Congratulations to STEVE and CHERYL DEBEVOISE who announced the b i r t h

\r\nPLEDGE
EDUCATION
This quarter's five new pledges are: Jaime A r r i e t a , majoring in e n g i neering; Peter Cadra, engineering; John D i e t r i c h , chemistry; John
Friedman, forestry; and Murphy Rector, forestry. The c a l i b e r of these
pledges is very h i g h . Under the leadership of t h e i r president, Jaime,
they have cracked down to complete t h e i r pledge education before the
end of the quarter. I feel that their scholarship and enthusiasm w i l l
make them great brothers.

ROCK
'N'
ROLL
The following a r t i c l e was written by pledge Peter Cadra and appeared
as a letter to the editor in the Col legi ate Times. Many graduates are
sure to share his sentiments.
I would l i k e to respond to the letter supporting WUVT's progressive
mus i c format.
F i r s t I must q u a l i f y the fact that I support the station's r i g h t
to air the so-called "new wave" m u s i c , although I rarely l i s t e n to
such m u s i c (but enough to form my own o p i n i o n ) .
The m a i n problem concerning t h i s matter is media hype/exposure.
P u b l i c a t i o n s such as R o l 1 i ng Stone, A q u a r i an, and even the New York
Times present new wave as the music that "everyone" listens to.
It is t h i s g e n e r a l i z a t i o n that alarms me. I was introduced to rock
through "album oriented" stations in the P h i l a d e l p h i a / N e w York C i t y
area. I heard such c l a s s i c a r t i s t s as the J i m i H e n d r i x Experience,
Cream, Led Z e p p e l i n and The Who.
The immense t a l e n t of these groups can never be compared to any
new wave band. Thus Ifee1 that new wave Is wrongly r e c e i v i n g popul a r i t y and I refuse to recognize it as entertainment. I rather
v i e w i t a s n necessary e v i l .
Opponents to my reasoning may s t a t e that I l i v e in the past. But
why leave U t o p i a for the B l a c k Hole of C a l c u t t a ?
\r\nCHAPTER
NEWS
Winter quarter began w i t h fifteen active undergraduates, two Co-ops,
one graduate student, and two pledges. Michael Barringer and
Dominique Kostelac were i n i t i a t e d early in January. Congratulations
to the new brothers!
Rush was again our number one p r i o r i t y . Rush chairman Doug Frushour
ran a well organized rushing campaign that resulted in five pledges
and several more prospects for this spring. We were also priveledged
to have the help of F i e l d Secretary Eugene "Buddy" Cot£ who v i s i t e d
us early in January.
Collections for undergraduate accounts receivable were quite poor
for the b e g i n n i n g of the quarter. Consequently, the accounts payable
were barely paid off on time. However, positive action is being taken
to reduce the accounts receivable and thus a l l e v i a t e the cash-flow
problem.
There are a few graduate brothers who s t i l l owe money on their
undergraduate accounts. B i l l East and Erich Weinberg both owe over
$400, Brian C o l l i n s owes $95, and Psobert Phelps owes $215. The treasurer asks that they get in touch w i t h him to let him know their
situation and to make arrangements for payments.
Thanks to all of the brothers who have sent their Pig Tinner pledges.
The balance of the pledges have been coming in s t e a d i l y .
A few fundraising projects were undertaken this quarter. Due to the
late start on some of them, we w i l l extend them into spring quarter
where we expect to reap greater rewards. The projects include: Moving
furniture, car washes, snow shoveling, and s e l l i n g discount f i l m
certificates. The p i n b a l l machine is also helpful.
Several house improvements have been made. A study room was added
on to the basement bedroom. The furnace was enclosed in a storeroom.
The basement's t i l e c e i l i n g was replaced w i t h gypsum board as a pledge
project. The upstairs banisters were also repaired. Special thanks
go to House chairman M i k e Rooney for the t i m e , effort, and money he
spent on these projects. Thanks to everyone who helped out.
The chapter By-laws are being compiled and updated so that they may
be more accessible. Also, at a considerable but necessary expense,
the r i t u a l material was cleaned.
Congratulations to Doug Frushour who was appointed as the I.F.C.
Graduate Relations chairman.
The chapter extends a warm welcome to our four new L i t t l e Sisters:
P a t t i Walker, V i r g i n i a Tech; Sherry Long, Radford U n i v e r s i t y ; Sherry
Meyers, Radford U n i v e r s i t y ; and Ace 1 a Bidoya, V i r g i n i a Tech.
O v e r a l l , the chapter i s r u n n i n g w e l l and s p i r i t s are h i g h . A l l of
us are looking forward to a great s p r i n g quarter, w h i c h w i l l be h i g h l i g h t e d by our e l e v e n t h annual M o r r i s D i n n e r .
