RUSH REPORT
Rush is currently in full swing for the Rho Phi
Chapter, and so far, our efforts have earned excellent
results. Jon Pelland (ME '85) is the 1983 Rush
Chairman with Brian Thonn (CM '85) serving as a very
capable assistant. Tne Rush committee also
includes Jim Luckiewicz (CE '84), Steve Davidson
(ME '86), Brad Kiess (ME '86), and Gary Winzenread
(EE '86). The entire chapter is doing a fine iob, and
enthusiasm is widespread. The freshman class
includes several outstanding men, and more than a
few sophomores have expressed an interest in our
f ratern ity
The rules governing fraternity rush remain as
before with a few exceptions. One important rule
allows that each fraternity be allowed only one rush
party per weekend. Also, freshman residence halls
are closed to fraternity men every Monday of the
quarter. The most drastic change in rush regulations
concerns extended periods of closed rush. These
periods include October 7-9 (Homecoming), Octgber
17-23, and November 14-23 (end of the quarter). Also
closed for the first time were the first two weeks of
the school year. The lnterfraternity Council declared
this period closed upon advice from the
11.
administration. The administration felt that absence
of rush during this important time of adiustment
might aid freshrnen. Plus, tack of rush during those
two weeks could only have a positive effect on the
grade-point averages of freshmen and fraternlty men
alike.
As far as Rho Phi is concerned, the rush outlook
is very good at this point. The informal parties were
wetl attended, and the chapter is anxiously awaiting
the first round of formal parties. Many factors have
aided the rush effort so tar. Fortunately, Rho Phi has
a good reputation on campus, and thisiact is serving
us very well. ln addition, our weekends'have been
highlighted by some spectacular parties. Themes
have been very popular. Every party has attracted a
large number of people. The "shaip Dressed Man"
party of October 14 was a great success as most of
the brothers and many of the f reshmenJported their
finest. The best party of the year to date was the
"South sea lsland" party of october 1st. Everything
went extremely well. Dave Letteri (ME '83) rated this
affair in the top three within his far-reaching
memory.
The rush maps have been distributed giving the
Rush committee another achievement. Over 1700 of
the two foot by three foot purple and white maps
were printed free of charge by a friend of the chapter.
on December 7th, Fiji will again have a large
contingent of brothers and, rushees present at
Market Square Arena as the lndiana Pacers host the
Boston Celtics. The Pacer organization is apparently
glad to see our return, for they are enabling the
chapter to purchase(Ioor level seats for the price of
general admission. During our last trip we managed
to attract some attention and generate enough
enthusiasm that both lndianapolis newspapers
mentioned the chapter prominently in their reports
on the game. we are sure we will be noticed again
th is year.
That is where the Rho Phi rush situation

"lf our rush efforts continue the way they have been
goihg, we can expect to take a fine pledge class."

The brothers here have been especially busy this
fall. Despite some changes in the rush system this
year, hard work and enthusiasm have resulted in a
very successful rush season so far. public Relations,
Graduate Relatioos, and Social committees have
also been extremely active. ln short, "boredom" has
not been a common word here at Rho phi.
Graduate involvement has also reached a high
point ttris fall. Both the House Corporation and the
BcA have met twice already, and many graduates
have stopped by on other occasions. ininxs to a
strong graduate effort, the new computer has arrived
\
and has been put to use.
Many of yo,u have had the chance to see it in
operation, os a record number of graduates were in
attendance for Homecoming this year. As always,
everyone enjoyed the weekend tremendously. we
can hardly wait to see as many of you as possible at
Retreat on January 141 Until that time, stay in touch,
and drop by if you are ever in the area.
Always proud to be a FlJl,
PRESIDENT'S
LETTER
Dear Br:others and Friends:.
As another school year begins, we here at Rho
'look forward
Phi
to it wiin nopelnd enthusiasm after
a busy, but successf ul summer.
ln August, eight Rho Phi brothers traveled to
Columbus, Ohio for the 18th FlJl Academy at Ohio
State University. Once again, Rho Phi was honored
as one of Phi Gamma Delta's outstanding chapters,
receiving honorable mentions in the areas of
scholarship, Ghapter publications, and campus
involvement. ln addition, Rose-Hulman FlJls were
awarded fourth place in the Cheney Cup competition
for all-around chapter efficiency. More importantly,
our delegates brought some valuable information
back home with us, which will make a strong chapter
even stronger.
TREASURER'S REPORT
Rho Phi has started the year with quite a bang.
Brothers are doing everythi,ng possible to reduce the
undergraduate debt to the smallest this, chapter has
seen for some time. This detinitely lightens
a
Treasurer's burdens.
Another cure for headaches has been Dr. Guthrie
(Hanover '50), our House Corporation Treasurer. He
and I have been working closely catching up on back
taxes, ond unless our friend the IRS finds something
else, we are caught up. Dr. Guthrie definitely
deserves a round of clicks from this chapter for his
ef forts.
Also instrumental in helping me this fall
have
been Don Mighell (Texas '56), Mike Cherbak (ME'Tll,
and Steve Farquar (ME '76).These men are devoting
ttleir time to help bring our books up to date.
Finally, I am also receiving great help from right
here in the chapter. Bob Luking (EE '84) and Dave
Zabel (EE '86) are doing a wonderful job as my
assistant treasurers. Bob is helping me with current
boqkwork, and Dave is collecting all of the bills.
Thanks to both of you.
Proud to be a Rho Phi FlJl,
Fraternally,

