SPRING 2018
2018 MAROONS BASKETBALL SEASON
On February 24, 2018, the men’s basketball team at University of
Chicago finished their season with an exhilarating win against the #2
ranked team in the country, Washington St. Louis. After losing at the
last second, to a game winning shot down in St. Louis, senior captains
Jake Fenlon (2018) and Collin Barthel (2018), and brothers of the
Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, led the Maroons to an exhilarating 86-77
win at home in front of a large percentage of current brothers. Also in
attendance were all 25 of the current spring pledge class. While it was
the last time the seniors would play at Ratner Athletic center, the impact
they had on the program will not be forgotten. Barthell and Fenlon
consistently propelled the team to victory, as Fenlon lead the team
in points over the entire season and Barthell provided the necessary
rebounding power and size on the block all season.
The game capped off a successful conference schedule, where they
went 9-5 against with key wins against Carnegie Mellon, Rochester and
Washington St. Louis. The team includes 12 Phi Gamma Delta brothers,
all of whom played significant playing time this season and contributed
to a extremely cohesive team environment. Success was also found on
the individual level, as Fenlon finished his career less than 50 points from being a 1,000 point scorer and establishing himself
as one of the best shooters in program history after breaking the career 3-point record. The four seniors, rounded out by Ryan
Shearmire (2018) and Porter Veach (2018), pledged the fraternity in 2014 and have spent the past four years together building
a special bond the rest of the team hopes to attain. All of them are confident in their future plans beyond graduation and are
appreciative of the impact the Fraternity has had on the team.
The junior and sophomore classes, the majority of whom belong to Phi Gamma Delta, hold similar bonds and are excited
to take the reins as upperclassmen on next year’s squad. Despite losing
the firepower the seniors brought, the juniors Noah Karras (2019), Ryan

\r\nCHI UPSILON MOURNS TWO OF ITS OWN
March was a sad month for the Chi Upsilon Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta, as we mourn the losses of brothers
Eugene Cruz-Uribe (1975) and Raymond Gadke (Knox 1964). Brother
Cruz-Uribe and Brother Gadke passed away at the ages of 65 and 74,
respectfully.
Brother Eugene “Gene” Cruz-Uribe was born on December 22, 1952 and
went on to receive his BA, MA, and PhD from the Oriental Institute here
at the University of Chicago. Regularly traveling to Egypt, Gene became
an expert in Egyptian graffiti. Gene used
his expertise throughout his career as a
professor at various universities before
settling at Indiana University East.
Brother Raymond “Ray” Gadke was
a staple at the University of Chicago’s
Regenstein Library. Ray was the reading rooms manager and would employ various
students to help him with his work who were known as “Ray’s Rangers.” Since Ray
was a graduate brother of Phi Gamma Delta, many of Ray’s Rangers have been, and
currently are, undergraduate brothers of the Chi Upsilon Chapter. Former Chapter
President Clyde Anderson (2018) was especially close with Ray and wanted to say that,
“Like many of you, I had the honor of working with Ray for my four years at UC. He
was my biggest mentor and the man I credit to the largest achievements I had over my
time as an undergraduate. He was one of my best friends I have ever had. Although his
passing has been difficult, his legacy in the lives he influenced will live on forever.”
Gene and Ray both leave behind a plethora of family members and loved ones, the entirety of the Chi Upsilon
Chapter included, that will continue to remember them as the fantastic men they were and celebrate the exceptional
lives they lived.

\r\nNEWLY INITIATED BROTHERS
This past fall, the Chi Upsilon Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta was
proud to welcome the twelve new brothers dubbed “The Dynamic
Dozen.” These brothers encompassed an incredibly diverse group
coming from not only all over the country, but the world as well.
Davis Kim (2021) is one of the dozen and comes to the University
of Chicago from Chappaqua, New York. Davis is an economics
major. Eisuke Tanioka (2021) joins the brotherhood all the way
from Tokyo, Japan. Eisuke is a current member of the University
of Chicago baseball team and speaks fluent Japanese. Next up is
Tanner Clark (2021), who plans to major in economics and is
originally from Carlsbad, California, just north of San Diego. Cole
Schmitz (2020) is the first sophomore in the class, and he was
elected pledge class president. Cole is from Madison, Wisconsin
and played important minutes on the school’s basketball team this past year. Coming to us from Lake Forest, Illinois,
just north of Chicago, is Teddy Donnelly (2021), a first year student majoring in computer science. Another newly
initiated brother is Turner Corbett (2021), who hails from Fort Worth, Texas. Turner is planning to major in public
policy. Michael Beninati (2021) is a first year student joining the FIJI brotherhood and originates from Greenwich,
Connecticut and is interested in the economics major at University of Chicago. From a similar region comes Joe
Burns (2021), who plays baseball at the University and is originally from New Rochelle, New York. Justin Drago
(2020) is another second-year joining the brotherhood and traveled from Peoria, Arizona to join the brotherhood.
Next up is Yahya Salih (2021), another addition to the FIJI brotherhood from right here in Chicago. The next
member of the “dynamic dozen” is Chris DiMuro (2021), a first year from Chester, New Jersey, who is considering
majoring in philosophy. Rounding out the 12 is Chibuike Nwachukwu (2021), who is also originally from Chicago.
All together, the 12 new brothers formed a special bond over their pledgeship, and we are all looking forward to
seeing how their unique personalities will have a positive influence on the Fraternity.
GRADUATE BROTHER UPDATE
Brock Appenzeller (2016)
Brock currently lives in Chicago and was recently promoted to Associate at American Street Capital. In his free time,
Brock said he has been “winning a couple basketball leagues throughout the city.” We are happy to hear that Brock has
been keeping the strong athletic tradition of Phi Gamma Delta alive and well!
Eddie Gianina (2017)
It was an incredible year for Brother Eddie Giannina who helped lead a defense for the Durham University
Saints which let up only 69 points over 9 games on the way to their first ever British Premier League National
Championship. Eddie is currently pursuing his MBA at Durham which is located in Northeast England. Eddie was
a starter and leader for the University of Chicago football team during his time here, and the Chi Upsilon Chapter
could not be more proud to hear his athletic prowess is translating incredibly well overseas.

