Vance Hall underwent extensive renovations this fall and is now in excellent condition. The highlight of the
renovation is the total remodeling of the downstairs' dining and party area. The first floor was also refurbished.
Pig Dinner was the projected completion date of the renovations. The date was met, and we hoped it provided
a pleasant homecoming for the graduates and their families.
The remodeled downstairs is the culmination of a job that began before last year's Pig Dinner. New doors,
windows, and paneling were put into the basement along with new floor tiles that were donated by Robert W.
Grubbs, Sr. Matching tables and chairs were also given to once again give Epsilon the most attractive dining party room on campus.
A fresh coat of paint was given to the first floor, and the foyer was retiled. Also the library received new fur
niture to replace the old vinyl couches that were once there. With the yard reseeded and the arboretum in near
original condition, Vance Hall is in the best shape it has been in ten years.
The excellent condition of Vance Hall can only be attributed to you, the graduate, and the tireless work of
Chuck Holderness, Billy Worsham, and the rest of the House Corporation. Thank you for helping us return
our house to the condition that has distinguished it for over fifty years.

Report
Our Spring semester at Epsilon began with the initia
tion of ten pledges. At present our chapter consists of
46 undergraduate brothers; 15 seniors, 13 juniors, 10
Upon taking office at the beginning of the spring
semester, the financial position of the house was very
sophomores and 8 freshmen.
As a goal set in the past, we are striving hard to cut
costs. At the present our budget is stable due to the ex
cellent management of our treasurer. Gee Smith. In ad
dition a new goal has been set by our cabinet, that is to
reduce our house bill. By being conscious of wasteful
spending, we intend to meet our goal.
Our cabinet has established other goals which are
aimed at improving the house. But let me begin by ex
pressing appreciation to the house corporation for all of
the hard work they put in during the fall raising money.
With the staining of the trim, the basement is now
completed. Other improvements to be made include
retiling of the left outside porch and putting up a new
iron railing. Not only will this enhance the looks of our
house, but will prevent any future accidents which
sad. The house now has 27 rent paying members;
however, we are assured of a strong fall rush and
hopefully next year the house will be at capacity.
Thanks to the fund-raising help of the house corp.
and the graduate brothers the renovation of the
downstairs' dining room and party room has been com
pleted without being a burden to the undergraduate
chapter. Also due to the excellent financial position of
the house at that time, we are looking forward to lower
ing the house bills for the first time in several years.
Even though the decrease will not be a substantial one,
it will be a relief from the semester to semester increases
we have experienced over the past few years. All in all
the house is experiencing prospering, financial times,
and happily we will continue to do so.
Fraternally yours.

shrubbery will be planted thus making the front of the
house more attractive.
Before closing, let me express thanks to all of you
who made Pig Dinner such a success. The turnout was
excellent and our speaker. Dean Smith, was quite
entertaining.
Also in mid January, the graduate chapter in Green
ville, N.C. held a meeting. Purple Legionaire, Dr.
Jerome C. Cashion, treasurer. Gee Smith and I attended
the dinner and meeting. For all of you involved, I take
this opportunity to recognize the enthusiasm of this
chapter and hope more like it will be formed.
We are pleased with the way things are going at Ep
silon. By all means, contact me if you have any ques
tions or suggestions. And we hope each of you will drop
by the house whenever possible.
Fraternally,
Curtis H. Hathaway, Jr.

Graduate brother contributions and dues are necessary to sustain it
and are sincerely appreciated. For this reason, Epsilon urges its
graduate brothers to aid the finances of their fraternity. At this time,
graduate brother news for this letter is also needed. Any such items
are encouraged to be submitted to the editors. This includes graduate
brother news, rush recommendations, address changes, and anything
else of interest to the Fijis.
\r\nHouse Manager's Report
The spring semester here at Epsilon began with
Vance Hall in excellent shape physically. With strong
financial support from the graduate brothers, we have
been able to continue many of the projects begun in the
fall. Downstairs renovations are complete, as the
pledges finished staining the trim during the
4
Pilgrimage. The pledges also did a good bit of
patching, painting and rebuilding during Pilgrimage.
With the onset of winter we have not been able to work
on many of the proposed projects, but a busy spring is
planned. One area of primary concern is the patio and
railing beside the president's room. Not only is it an
eyesore, but the bad condition of the hand rail is a
serious health hazard. Also the yard will receive atten
tion from the brothers. We plan to reseed the front yard
and repair the walk in the backyard next to the Deke
parking lot. New shrubbery in the beds in front of the
house will also improve house appearance. With con
tinued hard effort from the brothers and financial sup

