund
raising projects of the 1980 pledge class
is producing a new history education
manual for its upcoming pledge classes.
Recently the history of the Lambda
Nu House has been presented to
pledges using a lecture method in which
the pledge trainer, using the enormously
outdated "50 years of Lambda Nu",
gives important history facts on our
house. This entitles the pledge to only
one week of study in this chapters his
tory.
The Active Chapter viewed this
method inadequate to thoroughly teach
the pledge about our house. Therefore
the chapter decided to update this book,
producing enough of the new edition so
each pledge can receive a Purple Pil
grim in addition to a new "80 Years of

Joy Motzke, a graduate brother cur

material for the book and is compiling it
for the final printing as soon as possible.
Head pledge trainer of 1980, John

The

they took was to clean the Bob Devoney

building, the other was staging all
campus parties with an attendance

meeting the $600 cost of publishing the
RUSH
Dear Graduates,
It is time once again for the under
graduate chapter to start gearing up for
rush. This year the signing date has
been moved up to the date after gradu
ation for high school seniors. So it will
be of the utmost importance for us to get
an early start on rush if we want to ful
fi ll our goal of pledging 35 outstanding
young men this summer.
If you have any rush recommenda
tions of high school seniors who would
make great Phi Gams please let me
know.

book.
Our chapter has taken a great step
to update the education of our pledges.
"80 Years of Lambda Nu", will enhance
our pledge training program, but we
must keep in mind new innovations for
the education of our pledges.

This semester. Lambda Nu Fijis had a lot to
look forward to on their social calendar. The
Fijis started the semester off with the second
annual Jefferson Duo Party. We followed that
party up with a Pajama party in which the
pajama clad party-goers watched cartoons and
comedy classics on viewing screen.
Next, we had a 50's party, involving the
Phi Delts, DG's, Kappas, Thetas, Phi Psi's, and
Chi Omegas. That was followed by a punk
rock party with the Phi Delts. Since then we
had a raquetball party with the AOPi's which
turned out to be a "smashing" success. We
still have Islander to look forward along with
other parties scattered throughout the year.

\r\nPhilanthropy Projects
The fal l semester of '80 was a time of work
and recognition for the Phi Gams of Lambda
Nu. The Nebraska Human Resources Research
Foundation displayed their appreciation for the
time and effort put forth by the chapter on the
600 hour pole sit last spring by awarding the
house with a beautiful plaque. Doctor Galen
Dodge and Michael Phillips were guests at din
ner on February 2 of this year to present the
chapter with the plaque and they commended
the chapter on their work done which greatly
benefited the foundations cause.

The $4200
dollars pledged was an endeavor well worth
the effort for such a great organization.
The yearly Halloween party for the under
privileged children of Lincoln took place last
fall. The Phi Gams haunted the halls as the
children trick or treated room to room. The
children later gathered in the dining room and
played gams with the Phi Gams and the ladies
of Kappa Alpha Theta.
The brothers went to work for a few after
noons for the people of Cerebral Palsy to help
relocate their office into another building. Ed
Siffring headed the moving crew which pro
duced positive results. After the back-breaking
work was over, the Phi Gams were treated to

all the pizza and beer they could eat and
drink by the Cerebral Palsy organization.
The main public relations activity of the
fall semester of 1980 was the Fiji-Hinky Dinky
Shopping Spree Raffle. The brothers of Lam
bda Nu sold chances on the spree for a one
dollar donation. The lucky winner. Barb Dupps
of Lincoln, was given two minutes to sprint
through the store and throw all the grocery
items she could into her cart. The activity was
definitely a sight to see. The brothers netted a
$3200 with the spree and all monies went to
the Nebraska Lupus Foundation.
Last semester the brothers of Lambda Nu
showed great initiative towards helping others.
Philanthropy activities are now in the planning
stages so we can make others paths more
pleasant and fruitful.