team to graduation, the Rose Fijis worked hard to
field a major and a minor football team. Currenily,
both teams have only a lone victory, but spirit, sportsmanship, and freshman rushing are ever present at
the lM fields. Brother Rob Wilson (ME '83) had a
problem using his nose to block a Lambda Chi Alpha
defender.
\r\nln varsity athletics, brother Rich Leonard (CH '85)
and Bill Bandy (CH '86) are contributing greatli, to a
successful rebuilding year for the Rose-Hulman
cross-country team. You should see purple watching
the '83-'84 RoqB basketball team.. Bgothers Keith
Kemp (CH '84), Scott Williams (ME '84), Brad Kiess
(ME '86), and Jeff "Wheels" Wheeler (ME '86) bring
many years of experience back to a season that
includes a Christmas break trip to Europe.
APARTMENT LIVING
A new school year is under way. Along with this
are a new set of out-of -house FIJ I apartments.
Reg
rettably, two
of last year's Ph i

have been made to the prestigious list 6t FlJl resi-

dences.
The dwelling of nearly a third of the 1983 class,
the Owl's Nest, is no longer in the hands of Phi
Gamms. One of the oldest apartments, Delta East, is
also void of FlJl men. Both of these legendary places
will be missed but their replacements are ready and
willing to take up the slack.
Three FlJl branches from last year are stronger
than ever. MeKee Manor, d house of "elegant living,"
is located at 1625 South sth. Senior EE's who lived
there last year are brother Mike MeKee, Ron Bender,
and Steve Proffitt. New occupants, also seniors, are
brothers Greg lnderhees and Rob Haynes.
Mobile East, located in Terre Haute's outer
limits (7415 Wabash Ave., Lot 54), is still the home of
brothers Scott Williams, Cliff Carnes, Tom Tillery,
and Keither Kemp. lt is definitely "not just any
trailer."
Last year's home of Dave Barnes, Tom Redford,
and John Hostettler has been inherited by two junior
brothers, Rich Leonard and Luis Brogran. The house
at 1405 S. Center is a "decent" place to live.
One of the two new FlJl branches is Skid Rho.
This is the haunt of iunior brothers Erich Teske, dgn
Davis, and Brian Thonn. This .luxurious apartment
can be found at 2420 Wabash Ave.
The other new FIJI stamping ground is located at
1003 S. 17th. The White House adds a stately flair to
the list of Phi Gamm extensions. The noble dwellers
of the White House are brothers Danny White and
Jim Luckiewicz.

HISTORIAN'S REPORT
Rho Phi's membership presently stands at fiftythree Brothers and two pledge Brothers.
The afternoon initiation of David \N. Zabel on
October 9, 1983 was an emotionally moving finish to
this year's Homecoming festivities. Dave is
a
sophomore electrical engineering student from
Lanesville, lN. Dave is a varsity tennis player, and
serves the f ratern ity as an assistant treasurer.
Con gratulations, Dave !
Rose-Hulman's newest
FlJl is James R.
Bielefeld, Jr. from Merrillville, lN. Formally pledged
on October 28,1983, Jim is a sophomore mechanical
engineering student active in intramurals. Welcome,
Jim
!
On October 24, 1983, Doug Koeneman was
installed to serve the remainder of the term as
chapter corresponding secretary. Doug is a junior
mechanical engineering major from Elizabethtown,
KY. Congratulations, Doug
!
The beginning of every second quarter signals
taking a new pledge class and the feeling of
excitement associated with have new blood in the
chapter. Unfortunately, the beginning of this second
quarter also signals the fact that we've said farewell
to our November graduates: Dave Letteri (ME '83),
Rob Wilson (ME '83), and Pete Watson (ME '83). We'll
miss you. Congratulations and best wishes.
Proud to be a FlJl,
Jonathan T. Richardson (CH '84)

HOUSE IMPROVEMENTS CONTINUE
The House and Grounds committee has been
busy this fall starting some major improvements and
maintaining the general condition of the House. The
rebuilding of the wood fence and the painting of the
foyer celing took the most time at the fall work
session. The work session also included the usual
painting, wall washing, window cleaning, bathroom
plumbing, and the infamous kitchen crew. Some of
the work was done with equipment purchased by the
House Corporation this year. The new equipment
includes a vacuum cleaner, lawn mower, desk
chairs, and dining room tables and chairs.
Planned for the immediate future is the strengthen-
ing of supports and replacing of the dining room
floor, and the refinishing of the living room floor.
Another f uture proiect is new cabinets for the
kitchen. All of these proiects are under the watchf ul
eyes of Sean O'Shaughnessey (ME '85) and his assistant Doug Nunan (EE'86).
