QUARTER ACTIVITIES:
Theta Tau started off Fall quarter
1983 with as much if not more,
enthusiasm as before. Social activities
ranged from a New School Year's Eve
party to kick off the quarter to a party
with John Frank and his family on their
farm in Franklin after Tech's victory
over MTSU. Work started on the
fraternity house the week of the 12thin
expectation of a large, profitable rush.
When rush week was over, the
fraternity had picked up 12 new guys.
Also, 4 spring quarter pledges were
initiated into the fraternity.
Tech's homecoming this year was
truly dominated by Phi Gams. In the
first annual Dinner Theatre, Phi Gam
and ZTA placed first with a skit from
Grease. This year was a return to the
past when Fiji's and KD’s built a
homecoming float and captured
second place. In a pep rally/spirit
contest, the fraternity captured third
place. Phi Gam was truly alive on
campus that week.
Parents day was a huge success this
year with the fraternity feeding over
100 brothers, family and friends.
Everyone enjoyed making new friends
and as well as seeing old ones on a
beautiful Fall day.
Again this year Phi Gam was in
action on the intramural football field
capturing third place in the Purple
division and tied for fifth in the overall
fraternity competition. This years
gridiron clash led to the Phi Gam's
romping over the TKE’s (12-0) for the
first time in our fraternity's history.
The Theta Tau Chapter closed outits
fall quarter with many fine
accomplishments under its belt.
However, the brothers have started out
winter quarter to make it even better.
After a successful rush the brothers of
Theta Tau have settled down to
improve the fraternity scholarship, and
make the quarter as exciting as it can
be.

SPOTLIGHT:
PERKY
IN “ACTION”
Brother Perky Plumlee (’83) is
presently in British Columbia with the
Athletes in Action basketball team. His
fund raising efforts were successful
and he is now ready for a very
productive and worth-while year of
ministry.
Following a four day journey driving
out to British Columbia, he began
learning plays for the team and getting
into shape. He is adjusting rather well
aside from the fact he received a
sprained ankle, twisted knee, and a
black eye in practices.
The team is also busy with Bible
studies, prayer meetings, and
speaking engagements. Team
members are often asked to speak to
various groups in the community and
Perky has shared his testimony on two
occasions. The first time he spoke was
at an alcoholic rehabilitation center for
men, called “Miracle Valley.” He also
spoke to a group of third and fourth
grade children at a church in
Nooksack, Washington.
“My being a 6’8” Christian basketball
player probably meant more to them
than anything that | said, but | did have
Perky Plumlee'83, (the REAL tall one
in the middle) turris his athletic ability
toward golf during the annual Pig
a lot o tun sharing with the kids,” said
Perky.
Perky’s season began officially on
Oct. 22, with a game against the
Japanese Olympic team. Their next
game was against their greatest rival
and four-time National Canadian
Champions, University of Victoria.
Brother Perky Plumlee's address is:
Perky Plumlee, c/o Athletes in Action,
P.O. Box 529, Sumas, Washington,
98295.

\r\nHouse Corporation
Kicks-off $8400 goal
for Houses purchases
It's 84 in 84! That is the theme for the
house fund campaign, $8400 by 1984.
It has been talked about, planned for,
and dreamed of—but now itis here, the
countdown toward the purchase of the
present Chapter house and property.
At it’s meeting of Sept. 17, 1983 the
Theta Tau House Corporation Board
of Directors, along with the
Undergraduate Chapter Cabinet,
voted to begin a fundraising drive
toward such purchase. A goal of $8400
was set, with the drive to end on Sept.
1, 1984. The $8400 will include the
down payment as well as money for
immediately necessary repairs. Any
money left over, or in excess, of the
$8400, will go toward a major house or
yard improvement project.
The Chapter agreed to aid in raising
the money and has set a $3000 goal as
its portion of the total. (That leaves
$5400 for us, Grads!)
The first step toward house
purchase has not come without a great
deal of time spent exploring options
and weighing all considerations.
Particularly, President Jack
Southerland ('81) has extensively
explored all financial and legal
aspects. Presently, both the property
at 421 N. Walnut and the property and
small house (duplex) immediately to
the north of 421 are included in the
purchase plans. For the immediate
future the duplex would be rented first
to Brothers, then to others, with a
direct landlord—tenant relationship.