\r\nSENIOR BROTHER INTERVIEWS
Andrew Beytagh (2018)
FIJI has given me the opportunity to be a part of a brotherhood much bigger than
me. Being around the older brothers on the football team as a freshman, it was an
easy decision to rush, and looking back, it was one of the best choices I have ever
made. From entering school as a 150-pound freshman to graduating as a captain of
the football team, I faced plenty of injury adversity that would have made it easy to
quit. Having the friendship and support of my fraternity brothers motivated me to
attack rehab to give myself the opportunity to get back onto the field with many of
my best friends.
Having the old house during my pledge process was an awesome resource for
guys from all the grades to have a place to come together. Being exposed to that
environment as a freshman made it an easy decision to live in the new house after
construction wrapped up. As a house manager, I take great pride in the house and
hope it’s around for 100 more years for the next generation of brothers to enjoy. I
know how much time and money went into making this house a reality, and the
time spent hanging out with the guys there has really made my senior year special.
As a soon-to-be alumnus of the University, I want younger brothers to reach out to me the way older brothers
have allowed me to do. The network within this fraternity is so tight, and I want to do everything I can to make it
easier for brothers to get internship and job opportunities in the future. I see FIJI as a place where men of different
backgrounds and pedigrees can grow together, and that should not come to an end after graduation. At the end of
the day, you do not have to be a square peg to fit into a square hole, and broadening your horizons both during your
time as an undergraduate and beyond is something that this chapter really prides itself on.
Matt Galloway (2018)
When I first came to the University of Chicago, I was intimidated by the institution’s prestige, but the academic
rigor also served to motivate me. I knew that coming to UChicago meant signing away many of the fun and carefree
years my friends would experience at state schools, but I also knew that I would grow much more than them in my
college experience. When I found FIJI, I utilized the transition of becoming a brother to sharpen my social skills,
and finding a group of guys with which I connected so seamlessly helped me
become more outgoing in all aspects of my social life. With this, college became
easier, and my newfound brothers became a support system which elevated me
higher than I could have reached on my own. The most important aspect of my
college experience was the relationships I gained, with the majority of them being
through FIJI; these relationships opened doors to career opportunities I could
have never found on my own. Becoming a more social person expanded my
interview capabilities, thus broadening my ability to form meaningful professional
relationships. As I make the transition into my professional life as a computer
scientist, I will always remember that my Fiji brothers will continue to be a
support system for me for the rest of my life. To all the future Fijis who are having
trouble choosing a major: computer science is one of the fastest growing fields,
and the industry is in dire need of new workers. The computer science major at
the University of Chicago is one of the best all-around programs for preparing the
student for a meaningful life and career, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to
anyone and everyone.

PHILANTHROPY UPDATE
This December, FIJI organized a holiday-themed philanthropy
event. Thanks to the guidance of brother Bryan Tisdale (2015)
and the effort of brother Patrick Rogers (2020), FIJI was able
to partner with the Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center to
provide stockings for almost 400 child victims of sexual assault.
The Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center (CCAC) provides
families and children, who have been victims of sexual abuse,
with resources to begin the healing process. Some of the most
important work they do includes providing children with a
safe space and mental health therapy. FIJI’s stocking donation
helped to brighten the holiday season for almost 400 hurting
children.
On Friday December 1, 2017, FIJI and Delta Gamma
(DG) gathered to prepare the stockings. They included
candy, coloring books, crayons, a stuffed animal and small
toiletries like toothpaste and chapstick. The event was a fun
combination of philanthropy and a holiday-themed mixer. The
undergraduate brothers and DG sisters came festively dressed
and listened to holiday music while preparing the stockings.
After the event, some brothers dropped the stockings off
at CCAC on the Southwest Side of the city. Unfortunately,
the CCAC’s Holiday Party took place over winter break, so
undergrads could not attend. However, representatives of the
Center were overjoyed by the donation and could not stress
enough how much the gift would mean to the many young,
underprivileged children.
6
The undergraduate brothers would like to thank everyone who
contributed to our fundraising campaign for this event. The
children of Chicago and the undergraduate community both
benefited from this experience, and FIJI hopes to maintain its
relationship with CCAC for future philanthropic work.
During winter quarter
this year, the Chapter
also participated in
the Mr. University
event hosted by
Kappa Alpha Theta.
Brothers worked to
put on an entertaining
Blue Man Groupstyle performance
for the show, and the
Chi Upsilon Chapter
raised over $20,000 for CASA, a charity dedicated to providing
legal representation to children in the foster care system.
Another upcoming philanthropy event is St. Baldrick’s expected
to be held May 19, 2018. This will be the second consecutive
year the Chi Upsilon Chapter is participating in the St. Baldrick’s
event, which raised over $4,800 last year. All proceeds for the
event benefit research for childhood cancers.
Please contact current Philanthropy Chair Tommy Moore
(2019) at tom.moore.c@gmail.com for more information
regarding charitable donations and participating in events.