Basketball has arrived on the intramural sport scene,
and Phi Gamma Delta is being represented by three
different teams. Curtis Hathaway, Julian Williamson,
and Michael Holder are captains of Fiji White, Fiji Pur
ple and Fiji One respectively. Figi White is led by Jim
Lilley, Paul Bitler, Jim Earnhardt, and Will Cox. They
only need one win to qualify for the play-offs, but the
injury to Curtis Hathaway will certainly make things a
little tougher. Fiji Purple is led by Eddie Boyles, John
Kerr, John Hogan, Julian Williamson, and freshman
Brad "Load" Herring. Fiji Purple also only needs one
win to qualify for post season play. Fiji One participates
in the Men's Recreation League and has received fine
play from Chip Williamson, Scott Johnson, Greg
Richardson, and Mike Flemming.
All teams are looking to put it all together for tourna
ment play.

to fellow brothers, and then answered many
questions from the terminally sports minded
brethren of Epsilon.
The festivities began when undergraduate as
well as graduate brothers met here at Vance Hall
for a Cocktail Party on Friday night. Saturday,
before the game, Vance Hall provided fried
chicken lunches to all, and then it was off to the
game. After the game everyone returned to the
Phi Gam house for some "pre meal partying."
A Few Words Before Dinner
This year's Norris Pig Dinner was held on
Homecoming Saturday, October 31 as the
Tarheels were unsuccessful in their effort with
the Terripans from Maryland. Although the
'Heels were unsuccessful, Norris Pig Dinner was
not -- Epsilon enjoyed one of its most successful
Pig Dinners in her history.
Brother Dean Smith (Kansas), Head Basket
ball Coach here at UNC, was the guest speaker.

\r\nPig Dinner A Huge Success
At 6:00 P.M. the annual pilgrimage was made
across the street and to the Carolina Inn. Over
one hundred graduate and undergraduate
brothers from all four corners of the country and
all different age groups assembled for appetizers,
Prime Rib dinner and dessert. While dining the
brothers savored the Prime Rib as well as the elo
quent speech by Dean Smith. Awards were then
given to the "Farthest Travelled" and "Oldest
Brother" in attendance. Next came the kissing
of the Pig, and then it was back to Vance Hall.

Upon their return graduate brothers were
greeted by their wives, who had been entertain
ing themselves at the Shogun Restaurant and an
"Epsilon Style" open bar.
We at Epsilon feel extremely fortunate to have
such a loyal and successful group of graduate
brothers who made this possible. Many thanks to
those who attended, and next year's Pig Dinner
""TWUfc.
(plans are in the making) should prove to be
equally as successful.

Junior Brooks Barwick, place kicker for the Tarheels,
Dear Brothers:
I am pleased to report that so far, we have raised almost
$20,000 of which we have received over $17,500 in
cash. Pledges are being paid when due in almost every
case. Thus, we expect to receive 99% of the $20,000.
However, our goal is to raise $35,000, and we only have
until June 30, 1983 to hit it. Therefore, I would like to
urge all of you who haven't given to please support Ep-
silon as we need YOUR help to reach our goal.

When President Reagan came to Raleigh in
November, Epsilon was ready to give the President a
hand. Sandy Abbott and Rob Grubbs served as drivers
in the motorcade while Henry Kidd, Bryon Kirkland,
Jim MacGill and Kevin Mertens acted as special security
assistants for Reagan's speech at the Civic Center.