(In other words, the Chapter would not
be involved with these agreements.)
In other areas, the Corporation and
Chapter recently purchased a
Commodore 64 computer, along witha
printer. The immediate primary uses of
the computer will be for membership
records and bookkeeping. This
addition makes Theta Tau Chapter the
first fraternity at Tech, and one of the
first nationally, to have its own
computer.
For those who still have not heard,
the 1983-84 Board of Directors is:
President-Jack Southerland ('81);
Vice-President-Lee Wray ('81);
Secretary-Russ Bradley ('81);
Treasurer-Al Enochs (UT ‘76):
Assistant Treasurer-Dan Crunk ('80).
All Graduate Brothers are invited to
become a member of the Corporation.
To join, send $10 for annual dues to
one of the Board members. Also, let
someone know if you are interested in
being on the Board of Directors.
Elections are held yearly at Pig Dinner.
Directorships are for three years
(through officer elections are held
each year). One position comes up for
election next year (84) and there has
been discussion of increasing the
Board to seven members, which would
mean three openings.
Board of Chapter Advisers
Revitilized at Pig Dinner
The Theta Tau Board of Chapter
Advisers (BCA) was reorganized at Pig
Dinner under the direction of Randy
Wilmore ('82) and Section Chief Lee
Moss (UT '73). Brother Wilmore was
elected to serve as Chairman for 1983-
84.
At its meeting on Sept. 17, the BCA
met with the Chapter Cabinet,
discussing and evaluating chapter
strengths and weaknesses in the areas
of administration, organization, and
morale. Indeed, it was the Cabinet
which best grasped the Chapter's
problems and potential; and, no doubt,
this is the reason that Fall ‘83 has
proved to be the most effective ever for
Theta Tau, in its short 4% year history.
In its own administrative areas, the
BCA decided to meet four times a year
with the following schedule (quarterly
meeting marked by’):
JAN/FEB.—Maintain communica-
tion with respective committees to
keep up with activities and problems;
meet at least once with entire
committee.
*END OF WINTER QUARTER—
Meeting with BCA only to report on
Chapter and committee progress; oral
report should be given to the Chapter.
APR/MAY—Maintain communica-
tion with respective committees to
keep up with activities and problems;
meet at least once with entire
committee.
PIG DINNER—Yearly report to
Chapter; announcement of new
appointments; election of new
chairman.
*END OF SPRING QUARTER—
Meeting with BCA only to report on
Chapter and committee progress
(possibly held at Pig Dinner).
JUNE/JULY/AUG.—Maintain com-
munication with respective
committees concerning plans for fall.
*BEGINNING OF SEPT.— Work-
shop with Cabinet and Chairman;
finalize plans for fall.
OCT/NOV.— Maintain communica-
tion with respective committees to
keep up with activities and problems;
meet at least once with entire
committee.
END OF FALL QUARTER—Oral
report to the Chapter.
*DEC.—Workshop with newly
elected Cabinet and newly appointed
Chairman.
The workshop with the new Cabinet
and Chairman was held Dec. 3, at the
Chapter house. Goals and plans for the
coming year were set. Also, Graduates
and Undergraduates concentrated on
making the committee system more
efficient and effective and on giving
each Brother specific reponsibilities.

Without Mom
Home Away From Home
Brothers living together can relate
to a lack of privacy, cold showers, and
high electric bills, but they also gaina
stronger sense of unity and
brotherhood. On many campuses,
“fraternity living’ means sixty guys
sharing one house. Even though such
an arrangement does not exist at the
Theta Tau Chapter, there are very few
brothers who do not share living
arrangements with other brothers.
Most all graduate brothers can not
forget their experiences at the Men's
Room, BFH, or Depot. Who can forget
the spring blow outs at the Men's
Room, the traditional Homecoming
party and St. Patrick's Day party at the
BFH, and in its hey-day with Andy
Sowell ('82) and Jerry Burns ('83), the
keg parties at the Depot. and especially
the mornings after.
Even though the only thing left of the
BFH and Men's Room are memories,
the Depot still lives on. Carrying it on
are Dan Christian (84), Buddy Bacon
(86), and Mitch Simpson ('86). With
the start of the school year, a new
home was formed by Fiji brothers. The
Polo Club consists of Danny Dotson
(86), Mark Holbrook (86), Kirk
McLemon: (86), and Scott Neal ('86)
Their Main event so far was a going
away party for Phil Whitehead ('85)
who left for Co-op.
These living arrangements at Tech
are unique in that they allow brothers
to get to know one another more on an
individual basis. In the future, the
Theta Tau Chapter will grow and more
brothers will be living under one roof,
but for now we like it the way it is.
SEEN AT THE HOUSE
Matt Graves ‘83 was a_ pleasant
addition to the Chapters George
Washington birthday party.
Jack Southerland '81, Carl Martin '83,
and Eddie Johnson ‘83, surprised
everyone by crashing the pajama
party.
Robbie Simpson '83, Ken Sapp 82, and
Ken Adcox '85, jetted in for Rush.
Parent's Day: Graduate Robbie Simp-
son ‘82 (far right) enjoys Parent's Day
activities in September with his family.
Robbie is presently working in Dallas
for Texas Instruments.

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Brothers:
The Theta Tau Chapter kicks off
another year as we resolve to do even
more in 1984.
More new brothers were added to
the ranks as eleven were initiated. Kirk
McLemore ('85), Rush Chairman, has
set the goal for at least seven new
pledges to be picked up in Winter
Rush.
Speaking of more, All-Sing practice
is well under way as we look forward to
bringing home our fifth consecutive
first place trophy. While some of us are
warming up our voices, others are in
the gym ripping the nets in hope of
capturing our second straight
fraternity basketball championship.
With the leadership of Mark Manasco
('85) and Mark Gfiffith (86), we
anticipate super results in both events.
Winter quarter spawns winter retreat
where the Chapter's policies and goals
are reviewed, discussed, and amended
for the upcoming year. The agenda is
loaded with several heavyweights,
including the raising of dues,
improving graduate relations, creating
a chapter employment placement
office, coordinating the use of our
newly purchase Commodore 64
computer, and the upgrading of our
current public relations committee. On
the ligher side of the weekend, we plan
to have a two on two basketball
tournament, all night poker game, and
a whole lot of good eating. A special
thank you goes to Buddy Bacon (’86)
for all his hard work in planning this
year's retreat.
The chapter has already been
honored with the welcome return of
EDITOR’S NOTE
Grads, sorry for the delay of this
year’s publication. We have decided to
send two six page newsletters instead
of three four page newsletters. By
doing this we hope to make a more
interesting publication and not spend
any extra money.
Fiji Forever,
Kerwin Fulton (85)
many graduate brothers this quarter.
Matt Graves ('82) made a surprise
landing on the chapter house to turna
party into a celebration. Jack “Slim”
Southerland ('81) dropped in for the
MTSU game to share in some good ole
Fiji fellowship. Lee Workman ('82) flew
in from Miami, FL. to spend several
days and to announce his engagement
to our Sweetheart Jan Skillen. The
wedding has been set for April 28. They
plan to pay for the honeymoon with all
the bets they collect! We are very
pleased to have Lee Wray ('81) back in
town. Lee has taken a staff position
with the university and is working ona
Masters Degree in Student
Counseling.
Historically, Theta Tau is a chapter
on the move, accomplishing and
surpassing any goal or obstacle in its
path; this year is no exception. With
much hard work and dedication, we
pledge to be the best we can be!
Fraternally,
Jay Clark
“OUT WEST WITH PHI GAMS”
This summer, several Theta Tau
brothers were fortunate to be able to
meet other Phi Gams and stay with
them at Fiji houses west of the
Mississippi River.
Todd Arrants visited the Phi Alpha
Chapter at the University of Arkansas;
and Graduate brother Ken Adcox, and
Kerwin Fulton, Martin Hunt and David
Olive visited brothers of Sigma Chi
Chapter at USC, Los Angeles, Calif.
After talking with all five travelers,
one basic theme was evident — that of
the common bond of brotherhood.
Fijis, Football, and Fall: Tim Smith
84, political science major from
Cookeville, was a major asset for the
Phi Gam football team. Tim hopes to
attend law school in the fall.
